yes, though it was unironically hampered by the hucards, which had pathetically small rom sizes

once super famicom ate pce sales for lunch, the CD became the primary format, which after a few years became overloaded with weeb shit

if you love Hudson, Namco, Falcom, Irem, Compile, Taito games, this is a system for you

It feels less like a 16-bit competitor to the Super Famicom and Megadrive, but instead like a very powerful 8-bit system and competitor to the NES. The game design is more of the 80s than the 90s, even with games that were released in the 90s. And I love it for it.

PC ENGINEs good years were 1987-1991. Some developers decided to give the PC ENGINE a go because they were just sick of the FAMICOM hardware being a toaster in particular for arcade ports, but once the Super FAMICOM launches all of this is superseded and there's a good reason why it was all about SuperSystem Card and CDs at this point. One could say though that NEC&Hudson kind of squandered this a bit by not targeting more 3rd party developers aggressively .

PC Engine did well in Japan and was a good bridge between the Famicom and the Super Famicom. For whatever reason, Sega's consoles did not do very well in Japan until the Saturn and I suspect the Saturn did well in part because it was the first 32-bit console and on the success of the Mega Drive in practically every place *but* Japan.

But in the U.S., the Genesis destroyed the Turbografx-16. Part of that was the utter ineptitude of the marketing for the Turbografx-16 but part of it was also the vastly superior hardware of the Genesis. The only thing the Turbografx-16 had on the Genesis was the ability to display more colors simultaneously.

The PC Engine was released in October 1987 while the Mega Drive was released in October 1988. It should be pretty clear that the PC Engine's primary target when it was released was the Famicom as I'm assuming no one took the Sega Mk III seriously. Perhaps after the Mega Drive was released, NEC viewed the Mega Drive as a major threat to NEC being able to grab market share of customers wanting something more advanced than the Famicom.
