Of course people are going to selling them if they've gone through the trouble of putting it on cl. If you want a free one, you have to drive around and hope you spot one on the curb or if you know someone that's had one in storage for years and doesn't give a shit about it.

now CRTs either belong to a dwindling number of extremely old people who hate change, hoarders, or people who keep them around for a reason. It's increasingly unlikely you'll get a great deal on one.

As a former autistic CRT collector I can assure you CRTs are a meme. Just score yourself a nice consumer set with S-Video and you're golden. I've been selling off my collection I had already sold several when this picture was taken but now I only have the Wega, and the 19", 14", and 5" trinitrons.

>> No.6184942

Higher prices breed higher prices. I have a Sony KV something or other CRT that has been in my bedroom since the early 2000s. I very rarely use it since I have another CRT that I use for old games, but at this point why would I give it away? If I did, there's probably a 95% chance that someone would take it from me and instead of using it for themselves, they'd immediately try to flip it for $50 or whatever.

It has been some years ago, but I remember there was some amusement center that was getting rid of a game for free (pickup), and some guy went there, pulled it over to his truck (I guess he at least did that), and was trying to sell it from the place's parking lot. Do I really think my old TV is worth much of anything? No, but why would I enable somebody like that who would just try and profit off of it?

4 years before that, I found a jvc 27" with component at the side of the curb by my college. The image started going on it last year so that's how I got the samsung I have now.

Almost 10 years ago I got a small crt for free from a house that I was working on renovating during my summer job. The owners just gave it to me. It was a lesser brand but I was happy to finally have tv and setup in my room.

I've never paid for a tube tv and never will. I can't believe people actually pay money for consumer grade tvs. Just keep an eye out when you're out or driving, you will find one - especially during summer.

They don't even know what they're talking about because once something is left on the street (curb) it's open season (legal) for anyone to take it. However if something is in a dumpster, technically the city owns it, making it illegal to plunder. Kind of weird I guess.

Good PC CRT monitors are getting a little hard to find. But that's partially because there weren't as many to begin with. I have a feeling boomers were more willing to shell out $3000 on a good TV set that they could show off to their friends vs. blowing $1000 on a professional graphics monitor. Especially when all they were using it for was to type out emails on the joint ISP account they shared with their spouse. Because why buy that Trinitron when "this TTX monitor is also 17 inches and costs $200 less". As a result, there is still a pretty good selection of nice CRT televisions. Monitors are fucking tricky.

>>6189851
I kind of don't get the PVM meme either. The whole point of owning a CRT is to play the games as you remember them, and not all fucked up on an LCD. A monitor meant for professional video editors just seems like autistic overkill when you can get pretty good consumer sets for free. I'm perfectly happy with my 28" mid-90s mid-range consumer Trinitron. One of my friends just blew $300 on a Sony PVM-1954Q (and that was a """GOOD""" price), and sure it's noticeably better, but not really enough to justify the hassle. Or the uncertainty of dumping that kind of money into retro tech that may or may not have been treated well.

>> No.6191886

>Good PC CRT monitors are getting a little hard to find
Because unlike TVs that get used for only a few hours a day PC monitors are used for 6+ hours a day until they die. Also the very nature of computer graphics means much higher chance of burn in.

All valid reasons, and perfectly plausible. But impossible to say for sure. Based on my experience, I saw a lot of well-to-do people who either didn't know any better or just didn't give a shit when it came to PC monitors. They bought something from Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City or ordered from Dell, and just got whatever came in the box. Also, another thought, big CRT TVs are hard to move. I suspect people are more willing to let one sit in a corner for years, versus a PC monitor that takes up space on your desk and is easier to get rid of. Either way, I'm sure a lot of great units with no burn-in have been trashed. Also

>TV
>get used for only a few hours

Have you ever met anyone over the age of 55? They keep those things on almost 24/7 in some cases. Entire weekends are spent on them. Their kids may have frittered away hours in front of a PC CRT, but boomers watched a ton of cable TV.
