I'll start this thread off with Forest of Illusions Super Mario World. I just found it repetitive and not as creative as the devs probably thought it was.

What the fuck are you talking about? Its the most creative area of SMW, with lots of scenery and enemies exclusive to the area, not to mention the level variety.

Fair enough I guess, but the levels they do give you aren't that interesting, and the fact that you have to do them more than once sometimes just feels like a chore.

One of my oldest, fondest gaming memories comes from this part of Mario World so I can never hate it. For me, it's the boss rush before Wily in the Mega Man games. I already beat these assholes, doing it a second time is boring.

I don't know why, but I actually like boss rushes, it's a good reminder of what you did so far and helps you brush back up on movesets.

I don’t like the boss rush in MM1 since you have to do four of them on one life bar. Found it weird that Elec Man and Cut Man rematches are in their own stage, too

Great Glacier from FFVII. Overly convulted, long, and annoying with it being timed and having to go back to where you pass out at from all the way at the end of the section. It was the only part of FFVII where I wasnt having fun.

Repetitive in what way? The levels are all unique, or you mean because you got lost and have to re-enter levels to find the right exit?

Sure the levels are all unique, but it's not like I want to go back to them, which I'm sure several kids also had this problem. The levels aren't that challenging, so it feels kind of cheap to add that element, but hey that's just me.

When I was a kid I think the first time I played SMW I was at the home of some adult family friend and they were here. So in my child head this was the beginning of the game. I could not for the life of me figure out how to progress and the realization that the adult who owned the game couldn't find a way out of the forest either made me feel absolutely hopeless. I just gave up and stared at the overworld for a while and then went home. Now that I've beaten the game like 50 times I feel like I was a really stupid, defeatist child.

when I was a kid I used to have trouble getting to the end of forest of illusion 3 as big Mario (since you need to do a spinjump to get the key).
>>6177979
It's normal to get lost in the forest of illusion, it's the whole point of that world.

As a kid you probably just didn't know that Mario could go down pipes, or the "try everything to uncover every possible place there may be a secret" Zelda logic. Super Mario World is intended for people that are either familiar with the mechanics of 1 and 3 or read the instruction manual. These are the only two ways to know about how Mario can go down pipes by holding down, which is the only way to find the exit in the level that lets you clear Forest of Illusion. If it were made now there would be a text box over every pipe that would say, "Try pressing down when you are on the pipe! You might just be able to go down it!" But it was always assumed players had read the manual with all games from back then.

the whole snow area section i could really take or leave, it's kind of a snooze. I always forget it even exists when I replay the game. overall I find it mercifully short though so I can't ding it that much

i think it's supposed to teach steadfast players about secret exits by outright forcing them to find them to progress

it's fine for experienced players as long as you remember what to do

It's a chore when you play through game multiple times. You don't need a brush up.

Splatterhouse 2. I was never good at it, I had to cheat to beat it. But it had the best soundtrack of any game I've played on the Genesis.
