WHat characterizes superb taste in retro games?

Someone who judges everything according to the modern standard? Or according to the highest quality equivalents released before and since?

Someone who judges everything according to their time of release? Staying fair to the standards of its own era?

Someone who adopts a middle ground and treats the entire retro age as one, with all games released within that span sizable against themselves?

Someone with a narrow palate or a diverse one?

Someone who penalizes flaws, tolerates them, or embraces them?

Someone who rates gameplay above all else, or someone who treats a game in its totality?

Or does it even matter? Are questions of quality in gaming simply subjective and pointless?

Good and bad taste don't exist objectively.

Be considerate of the time the game was made but don't excuse flaws because of it. And pay respect to the games that defined or revolutionised mechanics and genres.
Jurassic park was one of if the first games to have a ragdoll physics engine, but I think it was half life that made it mandatory.
RE4 created the third person shooter even though it wasn't really the first, just the breakthrough one.
I don't think someone who hates a gameplay style or genre is a good critic. All games are derived from multiple genres to an extent

This. Someone who just enjoys what they enjoy and doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks, but who can articulate their thoughts and discuss things with an open mind.
