>Aesthetically fits better with a Model 1 Genesis, but requires more wire hookups for that
>High hardware failure rate due to the motorized tray

Is there any reason to owning a Sega CD model 1 besides novelty? I've never even seen one in person before, as a kid I thought the model 2 was the only version.

>> No.6161548

No. Model 2 has an extra thingy to support the model 1 MD with no problems and it's much more reliable.

>> No.6161551

I use an X'Eye. All Sega CDs have surface mount electrolytic capacitors but the model 1 has more of them. If you have one that the tray is hanging up on, it probably just needs the belt replaced.

>> No.6161564

No, but collectors want their consoles to look "aesthetic." Function comes second to form.
Not gonna deny it though, I'm a sucker for looks too. If model 1s weren't so much more expensive, I would've gotten one and just repaired it whenever needed.
Speaking of which, god damn the Sega CD got expensive quick.

What more reason do you need? If it's a question of reliability, the answer will always be Everdrives and emulation over anything with a 30+ year old disc drive. There is no mechanical justification for owning a CD2.

The part that's known to break on the motorized tray assembly is typically the belt, which shouldn't be difficult to swap, and not difficult to find one which fits or which can be made to fit.
The top tray is more robust though, no belt to break.

>Is there any reason
Of course. You can display it on your shelf under your Genesis, make youtube videos of it, wait for the price to go up so you can sell it on ebay, etc. There are no good games for the SCD so there's no reason to own any model if you just want to play games. Even if there were the tray problems would make it so troublesome it wouldn't be worth using. The wires aren't a problem. You do it once or you mod the console+SCD to do audio over the expansion port like the model 2.

Could probably get one cheaper and then just replace the optical drive with the up and coming ode that's coming down the road.
If you're a stickler for accuracy or hate the mega sd's incompatibility with the 32x then it would be easier to have a normal flashcart that can do 32x and normal genesis, and an ode modded gen 1 under your gen 1 genesis. That's my plan anyway.

Why wouldn't you use the headphone jack? The model 1 doesn't put out stereo audio from the AV port. You can plug an aux cable into the headphone jack on the Genesis and the other end into the mixing port on the back of the Sega CD, so you can get stereo audio out of the red and white jacks from the Sega CD and only use the video part of the Genesis' AV port. The model 1 does not have the capability to send stereo audio to the Sega CD through the expansion port, so this is the "workaround".

The expansion port audio out is mono on a model 1. You're getting mono Genesis audio mixed with the stereo CD audio that way. You're not laughing at a zoomer, you're desperately grasping for ways to feel superior over someone else by purposefully being retarded and not using the way Sega provided for you to get stereo Genesis audio mixed with the stereo CD audio. If you're unlucky enough to have a VA7 revision model 1, this is especially important as it has the worse audio chip that will degrade the CD's audio like a model 2, and using the mixing port uses the much better CD's mixing instead.

I actually bought it failing to read discs. I swapped in a laser out of one of my Saturns (literally the same laser) and not only did it start reading discs, when I put its laser into the Saturn the Saturn still read discs so I never even bought a part. To be honest, the last time I tried using the X'Eye, it reset every time it tried to spin up the disc but I think that's probably just a problem with its power supply. I rummaged in a thrift bin and got a power supply that was the precise voltage and amperage and I think it just has aged out of its rated amperage since then. This thread discusses it. If it had stereo out through the expansion port, the mixing cable wouldn't be necessary and Sega wouldn't have bothered spending the money to add them. The Model 2 Genesis does have stereo out through the expansion port, as evidenced by it not needing to use a headphone jack+mixing cable to get stereo through the AV jack or the Genesis' half of the audio through the RCA jacks on the Sega CD. You can get Sega CD audio through the AV jack on a model 1 without using the mixing cable or the CD's audio jacks, but it will be mono.

Yes, you can (most likely) use it without it. Some CD 32X games actually require both add-ons anyway. The V0 32x (stamped MK-84000 on the PCB visible through the cartridge port flaps, revisions tack an A on the end) has an incompatibility with certain model 2 Genesis consoles, and you need either this adapter or a Sega CD to make it work for unknown reasons.
