It's funny, even though they put the Saturn in Eva due to Sega, if you think about the world they're in, you could argue a Saturn would probably be a pretty common console for someone to own at the time. Where everything almost ended in 2000 and no more consoles were made during or after since they had other pressing matters to attend to.

Just like /vr/.

I remember getting a bit annoyed at this, since Tonegawa is meant to be set before Kaiji which would've been around 1995 or so. In this scene, one person is playing on a PS1 (as seen by the controller) but since Madhouse wanted to modernize it by putting it today, they didn't update the console and instead shows this guy playing PSO2 with a PS1 controller.

Not sure if it fully counts but I imagine OP wants random /vr/ vidya from anime.

Genshiken had a lot of vidya from time to time, from cosplays, consoles, actual discussions, gameplay and more. It was quite fun to watch for those things alone.

It was mostly a mix of 5th and 6th gen stuff since it came out around 2003. Their club room had a Dreamcast and PS1 hooked up that they used a lot, I think they also had a Saturn, Wondermega or a Neo Geo as well but I could never tell. They also played Puyo Puyo (although it was on PS2) and Guilty Gear a lot, but I think the games became more modern as time went on.

I remember reading teasers about it in Game Pro, along with little blurbs about other projects like SEGA Mars or SEGA VR (dunno if these were the same thing) that never released. So to suddenly hear it that it somehow came out the same year I was playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles, before PlayStation even, that... messes with the timeline of my gaming childhood in a pretty big way.

The typical narrative seems to be:
“SFamicom outsold the MegaDrive. So the Japs hate SEGA, the system sucks. SNES ftw!!!”

But if you really think about it, it’s more like “SEGA and NEC steal market share away from Nintendo’s onetime 100 percent control of the Japanese market”. People did indeed have the MegaDrive and enjoyed it.

No, don’t believe these sorry ass SEGA fanboys. If you ask the average Japanese person what SEGA is they’d have NO idea what you’re taking about. SEGA at its peak was just a handful of programmers in an apartment in Osaka. They hardly exist today, just a PO Box and a disconnected phone number.

The Saturn was successful there, but the MegaDrive was way more popular in the USA, and Europe (mostly UK), and Brazil. In the USA Genesis had 52% market share there.

In Japan SEGA is more known for their arcades and Hatsune Miku and the Yakuza games. Going software only multi platform was actually a really good outcome for SEGA in the end. Now their games can be enjoyed by more people and aren’t trapped on their hardware.

The reason why they promoted the Saturn in Evangelion is because Sega was the very first sponsor Evangelion got. The EVA designs were too weird and companies like Bandai weren't sure if they would sell. Sega was the first company that invested in releasing toys, the very first Eva action figures that existed. Companies like Bandai and Kaiyodo jumped ship later when Eva was proven a hit.
The very first Eva video game was also released exclusively on Saturn.

It was because the 2nd impact occurred in 2000 just before the PS2 was out, and since Japan didn't care about the Dreamcast that, the most popular console would've probably be the Saturn or PS1, so it wouldn't be wrong to assume Hikari (best girl) would have a Saturn in her house.

Obviously, it's because of the Sega endorsement in the anime, but I prefer my head canon more.
