I beat it on my first try. It was okay, I guess. The super secret level was a bit of a challenge though.

Yeah, once you get the patterns down, it's a good, fun game. Not as hard as people make it out to be.

Its a really good game, it was clearly intended for use with a turbo controller or to have turbo fire in the game. The graphics have a fairly clean style and the music is really good. The difficulty is similar to gradius. Great game as good as the usual top shooters on nes like salamander and gradius.

Nah it wasn't intended for a turbo controller, the intent was for you to actually keep powering up and not die like in Gradius style shooters, of course if you die every 10 seconds and get reduced to the basic shot then you will be underpowered that was the point. If you however play the game in one go with minimal deaths you'll be powered up for most of it and won't need to mash nearly as much

No way is this as good as Life Force/Salamander or Gradius 2. (Not sure about the first Gradius; I didn't play that one a lot.) It's just an okay, forgettable game... plus Follin.
