I can deal with the crosshair, and bMouse disables that wonderful engine feature where you can only aim on one axis at a time, but Redux does this strange thing where if I move my mouse slowly I won't turn at all and it makes aiming feel choppy. Changing sensitivity doesn't fix it and neither does toggling vsync.

Since it's made by kids as sort of edutaiment class, here's an idea: teach them about how cell animations work, and ask them to draw different parts of the monster on different sheets and then cut them out so they could practice simplest animation by hand, capture that then post it into the game for slightly more dynamic enemies.

Heh yeah, they were extremely happy when I came back.
Thankfully, II rarely have a whole class to contend with, I usually have 5 to 8 kids joining me every friday and some wednesdays, drawing for the game and pitching ideas. So far there's 21 kids involved in the project, but they are free to come and go, which is the better option for me, I probably couldnt handle a group of more than ten !
Thanks for the help offer. I could use some help finding libraries of audio files to give monsters death\attack\active sounds.
Other than that /vr/ has always been very useful anyway, whenever I ask a decorate or doombuilder question there's someone there to give me a hand !

WADs that are challenging in vanilla are just a fun romp with HND. And that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. But it is something I've noticed. Just load up Ancient Aliens and you'll see what I mean.

I've had a serious problem with the way Doom 2016 reinterprets what OG Doom was in a sort of kneejerk reaction to Doom 3, and this feels like an extension of it.

Wolf 3D had a live system that Doom 1 shed, which is why it's a part of what makes Doom, Doom. It's hard for me to even consider Doom 2016 part of the same series unless you think of it in terms of brutal doom and fan mods after the fact, more of a zeigeist of the idea of what doom was v.s. what it actually was.

I've posted a ton about this but they basically gutted anything that included making you feel like you were in that environment or anything that got in the way of the power fantasy. In Doom 1, 2 and even 64 had enemies as a thing to struggle against and progress through.
Enemies in Doom 2016 aren't just not scary anymore, they are never an obstacle, to the point where imps will jump out of your way in environments later on just to get out of your way.
You're not navigating claustrophobic environments anymore, you're running through massive serious sam style arenas.

It just doesn't feel like Doom anymore to me.
I wanna be John Mcclane from Die Hard 1, not the sequels.
Or Ash Williams from Evil Dead 1 & 2, not the TV series.

I agree. People are gonna take a revisionist look to Doom as a whole because they're dumb, but at the end of the day, Doomguy in 1 and 2 was still just a human, he was just pissed off and determined to fight the demons. I regret not saving that pic of Doomguy backed into a corner, wounded and with a glint in his eyes because that's a good example of what he is.

Though I think it also makes sense that he's more direct and efficient in the newer Doom games, the guy has gone through an eternity of fighting demons so at that point it's just business as usual for him.

I get that, it's just that they stripped away that human element.
You are really making me want a grizzled "been at this shit too long" doomguy covered in scars from years of fighting demons in hell, chainsmoking cigars, permanent bags under his eyes, starting to age slightly, always, always carrying his shotgun with him, always sitting in the corner by himself never speaking a word...
But despite all that, "he's the best" someone will say when they walk into the room and explain it to the newbie lieutenant. He's gone to the world in most regards, probably spends most of that time sitting by himself inside empty bases or hellscapes, his only companions the corpses he's left behind.
But regardless of all that, when he gets into combat, he's an impossible whirlwind of violence nobody can match, all from raw instincts at this point. He'll kill a cacodemon with a desert fork if he has to, just give him a weapon and he'll kill anything that comes through that portal. He doesn't even need to be taught how to use it, he'll find a way.

Running into that the first time was what turned me off from it way too long ago, but being able to do that shit right back to them is what got me into it. It was this old 2018 clip that did it.
Eventually I came to terms with the fact that if I can see and shoot them, they can do the same. I think that's generally why I'm okay with most hitscanners in general, I do the same shit all the time to them so it's only fair.

I'm with you on the rant. Lore was OK before but fucking keep it light, or if you can't do that relegate it somewhere out of gameplay. Now we've got Bethesda adding cutscenes and trying to create their own "universe" because everyone needs to mindlessly chase that gravy train since Marvel movies made bank.

They're still far more open than the tight + dark areas in I/II and it's only going to get more open with Eternal dumping mobility on you.
Even with a "small" arena if you've got some grand vista it's not very claustrophobic is it? Environmental atmosphere matters and while Nu Doom is fun to play they forgot it was more than slaughter WADS and "rip and tear" jokes.
