Going into 7th gen saw the rise of many practices and design/market philosophies despised and reviled for killing the industry today, but it wasn't until midway through that gaming no longer was made with gamers in mind. So that places it at the latest at 2009, thus most people will argue 2007 or 2008 as the last good enough year or first especially bad year. It didn't happen at any point during 6th gen, I can tell you that.

Yeah I think this is overlooked. The current scene isn't too bad when you consider how easy it is to play retro games now. Retro gaming has been mainstreamed to an extent, and as much as I want to REEEEEE about it, the more people getting into this hobby, the better.
