Why do you hate that, though? It makes perfect sense. Any good team always shares info; The active party members will obviously tell the inactive ones about the shit they did and the battles they fought while they were gone, and they gain secondhand experience from the knowledge. Not the same amount as if they had fought themselves, but that's why it's almost always partial experience.

If anything, it'd be stupider to not have them gain experience. All good squads train and teach each other.

In FFV for example, the best armor makes you undead so you can't heal by conventional means, so instead you cast the death spell on yourself, or a fire spell while wearing a flame ring/shield.

In many FFV solo challenges, whacking yourself is needed to beat certain bosses... most obvious example would be purely physical jobs against Omniscient (a boss that will reset the battle any time he's hit with a non-magical attack): equip a reflect ring, attack yourself with the mage masher (a weak knife that sometimes cast the spell silence spell) and have silence bounce to the boss.

Similarly, there are several instances in the series where it's useful to hit yourself, be it to cause big damage with the ??? spell, to put Tifa in near-death status so she can use the special properties of the powersoul, desperation attacks in FF6, etc...

No risk because there's really no way to game over when you use save files. And because of this developers are free to add dozens of hours of filler to games.

I understand character and stories are important but we don't need 40hours+ of backtracking and long-winded expositions, slow walk speeds, slow battle intros, slow victory screens, sloq cutscenes and slow everything, everything is slowed the fuck as if developers don't respect player time at all.

I'm playing FF6 now and I really don't think it has any of those problems. There's no backtracking, nothing is long-winded, your walk speed is quick once you get the sprint shoes (although they should have just made that default, or put a run button) the battle intros and outtros are snappy as fuck (if you mash A, you can get back to the field screen before the victory music even starts playing), and even cutscenes are short and to the point. The game never forces you to watch obnoxious backstory for characters you don't care about; in fact, there's tons of dialogue you'll probably never even read if you don't use certain characters, but none of it really affects the plot all that much, it's just there for the people who might actually care. World of Balance has great pacing and is constantly giving you short-term objectives to keep you motivated, as well as splitting up your party to give you reasons to use different characters. And World of Ruin is so non-linear and devoid of filler that people literally complain about it.

I agree that a lot of JRPGs suffer from the problems you mentioned, but you could have picked a better example than FFVI. Chrono Cross, for example, is a bit younger, but is guilty of almost everything you said, and definitely has zero respect for the players' time. Such a bloated disaster.

I just got to this point of FFVI, and honestly, you don't miss much if you open all of the early-game chests. Most of it is consumables, or by the time you can get it, is matched or outclassed by stuff you can win in the coliseum. The only really good thing is the ribbon near the Moogle cave, and even then, ribbons aren't even as helpful in FFVI as they are in other games, plus you can steal/morph infinite amounts in the late game if you're brave/lucky.

I don't need to be able to make dialogue choices that actually affect the game in order to self-insert, though. As long as the protagonist is silent, I have no problem, since I'm still literally controlling everything the character does. I'm not gonna throw a shitfit just because I can't choose to not save the princess.

When I was a kid, I used to alwayse use default names or think up funny ones, because let's face it, as a kid you don't want to be you, you want to be a grown-up super cool hero, but now that I'm an adult, I almost always use my real name when it's clear that the character is a blank slate.

I think you just have a really specific idea about what "self-insert" means. It doesn't mean "complete, meticulous character customization" or "complex, impactful dialogue trees", it just means "you pretend the main character is you, and your reactions take the place of his". That's it.

Funny you mention Zelda, though, because I really can't self-insert as Link, either. I think it's just because he's a very long-established character, and does have some noticeable, enduring traits, as well as an established origin with the whole reincarnation thing.

>> No.6151975

I hate this, but what I hate even more is job systems. Even since FFI on the NES, it's always just kind of a gamble. It seems like it should be about customization and variety, but instead it's about "guess which jobs are next to useless and which are nearly indespensible, good luck, faggot!". I always feel like I pick the wrong jobs, and it's even worse in newer JRPGs where they let you mix job classes and create new ones. This kind of shit gives me anxiety and makes me feel like I'm just wasting time with my party and I'm going to have to eventually go back and do a bunch of grinding to get everyone the "right" jobs.

In fact, I'm not really a fan of party customization at all in most RPGs. Nobody ever seems to get it right; it's either "50% of the options are useless" or "every character is a blank slate that just ends up broken and exactly the same anyway". FF games really became that way starting with 6, but it got really bad in 7 and 8. Especially 8, where literally every stat was just the product of however many spells you chose to junction to it. Absolutely retarded system.

Personally, I like it when an RPG hands you characters with pre-defined stats and roles. It, ironically, makes things feel more dynamic, and you don't have to worry whether or not you're fucking yourself over 30 hours in the future.

FF9 isn't really *that* bad unless you're going for all key items, which I never do. Other than that, you're basically fine as long as you just follow the general principle of buying equipment liberally, since the main way you can get fucked is by different shops becoming unavailable on Disc 4 (sometimes as early as Disc 3). You can also get many of these items just by stealing from bosses, at least one copy of them, that is.

But like, you really just have to make sure that every time you check in somewhere, there's no new equipment that teaches a new ability. If in doubt, buy an extra for synthesis later.

Probably the most BS one is that several items that teach unique skills and are otherwise useful are only available in Daguerreo—an optional area—if you visit on Disc 3, including the second and last chance to buy the Octagon Rod for Vivi, which teaches the 3rd-tier elemental magic! But most of these shops really only disappear at the very end of the game, like after you go to Terra. So by the time you've figured out you've missed something, you've experienced 95% of the game's content already anyway.

You don't have to do this, it's just your compulsory nature taking over.

Each character has its own cases. Tidus for agile monsters, Wakka for birds, Auron for armor, Lulu for elementals, Rikku for machines and utility/wild card scenarios, Yuna to square off with the apex monsters. Plus a maverick character in Kimahri who can "fake" most of these roles in scenarios where you think you need more than one of a certain role.

A battle will generally give you 3 of these "cases" and you match up your characters or summon an Aeon. The next battle maybe you use 3 others, and now they get experience. On bosses, give everyone a turn, sure.

I guarantee you level faster this way because you're not dragging out low-AP fights having Rikku and Yuna meleeing armored enemies.

Well, yeah. Yuna is the most disproportionately powerful party member in a JRPG (relative to the other characters in her own game). If you feed her your extra ability spheres and make sure to at the very least get her into every battle, you start breaking the game by the time you get to Operation Mi'ihen. Giving her even just one Aeon that scales with her stats is rather chunky, but the fact that you just keep getting more of them is ridiculous. And of course, the segment where you can't use Yuna is the hardest part in the game.

I always assumed that the other party members travel the same path as the main characters and fight similar monsters hence why they level up as well.

7th Saga, Mother, Terranigma. As far as I remember.
I don't remember Earthbound but probably the same as Mother

Fucking tales of Phantasia.
Last I remember, I had to defeat 4 different elementals/spirits, and I believe I got 3 out of 4 of them.

Is there any way to tell how many I have?

Not if you play for highscore or 1cc, then they become exciting and highly replayable.

When your party outnumbers the standard monster troop, it makes the player seem like a weakling who hides behind strength in numbers

Why waste a turn on a skill that will fail the majority of the time especially when every single turn is life and death. I would much more prefer

I hate RPGs that have class systems that require you to train a character in all classes. I don't think it's in any retro RPGs though.

I hate not being able to change the map/vanguard/leader character. If you're gonna give me a whole party let me choose who Im looking at for the huge percent of the time Im not in battle. Or at the very least let me do the train thing where everyone runs in a line.
