6143189 No.6143189 [Reply] [Original]

Are the mini consoles the best option if you want to retro but experience the original controllers or is a MiSTer with 8bitdo a better option?

I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck. Not interested in original hardware, but the Super NT is a compelling option, just very expensive.

Sorry forgot to add the Mega SG. I'm mostly interested 4th gen, but I think the analogue options are way out of my budget considering it will cost me over $500 for the consoles, flash carts, and controllers.

>> No.6143360

No, the only way to play these systems is with the original consoles and pads connected to a 20" BVM like the developers intended.

Then pick up a 360 controller, or whatever you can find for the loose change in your pocket, and emulate on the laptop that presumably already have.

>> No.6143409

I would just like to point out that adapters from retro inputs to usb are available. Mini consoles are a limited gimmick. If you like them, that's cool, but a small form factor PC can be connected to real controllers and run any emulator or ROM you want.

Games that require precise controls and good reflexes are awful on the mini's. I recently picked up a crt and got out my old nes out of storage and I was shocked how much better the games controlled. Shooters, platformers and fighting games really suffer on the minis and retropie. If you're really into it you will eventually just go back to playing original hardware. Get an everdrive and that gives you access to all the games on og hardware. I'm not a snob when it comes to how the games look on new tv's, yes they look worse, but its the laggy controls on the minis that kills the enjoyment for me.

If you do the analogue consoles, you can play roms from a SD card rather than buying flash carts and while you can spend money on 8bitdo controllers or whatever you can also plug in the original controllers which you might be about to track down for cheaper?

A Mister setup might be a better investment for the long term.

>> No.6144396

Analogue charges A LOT for shipping and you won't get a discount for buying more than one console. Hope you don't live outside the US, even more $$$ for shipping.

If you buy a mini, try to get the SNES because the pads are nice and work just fine for the other retro stuff you can emulate on it.

You can more or less emulate the same stuff on the Genesis and can get it for cheaper, but the controller is kinda shit for anything besides the Genesis games, only get it if you're more of a SEGA fag and really love that controller.

Whatever you do don't buy 8bit Do, it's overpriced chinese shit that barely works most of the time.

Mini consoles are the cheapest possible SoCs running shitty emulators optimized for speed instead of accuracy, with poor compatibility and generally little if at all in terms of software upgrades.
You're better off running the GOOD emulators like bsnes in a powerful workstation instead of these shitty super-overpriced gimmicks designed to extract money from boomers.
If you'd like hardware dedicated to the purpose, FPGA is the way to go, and miSTer its main representative.
Otherwise, get the real hardware and an OSSC.

If you really need a small form plug and play solution then build a mister. Once it's set up it's extremely nice to use but you'll need to fuck around a bunch to make it presentable.
Otherwise just emulate shit on your PC.

I'm 20 years old and I find these mini consoles fascinating. If I wanted to emulate other consoles, I'll just use my computer. Other than that I am hacking these mini consoles to play NES(on the NES mini), Genesis(on the Genesis mini), SNES(on the SNES mini) and PS1(on the PS1 mini) games.

If you could fit something like https://www.amazon.com/Fractal-Design-Mini-ITX-Computer-FD-CA-NODE-304-BL/dp/B009LHF4FO?th=1 you could spend less and build a significantly faster mini pc.

What's so fascinating about a shitty, underpowered commercial appliance designed to extract money from people who do not know any better.

Why not use, say, a raspberry pi 4. They're more powerful than shitty emu appliances.
I'd still go with a miSTer, because at least the approach is fundamentally different.
If I wanted to run emu software, I'd just use my pc, much better than these mini consoles. Raw power + running the version I want of the emu of my choice vs some shit that happens to run well on some lowcost mips trash thanks to dramaticallyinnacurate emulation.

The mini consoles are nice if you enjoy having the shell that looks just like the old consoles, but you can do better. I'd recommend building a raspberry pi and loading it up with emulators that run the games much more accurately.

Hell, you can even remove the hardware from one of those mini consoles and replace them with the components for a raspberry pi if you really wanted to. Also comes with the benefit of loading more roms onto it.

>> No.6145156

Get a decent wired usb controller and download some roms. Seriously. I have original hardware and its nice but just doesn't beat the convenience of having everything on my laptop.

I still play on original hardware but most of the time I just grab my laptop and get comfy on the couch.

There is some difference but imo its not enough to outweigh the conveniences of modern emulation and controls.

Its like paying an extra $25,000 dollars for a car just to go 5 mph faster.

I find mini consoles fascinating because I get to hack them, add whatever games I want on it and play them. I managed to get a nude version of Tomb Raider 2 running on my PS1 mini. I wouldn't waste my money on a Raspberry Pi or a MiSTer because if I wanted to emulate other consoles, I will just use my PC. Also I could sell these mini consoles in about 30 years when they go up in value, can't do that with a Raspberry Pi or a MiSTer.

If you want just ONE system because you're already a big fan, or want only a small smattering of games on your tv then get a mini.

If you want fidelity and have either money or the original systems you want already get flash carts.

If you want GAEMS on your tv get something like a shield pro and emulate, MISTer if you simply HAVE to use a crt.
