That said on almost every subsequent replay I just get to fight where you play as Ruffian Saki then stop because the segments after it are my least favorite. They really gave Airan all the shittiest stages in the game.

I always liked her topdownish bit with jumping over mines and such. Any part in this game that makes use of jumping like you're playing a sidescroller from behind really shows what can be done with the railshooter format while giving you nearly as much movement as any of Treasure's action platformers, S&P feeling like the evolution of Gunstar and Alien Soldier into 3d. I liked S&P 2 but you barely had any reason/opportunity to stay grounded - I don't mind the Space Harrier approach for spectacle but loved shit in the original like the train area where you jumped between cars while still running and blasting forward.

Yeah,the good thing about S&P is that it's a fast-paced action game that you can beat in under an hour, so all the over the top and flashy cutscenes are entertaining, or you can just skip them and don't follow the story, the game is fun anyway.
If anything, the weird story gave us a very memorable final boss, so it's cool. You fight a planet, not some multiwinger angel.

Not really 3D and not the same, but you should check out Hi no tori/Firebird for MSX (not the Famicom game that's a side-scroller). This game also incorporates shooting+jumping while moving forward like S&P, good use of the platforming, you can jump in all directions.

If this is what you're going to pull to defend yourself and your "hardcore arcade gamer" facade, I think it's better if you don't post. One thing is to shitpost against RPGs. Consoles of later generations has better hardware than older arcades, so you can't play the "muh hardware" card, and many console games retained arcade design and criteria (case in point most treasure games, S&P in particular is something that could have been a coin-op game).
