Another fun wad is the Japanese Community Project. The levels vary greatly in quality and difficulty but overall it's super solid and gives you a taste of what DOOM wadding is like in other parts of the world.

useful trick for anyone who cares: you can easily detect whether some ACS is running in zandronum by doing this:

I fucking love the Death Wish fan campaign for Blood in Fresh Supply holy shit every level is so god damn good when it comes to both enemy placement and atmosphere, this is really fucking tops.

The only thing I fucking hate is shooting those small fucking rats and choking hands when their sprites damn near disappear by aiming down.

This guy took several SSG shots almost point blank and stood around walking around like a retard and doing nothing.

I guess these guys are color coded? the blue ones drop instantly with one or two rifle shots.
Also I don't remember exploding that many barrels but it took me an eternity to clear out an open area and they still kept reviving, probably a healer imp that got revived himself but Im not sure.

I had this same issue. Turns out that the jackboots and chaingunners wear body armor now, which gives them great resistance to small-arms fire. You'll need 7.76 or explosives to drop them quickly, or you can try and shoot their heads and legs, depending on which enemy type it is.

Shotguns generally suck at defeating armor, the pellets are perfectly spherical lead balls, and are pretty modest in energy (compared to rifles), any good soft armor easily stops a point blank tightly grouped shot.
Of course, that energy doesn't go nowhere, so even if the soft armor absorbs all the pellets at one concentrated point (or even spread out), that shit will still hurt like balls, potentially cracking ribs.

On hard armor, as in a carrier with steel or ceramic plates, the pellets would straight up flatten out against the plate, and the much larger surface area of the plate would make the impact not really hurt that badly.

You can take 4 mil ammo and 7 mil casings and process them into new 7 mil rounds. Either by feeding the resources into your Liberator and letting it do a little war dance as it spits out new bullets, or finding an ammo processor box that does the same thing. It's not a 1 to 1 conversion though.

If memory serves right you'll automatically do this between levels as well if you have the materials.

Your ZM66 tactical reloads will leave you with a lot of unreliable caseless powder and lead and primers. Firing the Liberator leaves a lot of cases without powder or lead. I can't bring myself to use the Lib, that thing is too high maintenance for my tastes. I know the gun is so fucking strong that it's arguably less of a hassle than the ZM, but I'm stubborn.
I wish there was at least one other weapon type, because I fucking love the feel of the shotguns but their diminished effect against armor and shields turns me off from using them.

While Doom 1's bestiary was adequate, too many monsters were basically using the same attacks, just with varying damage and health. doom 2's monsters are a lot more unique, each one adding new dynamics to fights. The Hell Knight is the only one that wasnt unique, but them being a half-health baron allowed for more oppurtunities to use them.

Some mapsets may be designed to be played in a progressive fashion, but maps effectively requiring you to have collected gear from previous levels to be playable are quite uncommon (I can't think of any examples).
If there are any, they're likely short sets by inexperienced mappers.

The reasons being that *very* few people test just one map in a set by playing progressively up to that point, it takes too much time, and it's not unusual for maps to be developed 'out of order' (such as making map 6 before map 2), for maps to be developed alongside each other, and even for maps to be developed by multiple different people, all things which would complicate such an approach, giving yoy much more to account for.
It's just a million times easier and faster to just load the map up on the spot and have you be able to get gear as necessary for taking the level on (which doesn't *have* to make the level significantly easier).

You could of course devise a method and scheme to facilitate this, but most aren't going to bother. Anyway, just because maps are developed to be playable from pistol start, it doesn't mean you're not supposed to play progressively ever, I only play progressively, because it makes episodes/megawads feel more like continuous adventures, rather than a disconnected set of challenges.

Barons really aren't that much more threatening with the low pain chance, as their attack is still basically just a single fireball that's easily dodged in most environments. The most threatening uses of Barons tend to be in tight spaces, and that's largely because their high HP makes it easier to get cornered before killing them.
Archviles are an enemy where low pain chance plays a bigger role in their threat, I'd say. Only way to avoid their attack is to break line of sight, and their low pain chance makes it very rare to interrupt it, meaning you can't just easily brute force them.

I was getting a bit frustrated with some of the new changes while capturing footage but I just finished my second playthough of Diabolus Ex, this time in Hideous, and damn this just goes so well with HD, I was thinking "shit I don't have summons this time for the roof" but fortunately two HERPS did the trick. Some of them are rushed and poorly textured (E2, E3, Petersen's Doom 2 stuff), others are just a large pile of clusterfuckery with random authors and their random levels (E4, TNT, Master Levels).

Figured this would be a good place as any to ask:

I recently started working on my own DOOM WAD. The map making is going fine, but every time you pick up a new weapon, the game crashes. It only happens in this WAD I'm working on. If it matters, I'm using Doom Builder 2. Has anyone had any trouble with this? It only started occuring after I started making complex geometry with the editor - and even then, it's not that complex. It just seems that if there's anything more than an empty room, it'll crash.

I just imported resources from the original DOOM.IWAD. I couldn't have tampered with anything.

I made a simpler room and hallway before with item pickups & enemies and it was just fine. Once I made a room like this, it goes to shit. Found out your problem. You have the map configured to use the Doom 1 and Doom 2 IWADs as base resources. This causes issues in your map such as a door not playing a sound in E1M1 and the game to crash on startup on Map01.
Fortunately the fix is simple pick one IWAD to use a base resource, since you mentioned importing Doom resources I imagine you wanted to use Doom 2 as a base. Also if you want Doom resources such as textures, skies, or music then you can download a texture pack or import the music yourself.

It's not. Knee Deep In The Dead is fine, good even, but it's very overrated, it does exactly one theme for all of the episode.
The Shores Of Hell and Inferno on the other hand start mixing in a lot of hell into the techbases, and they're much more varied techbases, on top of featuring more varied content in terms of monsters and items.

There's no berserk packs in E1, there's no cacos in E1, there's no plasma rifle in E1, there's not much in terms of hellish stuff in E1.
While we're at it, Sigil was pretty damn good, not disputing that part.

I can use more of the AI upscaled sprites in Death Wish in BuildGDX than in Fresh Supply.
Honestly no port is perfect.
Fresh Supply is the easiest to get into but has the least moddability and some of the damage is still off though its most noticeable using spray cans on bloated butchers. At least the skybox tapers off nicely instead of just cutting off at the top.
NBlood is good but isn't compatible with a lot of mods, I also think that it has the least easy to use menus, and the skybox isn't tall enough its really easy to see the problems. Plus some visual glitches on some levels. Probably the most accurate though. BuildGDX is the worst optimized but it's the first so pretty much everything moddable is built for it.

I would say the first 3 levels are a nice buildup, and Military Base gives a new kind of style for the secret map.

Then the non-Romero M4 stalls the episode with its generic look. You can say the same about M5 and M6 too, but M5 has a memorable layout, while M6 is the first truly challenging level.

M7 is the culmination of the episode, the grand finale before the boss level. M8 is very different.

I'm glad John created an M4 and M8 alternative. They look more advanced than the original episode, but the vibe is the same, you can feel the 1993 winds with those levels. I guess it would make more sense to have the episode as: M1-M3, (M9), M5-M7, then M4b and M8b. M4 looks totally out of place in that early spot, but it would make sense as a Computer Station followup.

A shame that some Eternal designs are overdetailed because i like the idea of the Kahn Maykr.
It being a metal angel with a brain almost draws a parallel to the SMM, so there's some potential of Heaven and Hell having these contrasts, patterns and similarities.
But then there's the lore and how Hell was simplified as fuck and at best being either an extension to Doom 64's Hell or Beksinski inspiration.
I imagine a "simplified"/"attempt at being classic" version of it being like a female angel statue made of metal where the brain is shaped like a pope had, with wires and metal around it and the feather wings are made of gold.
Heaven is one of those things that probably should have been tried in the previous games to even work in Eternal, even if old id wouldn't think about it.
Doom 3 could have made them victims of Hell like humans and martians and play a cutscene of some angel getting ripped apart by an Hellknight while angel babies are transformed into the bug demon Cherubs.
Her name and voice acting still sound a bit "eh".

It can play wads but anything modern won't run at acceptable FPS.

Brutal Doom for example isn't going to be Fullspeed even when you drop the resolution. I tried the castlevania TC and it ran at like 5fps. The recent Halloween jam wad crashes the app.

Obviously older stuff will work fine though. Also, you can overclock the switch which would likely help running more intense wads and mods but I've not personally tinkered with that yet just out of laziness to get it set up.

must have? no, vanilla is fine, but if you want to spice things up, go either hexercise (its old tho) or cronos unleashed (mage is shit with this mod tho, so if you wanna go mage, dont play it)
OR
just go pure autismo with latest wrath of cronos (6 playable classes, warcraft inspired spells, xp, lvling up, stats, alchemy etc.) or go with woc+hexercise combined mod (it uses older version of woc, with only 5 classes)

Return to na pali has some decent maps, but that voice and the new weapons ruin it for me. I know a lot of people like the assault rifle, but it's honestly shit.
