how important is audio when playing retro games?
I personally play all my games on mute

Do you at least put on other music? Or just sit in silence like a psycho?

Since retro games rely a lot more on quick control response, audio feedback can be really vital to playing certain games.

I'd say it's pretty important to get a proper feel for a game, but it totally depends on the game. Some game would be unplayable without sound I'm sure, some would play just fine.

King's Quest 5 CD-ROM version seems to be completely textless, or at least the Windows version of it is. Playing on mute means you won't know what's being said the entire game. Lots of 90's games didn't come with subtitles. Myst has a puzzle that's completely sound-based, and can't be completed without being able to hear. The clues to get through the maze are also audio-based.

Depends on the game. Largely unnecessary for someone who plays translated dating sims and can't understand what the animus are saying.

I like game music. Some games have songs that bring the memories rushing back since I associate the good times with the melodies. The feel of some games are enhanced for me with their soundtracks and unique sound.

Depends on the game.
You should never play Soul Reaver without audio.
But you can absolutely play Mr. Driller without audio.

Would you rather be blind instead of deaf? I knew a blind dude and he “said” he’d rather be blind. I also fucked a blind chick who said she was ok being blind but being deaf would suck ass

I used to play it a lot back in the day, but always on mute because I found the sound effects annoying. I feel retarded, this game has so many nice songs

Not OP but I usually listen to an audiobook or something when playing old games especially. Most of the music in them is grating to me. I'll turn effects on and music off if the game allows it though.

I played Banjo Kazooie on mute because my assfucker dad had banned me from games. And then I got to the quiz at the end and lost due to questions about music cues

I know this is a thread made by a lonely anon to get replies and attention but it depends on the game

Between having nice music or sound cues I'd say it's rare to find a game that'd be better to play in silence

There's a game on Saturn, Kaze no something or other, which has NO VIDEO OUTPUT whatsoever - it is purely audio based.

I always laugh my ass off when I see emulator compatibility lists saying "doesn't work - no image, only audio keeps playing".

I listen to audiobooks when I do a lot of things, some because I know I might not get to them otherwise and with some others I just really like the reading, like Ethan Hawke's Slaughterhouse Five. I dunno, most old games didn't have great audio so I'd rather listen to something else if it doesn't make me lose out on gameplay cues.
