>oh shit dog they have wordplay!
There is nothing inherently special about Japanese prose, there's good and bad, and the good is just on par with the good in other languages, roughly. There are some interesting quirks that are unique to Japanese writing, just as there are interesting quirks in English or Spanish or whatever other language. Your fetishization does not magically improve it.

You know, the other day I was watching an episode of anime. I know Japanese, but it had English subtitles from the DVD.

It was a lengthy dialogue between two schoolgirls, with maybe only 4-6 words per line. But what struck me was that the English translation felt so boring. They were just very plain, easy-to-understand sentences.

But the Japanese, it was so rich in nuances. The translation, though perfectly accurate, failed to carry over everything that made the Japanese dialogue interesting.

That is what you are missing.

A lot of the flavor of the language comes from stuff like that. When you do try to accomplish this in English, you end up with shit like the modern translations of the Dragon Quest games. In japanese, the characters are all speaking japanese, but they sound distinct from each other. In english, they all sound like retarded ESLs that can barely communicate with you.
In short it's not like these are masterpieces of literature that will change your life, they just have a lot more flavor in the original language.

First off you really shouldn’t make fun of ESL peeps. They’re smarter than 90% of people who only speak English by default. Second you know what language is actually vastly different than any other language in terms of syntax and has tons of movies, games, music and other media that isn’t translated? Portuguese. Japan has slightly different syntax but very rarely in a way that doesn’t have a sensible translation or can’t be derived from context from a straight translation. Then spergs say stuff about dialect as if American English doesn’t have many dozens of regional dialects that come across in a variety of media but are easily translated and understood. The dialect isn’t that serious. You’re missing out on something fairly minor. And when translators do make an effort to account for it by giving characters Boston, Texas, New York, Floridian or other dialects to show they’re speaking different spergs still bitch. It’s really annoying

I live in Delaware. I don’t speak Portuguese I’m just making a point that it’s ridiculous to say you need to learn Japanese to play this stuff. It just isn’t that deep or profound and if it was it would’ve been translated long ago. That’s also the case for any good Russian movies/books, French or German media. If it’s good it’s usually translated well or at least adequately. I can’t think of a “must play” untranslated game. Just some weeb shit

Japanese is a high context language, the word 走る for example means: he runs, she runs, they run, we run, it runs, he'll run, she'll run, they'll run, we'll run etc. etc. depending on the context, the context is not textual, no AI translater can make a better guess than any other. In recent years there have been a number of 'groundbreaking' new JP->ENG translators that have had normalfags going wild, but what these are doing are actually not translating at all, but merely outputting sentences that are parsable in English using the Japanese words as guidelines, in terms of translation accuracy they are in fact worse than the older machine translators that spat out semi-accurate but non-parsable translations. These new machine translators are writing complete fiction.

Speaking of Portuguese in my other posts. Compare the behemoth if the Portuguese or American English page of dialects on Wikipedia versus Japanese. There aren't many Japanese translators and companies skipped localizing a lot of games due to economic factors. Fan translators are also extremely limited in their platforms; you can count translations to disc based systems on a hand.

There's no actual Chinese in the sign, 大泉町立西小学校 災害時避難場所 is simply written without Kana. It clearly uses Shinjitai and not Simplified or Traditional Chinese.
Traditional:大泉市立西小學校 災害時避難場所
Simplified: 大泉市立西小学校 灾害时避难场所

There's a reason why people complain about translations all the time because reinterpreting anything but the most simplest of statements introduces writer bias into what the translator does which warps the writer's intent and machine translation at worst outright gives you trash translations that are worst than the old NES mistranslated localization.
