One of my favorite series. And one of the best Konami's franchises.

I miss the old Konami. Even with license games, they were so creative. And they kept making awesome games till Wii era.

I think I'll never be able to play them because I'll never be good enough at shmups to get anywhere in the Gradius series so I could get the jokes in the Parodius series.

Everyone praises Sexy and all, but Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius ~Forever With Me~ is low key the best one. I think people play the relatively lacking SNES version and overlook how polished up the 32bit versions are.

They're more interesting than Gradius, but the gameplay still sucks. I hate the power up system in Gradius/Parodius, it's bullshit.

>> No.6137452

>>6136579
Mmmm, I like Oshaberi Parodius but I find it a bit less crazy and unispired than the rest, especially the bosses. The snes port has the japanese annoucer shouting which makes it a bit more awesome. My favourite Parodius is Gokujou Parodius. I believe it's like a perfect sequel: like the original but x100 times crazier, flashier and funnier (not that the origina lwas bad in any way).

>> No.6137527

>>6137368
Being able to choose the exact upgrade you want is a better power-up system than what most of the genre uses. Parodius fucks around with it a bit due to bells/roulettes, but the basic mechanics remain solid.

>> No.6137540

>>6137452
PS1/Saturn versions have the announcer as well, a female announcer for the 2nd player, cooperative play, more levels, higher resolution assets, and better audio/soundfonts It's clearly definitive and the best one.

>>6131418
I... like it. Sexy is the best.

>> No.6138423

>>6137540
What? I had no idea. Maybe I'm playing a game mode without announcer because all the options are in japanese and I'm not choosing it.

>> No.6138638

I'm very fond of them. Bit lukewarm on the MSX one and Da! but I really like Gokujou, Oshaberi and Sexy. You can just tell the devs loved working on them.
And after playing it, it's super obvious that Twinbee Yahho! was made by the Parodius team. Nice to see a shooter that wasn't just parody silliness.

>> No.6138643

>>6136579
I definitely only play Parodius now through their PS1 collections and releases. They're just completely the best ways to play them.

This is false, they stretch the 256px assets to 320px and look really terrible at some parts.

For me it's Hikaru.

Anyone here actually cleared Sexy Parodius, arcade version? Including the SPECIAL STAGE? Without continues/cheats/etc?

For a parody game, the developers were more free to explore new gameplay ideas, do whatever they want, and mix all sorts of styles. I get a bit obsessive about juggling the Twinbee bells to the right colors for maximum benefit which clashes with the need to get the powerup chips to buy the right ones. It still seems to be going strong through the Otomedius series, burned a lot of Microsoft Rewards points for all the DLC.

PS1/Saturn both have 256x240 modes so there's no need to stretch anything.
