Old DOS hacking is still my favorite thing. Would you mind explaining how you made that patch (tools, technique, etc...)? Was it hard to do?

>> No.6114908

>>6114357
I use IDA 5 for disassembly and patching. There's not much technique to it, just start documenting small functions and obvious data locations and you'll eventually have more context to figure out what the more complicated procedures do.

In this case I quickly found the main menu and figured out the difference between the resume and new game options. It's a single function that loads just one block of memory, so that's where the checkpoint data is. From there it's super simple, it's just one block of data that you save and load from a file, you don't even need to know what that data means. Changing things like gameplay logic takes a lot more work.

Also the link expired so here's a more permanent one: https://files.catbox.moe/ieho85.7z

>> No.6117489

>>6115858
Well I like assembly, but everything you do is tedious. Everything you do is done one little thing at a time.
From a C++ perspective, one might consider "X = X - 1;" a single thing, but in assembly it would look something like:

Load the Accumulator with the value found at 0xXXXX
Load the X register with the value 0x1
Clear status flags
Subtract the X register from the Accumulator
If the operation didn't trigger an underflow skip the next part
(handle underflow situation here)
Store the Accumulator into 0xXXXX

So that one little C++ operation took at least 5 operations, plus more for other situations.

Ok let's do this together.
What we will need is a Zelda 1 Rom, FCEUX emulator, & a Graphics Editor (I'll use YY-Char). Find these on the internet if you don't have them already and follow along. I suspect we can turn the shooting sword into bullets and edit things to make it more gun like.
First let's do something easy to warm up.
Fire up YY-Char and load the Zelda rom. Scroll down till you see some garbled graphics. To get the graphics to look right we need to adjust the offset by a couple of bytes, so press the - or + buttons (in the middle by the scrollbar) a few times.
Now change the "Pattern" to FC/NES x16 and the graphics should look correct in all but color, mostly.

Find the sword graphics, one for horizontal, and one for vertical. Draw bullets instead of the sword graphics.
Save the rom and test it. There will be issues, but we'll deal with them later. For now try this and post a screenshot of your results (anyone who wants to follow along is welcome too.) I'll continue with the next step once you do.

Next time we'll make the sword beam always shoot and maybe make the beam move faster.

For extra credit, try changing link's graphics to show him hold a gun.

I’ve been messing with the first Super Mario Bros making my own little hack.

Also been looking at a small amount of gamecube stuff.

Does anyone know up to what console hex editors are used to hack/read games? Like, I imagine wii games you can hex edit cause wii was so similar to gamecube. But what about PS2/3/4, wii u and switch, and xbox consoles? Or modern pc games for that matter?

I know hex editing can be used to edit game saves in modern games, but that seems to be the limit. Was there a shift away from hex in game development? Or do we just not have the tools yet for these consoles?

I ask because watching hex code run in real time can be super useful when it comes to understanding how a game works, and it seems like a really common methodality for hacking games, across all kinds of old systems. But not modern ones. Why?
