why does snes game boxes art look so damn good, bros?

I think the black border/background plays an important role. Notice how most games only use very few colors for the artwork as well.

This, it's great uniformity for the brand and allows the vibrancy of the colors to take center stage.
Contrast that to later Genesis games with an awful candy stripe on each title.

Except that looks like shit. I’m glad I’m not a seppo, play the original super Famicom games

I'm with you for the most part because they retained Japanese illustration that's been Americanized, but not completely culturally neutered like MegaMan 7. I appreciate Genesis boxes more only because most time they're an actual case and not just a box. The later produced games too especially with that badass

PAL boxes were colorful though. Some were blue, some were pink, some were yellow. More unique than NTSC one, but I grew up with PAL, so.

>> No.6124875

And I think SNES boxes look so good because majority of them used detailed, colorful, traditional art. GameBoy ones are also great. NES ones are a hit and miss because they either use too much blank colors (think early Nintendo ones like Balloon Fight) or simple logos and photographs. While by the N64 era most were pre-rendered 3D graphics.

Also, by the GameBoy Color era, Photoshop default effects came into play which resulted in outdated looking art. When the SNES/Genesis were around, even gradients were sometimes hand-painted.

Would rather kill myself. Did people know that they were playing in 50hz in the late 80's early 90's?

I had no idea, but then again I was younger than 13 and wouldn't care less. The first time I noticed the difference was while playing a PAL rom of DKC3 and then a NTSC one right after. Think I would want to play a FPS that runs at 8fps in 2020? Goldeneye in four player was standard. Most games didn't run at 60hz anyway.

FPS, not HZ. At least half of the SNES library ran at 30fps.

Goldeneye actually ran better on PAL, it received a proper optimisation and a slightly updated version of the game engine.

thats crazy to think that across the globe somewhere at the same time two kids were probably both turning on their snes and playing megaman x 1 in one shot, both playing the same skill level but PAL finishing second. Thats almost uncomfortable to think about knowing that time, in itself, plays a bigger role into our human lives and that somewhere else something i was doing every day, someone else was doing too but it was physically taking them longer due to the hardware of something, but its not like its bootleg like a dendy or anything but its just interesting to think about that. how odd. when you guys play retro over there do you guys re-hook it back up to a 50hz tv and play that? or are there ways to import a ntsc snes with a different AC adapter for PAL electric (the difference in outlets and plugs and what not) or is there a way to overclock consoles or something? import tvs? im very interested now.

I have since moved to NTSC land, so I would not be able to tell you that. But even back then there were ways to play NTSC-J carts where you would plug a PAL cart into the contraption, along with an NTSC-J one, and then you could play that on your PAL SNES. I'm not sure how that one worked as far as slow-downs, but I played that Japanese Mickey Mouse & Donald 3 game with it and didn't notice anything funky with it. It's like gaming on a 144mhz vs 59mhz monitor today. I have never played on a 144, so I don't know what I'm missing. I'm sure if I grew up on 144, 59 would feel terrible to my eyes.

There was also this gaming store that imported a GameCube from the USA, before it released in the EU, and when the GC did actually release in EU I didn't feel a difference. I'm pretty sure they hooked the NTSC GC to a regular TV also, but maybe with a converter.

I only found out in the ps1 era because some game magazine was explaining to one of their readers why they were getting better times in Gran Turismo on NTSC games than on the local PAL version when they got letters about it.

I didn't care much because I had never played the games in 60hz, and I still don't care much today.
In retrospect, I guess it sucked that we usually got inferior versions of 2D games, but a lot of 3D games took proper advantage of PAL's/SCART's higher resolution and better colors.

Cover art hand painted
I'm so glad I got to grew up with this instead of the CGI shit that is everywhere. Back then you couldn't just drop in models from in game and call that cover art.

That picture makes me nostalgic. I never played this game, but the graphics on the box remind me of playing vidya with my grandma as a kid. We mainly played Mario RPG.
