So I have an old school CH Products F-16 Combatstick (pic related), that I've logged a lot of hours with--I played through Descent I & II, TIE Fighter, and various Jane's flight sims with it.

Anyway, it uses the really old DA-15 pin connector, which is no longer supported by modern Windows. Any oldfags/boomers or whatever have any experience using a USB adapter with this sort of thing? I'm sure I have an old Gravis gamepad stored away somewhere too.

I have used the Rockfire RM-203 and RadioShack 26-728 gameport to USB adapters with great success. Not with the Combatstick specifically, but with several other DB-15 joysticks and they all worked perfectly.

Thank you anon, you are a Quality Dude™. I don't know why, but there are two of the things on PCCables;

Err, is there a difference?

I can't contribute to your solution, OP, I just wanted to say that is one handsome joystick.

It feels good in the hand, solid and well-built. The movement is smooth and the return-to-center spring is still strong while providing just the right amount resistence--though that is subjective. All the buttons and switches press with a satisfying 'click' and each one is slightly different. You can see there's even a little built-in throttle on the left side, opposite the vertical centering dial. I fucking loved this thing as a kid.

I forgot about all the mechsim games I played using this; Mechwarrior 2 & 3 & 4, and Battledrome to name a few. The stick doesn't twist, but eh. An old friend also had the Microsoft Sidewinder 'Force Feedback Pro' (in addition to a Combatstick) which seemed built for Mechwarrior. I think I also used it playing Battlezone, Necrodome, and the shareware of Terminal Velocity. Hell, I probably even tried playing DOOM or Heretic with it just for laughs. I wish I had the Pro throttle, maybe I'll find one secondhand someday.

Sorry, I don't know, but I've never known there to be 2 different adapters. Maybe just a difference in packaging.

I've seen DB-15 -> USB joystick adapters, but curiously none in the reverse direction.

Fair enough, I'll inquire directly just to be sure.

It is an outdated format, but for retro gamers with retro systems, it would be nifty to use modern peripherals in old games. Could be USB doesn't translate to DA-15, I'm not well-versed enough to know.

Betcha you could find a cheaper da15 to USB on ebay

I've never had any luck with usb gameport adapters. They tend to have poor analog resolution and don't support the proprietary protocols required for the extra buttons to work.
Just use a dos/win9x machine with isa sound card.

Search engines if anyone was curious (I know you're not), just to end the thread.

Unless, retro joystick/gamepad thread? Pic related is the Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro that my friend had back in the day. It was pretty nice, I thought the feedback was pretty cool.

For these you need to build your own adapter, https://github.com/tloimu/adapt-ffb-joy/wiki
Or buy the USB version of the joystick on ebay that still work with windows 10.

Microsoft was pretty good that way (at least back then), they updated a lot of popular models with the new USB format, and the Sidewinder line was fairly popular. They even had an official adapter, but it was packaged with a select few pads/sticks.

Same friend had pic related as well, the 3D Pro. The stick had twist, and that top button is actually an 8-way hat. You can see the throttle on the left of the base.

don't know about the combatstick, but the old fighterstick and throttle made their extra buttons and hats work by piggybacking on the keyboard connector, programmable through DOS software.
with the rockfire in 'CH mode' you only get 4 axis 4 buttons 1 hat, and no programming.

Checks out;

>Has Switch for different joystick types.
>M1: Thrustmaster FCS Compatible
>M2: CH Flightstick Pro Compatible
>M3: 4-Axis, 4-Button Joystick Compatible
>M4: Sophisticated 2-Axis, 8-Button Joystick Compatible

The CH Flightstick Pro is as you described, while my Combatstick is a little more complicated. Still, I suppose _some_ functionality is better than no functionality, and I've spent $25 on more foolish things.

Pic is the old Thrustmaster stick it's probably compatible with. This was top of the line back in the day.

thrustmaster used fixed value resistors on analog axis 3 for the hat switch, while CH used chorded combinations of the 4 buttons. both are ugly solutions but the backwards-compatibility was excellent, and they still work today, unlike the first generation of serial-port force feeback sticks, which were shoved into the memory hole.

I have experience making several USB adapters. Different sticks work different ways so unless you can find one that supports your stick or close enough that might be your only option. Since it's not <2010 I'm assuming you didn't even google to see if something's available?
