6121867 No.6121867 [Reply] [Original]

Playing this game for the first time on Nintendo Switch Online. There's definitely a few modern conveniences that this game is lacking.

There isn't a counter as to what percentage of the collectables of the area you've completed. There isn't an indicator that you collected a collectable. The wall jumping and space jumping mechanics are very difficult, to the point that they make the game less fun. It's almost as if they were unintentional, but there are clearly places in the game that use them.

You're not likely to 100% the game on your first playthrough so I wouldn't worry about it.

Keep practicing and you'll never unlearn it. If the Switch Online version has input delays I can understand that being a bit annoying. Just keep at it anon and if it's not for you it's no big deal.

Without existing nostalgia for it, you probably aren't going to enjoy if it you've experienced modern, far better takes on the genre. SotN is the only metroidvania that can still hold its own, so I'd recommend shitcanning SM and playing that instead if you aren't having fun.

Don't spread lies on the internet. I'll give this tough, maybe you're just really good at precise inputs but in comparison to most other timing based mechanics it is incredibly rigid and unforgiving. God help you if you have fat fingers and it registers even a wisp of a diagonal input.

Can't you even beat the game without it? Serious question.

That would make the game too easy. Hell, even if you do get everything in one play through that just makes the final bosses way too easy. You're just supposed to p lo at the game and explore, you'll have enough items by the end game just doing it that way. Wall jumping is easy though after you get used to it, as soon as the sprite changes then jump. You'll get the timing down and eventually not even need to focus on Samus while doing it.

And? Good for you. Apparently reading isn't one of your capabilities as I already said that may be the case.

Its the ONLY split second mechanic in any game I have trouble with and would often only be able to chain 2-3 or so in a row before it fails to trigger.

Wall jumping IS easy though. The problem is you don't take the time to practice it, just a little bit. It's not something braindead easy sure, but it is fairly easy to do if you're not mashing. The reason I know you're just fucking mashing is because you also think space jumping is hard, too. The timing on that is incredibly lenient.

I'll give you a little leeway if you're using a switch pro controller or a worn out SNES controller. The switch pro controller actually fucks up your inputs because it's very easy to misinput the adjacent cardinal due to a design flaw which makes you return to a regular jump position instead before you can grab the wall before you input your jump. If you have a worn out SNES controller, you get some similar problems or missed inputs. The membrane under the buttons gets worn out up over time and you get mushy buttons.

But I know you're just mashing and it's not these problems because you can't fucking space jump.

I mean, I wasn't entirely serious with my post but it gets to me that all these years you could've played these games on various emulators for free and gotten a better experience but all of a sudden, nintendo offers an "official" solution that costs money and people are all over it. I get it if you hadn't heard of the game or something, that's fine.

I've spent hours testing different emulators and playing on different systems and platforms. Switch online is not a great experience compared to other things I've tried, in terms of controller options, display options (practically non existent)

>> No.6122536

>>6122503
You don't even need to be a speedrunner to employ consistent wall jumps though. It's even an intended game mechanic. It just takes a little getting used to which may or may not be hard for someone depending on if they're used to mashing buttons versus timing button presses. It's not something like Mach-Ball or short boosting which are unintended physics exploits and can be difficult to nail down and will require a decent amount of practice time to do consistently.

This. Super Metroid isn't a collectathon, and if there had been a % counter, then people would just bitch that they're mad they have to collect everything, even when they don't. The game isn't about getting everything; it's about finding what you can and making do with it on your own. That's part of the whole "alien planet" experience.

Metroid usurped Super Metroid as "/vr/'s preferred Metroid" a while back when the anti-reddit/casual sentiment was first ramping up. The argument is that Super Metroid is baby mode because it auto-records a map, and NES Metroid is superior because it forces you to either remember or draw your own map.

R and D 1 worked on the Zero (same team as Super). They had ten years to think about how to take what that game did further.
