NESRGB toploader, multiple AV mod jailbar free toploader NES, 2600 composite mod, Arcadia 2001 AV mod, N64 RGB, Snes mini/jr rgb mod, consolized mvs, backlit/bivert gameboy dmg, broken ds made into a gameboy macro, recapped game gear, rgb modded pc engine, pal sms 2 converted to 60hz and correct color burst frequency so it's essentially an ntsc with kid alex as the built in game. Modchipped ps1, ps2, saturn. Dreamcast with usbgdrom, pico psu, noctua fan, huge clock battery, like the silver packs used in modern electronics, resettable fuse on controller port. Many arcade repairs, sticks, pad hacks, etc. RGB mods on consumer tvs. Many scart cables or scart to bnc pigtails. There are a bunch I'm forgetting, some jailbar reduction stuff, audio improvement etc.

Of all these, the absolute worst is the nesrgb mod. Nintendo has full plated through holes and you can fuck traces up super easily. I turn my soldering iron to max, 455f, and work fast. You have to have super heat with a huge tip and work fast. Desoldering guns would be a must if you wanted to do very many of them. I've done 3 total but would never do another without first buying a desoldering gun. I can do it without damage, but it's a pain in the dick using hand pumps and braid on all those pesky connections.

desoldering guns are amazing.
I spent $200 on my Hakko 808 and it was the single best purchase I've ever made in my electronics hobby kit. I love it dearly.

It has saved me from hand cramps and pulled traces.
It goes through through-hole plated components like a hot knife through butter. Literally.

It's also great for sucking up large solder globs from bigger components, like on old intellivision shielding, where they soldered it in place, or on CRTs to desolder large components like beefy capacitors or the flyback transformer.

They don't sell the 808 anymore, which is a shame.

I recently had someone do some upgrades on my Saturn. Modchip to play backups, bios changed to play all regions, a fram chip put to prevent saves from being lost, and a kinda uncommon mod, an optical toslink port put in, so I am able to tap into digital audio which I run over to a headphone amp.

I feel like I could easily get addicted to this hobby.. with some of the other common mods on other systems I am wondering if I should go analog RGB (to have the freedom of connecting to CRTs or an OSSC for digital TVs) or doing these HDMI mods. Like for NES and N64, RGB or HDMI? A sick part of my brain says I should double down and invest in multiple consoles and try out both mods..

Added 512K more RAM to my Amiga.
AV modded three famicoms.
AV modded one top loading NES.
modchipped two playstations (using AVR chips I flashed myself with PSNee).
RGB modded a SNES mini for someone else.
Mega amp modded a VA7 Model 1 genesis for someone else. Made my own PCB.
S-video modded the same genesis for someone else. Did point-to-point soldering there since there were maybe four components.
Buffered the sync line on my own Genesis Model 1 (VA6).
USB-modded a Sun type 5 keyboard (okay, maybe not a console mod).
Added pure csync output to a PSX with RCA jacks (just replaced the composite video signal to the yellow jack with a pure csync signal made by ORing the vsync and hsync pins of the GPU together).
Added termination and decoupling to the RGB lines on all my consoles that didn't already have it.
Cut the tabs out in the cart slot of my N64 so I can play japanese games (Custom Robo).

Probably forgetting a few things.

When my car has issues, I take it to a mechanic.
When I want some really well prepared food, I got to a restaurant and have it cooked by a chef or whatever.

I've skimmed some online videos, watching people do mod work and have considered trying it myself, it would certainly be cheaper, and I imagined it would feel more grafftying, knowing that you personally did the work, but ultimately it was so much easier to just send my system off to have someone else do it. Those SATA adapters are usually just fine, I don't really think there's much need for a modchip on PS2 unless you really wanna use the unreliable CD laser in your PS2 playing burned PS1 games until it dies.

Yeah but it still "needs" new laser (400C) and a fan (loud as fuck). Since I'm doing all this might as well install modbo while waiting for sata board. Still need to buy some kynar and hotair gun

well, with a modchip and PS1VModeNeg you can play ntsc-ps1-games on a pal-ps2 (ad vice versa) with the 100% correct output-frequency, just like with a us-ps2/ps1. 59.82Hz instead of ~59.4Hz. Some scalers/lcd-TVs may not like that slighty off-spec frequency.
on a ps1, you'd need to add a hardware-mod (DFO).

Thanks for reminding me about fucking clocks and crystals in PAL systems. Damn, we PALfags are really screwed if we want to mod vr consoles. No wonder people go emulation or fpga.
That DFO looks really cool and also works with MD, nice. I don't really care for ps1 on ps2. but good to know there is this PS1VModeNeg thingy. That ancient chip on ps2 can't even auto launch ps1 without fidgeting with power button at the right time

RGB mods done:
Atari 2600
NES
N64

NES also has Blinking Light Win mod.

All systems are now RGB enabled and hooked into a PVM-14L5 via an Otaku 6-port SCART switcher:
1. Atari 2600
2. Apple IIgs
3. NES
4. SNES
5. N64
6. VACANT

I am finding it difficult to choose which system to become the 6th hooked up to the switcher.
The options are: Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Cube, Sony PS2, Sony PS3.

All currently connected systems have a flashcart or similar flash storage solution. Except the Atari 2600.

Neither was emulation.

Why go down the emulation route when most (soon to be all) of the real hardware systems have all published games via flashcarts?

How often do you honestly play 2600 games? I only feel the need to hook mine up occasionally, not often enough to justify taking up a spot on the switch. I don't have a IIGS, but I do have a C64 and a VIC-20, and the same applies for those. So personally I'd remove the 2600 and IIGS and replace them with the Mega Drive, GameCube, and PS2. The PS3 is shit, and is honestly better on an HDTV or high-res PC monitor.

It went bad. In the morning I checked the board and there was a joint in pin29 and 30 of the PPU-1. Pico fuse was also dead. I fixed the fuse and joint with solder paste and hot air. Everything looked good.
Bingo - There is power now but console go apeshit with soke and sparks from PPU-1. Sparks and smoke somewhere on pins 25-29. There is somehow connection on pin 25 and 27.
What should I do? Desolder pins 25-30 and apply new solder?
