Favorite retro speedruns? Especially around the NES and SNES eras?

>> No.6121365 [DELETED]

I'm literally adicted to watching runs of smb 4-2 to pass time, like the whole thing makes my dilating routine a lot more bearale

>> No.6121372

4-2 is the bane of SMB runs lmao, its awesome when they go right though. Ever seen the video of like 200 Andrew G runs superimposed on each other until only 1 gets fast 4-2? Iconic.

Zelda Majora's Mask and Zelda OOT 100% runs. Many different glitches that save minimal time and im always impressed with the routing put into making such a long run efficient.

Speedruns are a shit tier version of TASes. Autistically aiming for subpixel precision to save a few frames is more entertaining than watching some tranny do a level and reset when he fucks up.

>> No.6124597

Ninja Gaiden 1 is really good, Arcus mashes down and sword attack so fast on boss fights they go down in seconds and it's hard af to pull off.
>implying speedrunning is only zoomers
Arcus is over 30 and used to record his runs on VHS. People in their 40s do it too. Stop being retarded.
>>6122458
You probably watched too much SMB and think it's representative of the majority. Most runners do full runs often just to maintain consistency, SMB is a big exception in that regard.

I prefer TAS to regular speedruns since I'm more interested in seeing the game pushed to its limits than in fellating the player for their skill/patience.
This one gets pretty hilarious after the around the halfway point.

The problem with TAS is not does it exploit impossible inputs it also manips the RNG. that one move that you know would never work? the author re-recorded that 200 times to get that shit to magically shit out a positive result. Real runs are more exciting not because they fellate runners but for the fact how much pressure you are under

>> No.6124654

>>6124645
Real runs manipulate RNG too. Especially with the original SMB. It’s practically a requirement to get a lot of tricks to work. And honestly in terms of time requirements TAS runs are far more taxing. And many breakthroughs made in TAS transition to real runs. Go look at the re-record count for some popular TAS and you’ll see how ridiculous it gets. Especially for something like Mario Kart or EB

>> No.6124668

>>6124654
>Real runs manipulate RNG too
You can only manip in real time if there's a setup. Like mashing at the title screen. that's why SMB runners can do what they do, because there are so few breaks in their movement the options of what rng can shit out are limited so they can read how goombas walk and go from there, that's the setup.

TAS manipulations are bullshit, you just re-record something that has no known way of being controlled in real time and you stitch that together in bizhawk. It's literally just a compilation of the most impossible luck segments put together.

Mr. Gimmick WR speedruns are fantastic

>> No.6124691

>>6124668
I mean that’s kind of the appeal of it. And it isn’t just mashing A there’s several specific strats that we’re found because of TAS that are commonly used. Same with SMB3 and SMW and Mario Kart.

>>6124691
That's fair, I just think as a newbie you're better off appreciating RTA runs and how much is required to be good than just watch TAS and go
>k you just need to know this and that and put time into making it
like at least you can slowly realize how shit is done thru improvement, with TAS a good portion of inputs are not doable for humans

>> No.6124738

>>6121360
I remember the first "speedrun" I ever saw was an avi of some guy running Mario 3 in 11 minutes. I downloaded it off of some sketchy Mario fan-site back in like 2000 or something. Shit blew my mind. My second favorite was a 4.5 hour Chrono Trigger speedrun my friend and I happened across back when Youtube first launched. We watched the whole thing in one sitting and it was a pretty good time to see our favorite game being absolutely trivialized.

>>6124645
>it also manips the RNG
That's the whole point. I'm not that other anon, but I also enjoy TAS videos because they act as a theoretical "what if" scenario for the most PERFECT playthrough of the game. Plus I like them because it's one of the few ways to guarantee there's no fucking commentary on the video.

>> No.6124748

>>6124729
>you're better off appreciating RTA runs and how much is required to be good
Why though? I just watch these videos when I want background noise because TV is trash. I don't need to "appreciate" anything.

>> No.6124758

>>6124748
>Why though?
It depends, if you're you and want background noise, there's no problem. But if you want to see what makes speedrunning game x truly challenging you may want to explore what's actually doable, not a highly improbable luck compilation with inhuman inputs.

>> No.6124761

>>6124738
My own experience was actually pretty shitty. I was co-oping a NES game with a friend and we needed a way to get through a boring section and looked up a TAS to replicate it. Only years later I realized how truly impossible it was to attempt it. We just assumed the run was "cheated" and moved on and that's likely how normies perceive TASing

>> No.6124781

Some speedrunners are extremely talented, like the top SMB and Super Metroid runners.

I used to speedrun myself, but stopped partly cause it can be a soul suck. Imagine getting a hair's length to the holy grail and then losing it over and over.

That, and there were obviously people with more gaming talent than myself

>> No.6124797

>>6124781
It's healthy to just a pick a game you like practicing and enjoy that. The only times I committed to speedrunning something was when a game that was fun to practice seemed like an obvious choice.

I understand quitting though, it always becomes too much work to bother with but sunk cost in time forces you to finish.

This one, because this is actually really hard to do, especially continuous.

Plutonia was the hardest levelset published for Doom, and Nightmare difficulty was a difficulty setting added in a patch of the first game, mostly as a joke response to people complaining that the game was too easy.
Nightmare difficulty, aside from having the highest monster count, will alter monster behavior, mostly by making them attack much more frequently (this makes shotgun zombies worse than ever), the Pinkie demons will run and bite at twice the speed, making them far more threatening, etc.
Since the monster behavior is altered, this means that the way encounters are set up in levels might just not be playable, as the monsters will do things the author of the map doesn't expect them to normally do.

On top of that, 30 seconds after a monster is killed, it will resurrect, which means you can't ever clear out an area to establish any kind of foothold, you can never get max kills, and secret areas or detours aren't always viable as they are either not worth the extra time spent going for them as monsters get up again, as you'll come out using up what you find real soon, in spite of the difficulty doubling the value of ammo pickups.
This difficulty, though not actually intended to be played seriously, is actually suitable for doing a speedrun, because the only actually viable way to play it is to fight your way to the exit before you get overwhelmed or run out of resources.

Couple all of this with Doom's faux RNG tables, which can be vexing enough for just a normal speedrun, and you've got an incredibly challenge this guy takes on with some ridiculous pro plays.

That's true, and in that sense they're not impressive or skillful, but at the same time it can funny to see the sheer bullshit maneuvers that you can cook up with TAS.

Tbh I was expecting that soccer game to be a boring TAS but it got pretty funny when it started doing set pieces from opponents' goal and out of bounds. But I never cared for sth like SMB TAS and still wouldn't, at least you know how hard fpgs are when humans are doing it. else it'd be a pretty boring platformer to watch.

Nobody forces you to autistically grind a speedrun. Time attack is a valid reason to attain mastery in single player where it's seemingly pointless.
