What retro games are quality benchmarks for 'being good' at video games? Not the hardest games ever, but games that take a veritable amount of skill to complete, that can't be cheesed, that don't rely on luck or just repeating the same sections over and over again a la Battletoads or the average shmup.
Here are a few I feel deserve to be in this rank:
>Pocky & Rocky (SNES)
>After Burner II (Genesis)
>Metal Slug X (Arcade)
>Umihara Kawase (SNES)
>F-Zero X (N64)
>Mad Panic Coaster (PS1)

Arena shooters and Fighting games in general.

And Metal Slug only counts if we're talking a 1CC.

just shut the fuck up, you can get good at any game by just playing it over and over again

>> No.6112738

Not as hard as the games you mentioned obviously, but I think SMB1 fits this description.

Being able to beat a game is beyond most people. Also fighting games.

Alien Soldier is literally what >>6112674 said: Just play it over and over and you will start to notice boss patterns and other things that you didn't get in your first playthroughs.

Some tips:
-Learn Epsilon-Eagle's entire moveset (Zero Teleport, Counter Force, Ura Mode, etc.)

-Flame Force and Lancer Force are the best weapons in the game and have different sizes of Counter Force (Flame Force has the biggest hitbox). Pick two of each one.

-Flame Force doesn't work with mechanical enemies but is great against insect bosses.

-Learn to use Counter Force against enemy projectiles to reflect or transform them into health

-Using a Zero Teleport with full health gives you a very powerful attack that can kill some bosses in seconds if done at the edge of the screen. Don't pick many health upgrades (just two is enough), though. Sometimes, you will need a Zero Teleport urgently

-Replay your most difficult boss battles on a emulator with savestates and repeat them again, again and again until you finally see what you need to do

-Lancer Force has a annoying cooldown time that can be bypassed using the weapon menu after you shoot. You need to be very close to the enemy to use this trick, though.

-Some bosses will do a specific attack if you are too near to them or shoot too much

Were you surprised by the amount of story in the game? I emulated it a few days ago and thought it was funny. Great game.

There are none. MSX, F Zero and Umihara Kawase all require countless hours of trying and failing until you get anywhere, the latter two even rely on you building muscle memory and sense of timing through repetition. You just come off as dumb desu.

How come nobody ever thought of that? We'll call it "training" and make a fortune!

That's his point tho, OP's the one being an idiot asking for skill based games that don't require you to get skilled through practice

yeah, the intro star wars scrolling text is almost comically long.

>> No.6113925

What OP is actually describing is what golden age arcade games did. Randomness + endlessly increasing speed = a literal score of how good you are at a video game.
