I have a softmodded PAL PS1 (UniROM) that can boot out of region games, but this weird coloring happens when I try to boot NTSC-J games on it (not my picture).

I couldn't find any conclusive explanation on how to fix this, just threads with guesses. Some people say you just need a proper RGB SCART cable to get rid of it, but I remember seeing some people say you need some specific modchip.

Any help?

>> No.6108828

does it happen with ntsc-u games too?

Couldn't say, I only have PAL and NTSC-J games available.

What model PSX, how are you connecting it to your TV?

>> No.6108923

>>6108914
SCPH-5552 and I'm using composite SCART or whatever the non-RGB SCART is called. I'm gonna get a RGB SCART cable but I first wanna make sure I can actually fix this problem.

You need to add NTSC color carrier crystal if you want modulated colors. Later models do not have place for it and need more modding. Best just use RGB.

Sounds like your TV supports NTSC, but does the PSX actually output the correct frequency? Did they come with oscillators for both NTSC and PAL?

>> No.6109073

>>6109013
Not OP but they don't. You have to mod it in.

What kinda mod do I need?

>> No.6109120

>>6109081
Dual frequency oscillator mod. Some of the better ones actually can detect which one you need and supply the correct frequency without you needing to flip a switch. In the most simple of cases, it's just a CDCE913 programmed to take clock from one of the xtals and convert it to the PAL frequency and the NTSC frequency, and you use a switch.

Alrighty, I'll start looking at those then. They don't have any negative long term effects on the console, right?

There is no color carrier frequency in RGB because the colors exist as separate signals.

Just play like that, looks fabulous.

the sync is still slightly off, though.
but I doubt that's the cause of OP's issue.

Emulate instead, PAL is objectively worse than NTSC-U emulation.

No, not emulating PAL, emulating NTSC-U instead.

If you get an even vaguely decent PAL CRT that supports RGB scart, and an RGB Scart cable for the PS1 you can play ALL Playstation games at the correct screen resolutions/aspect and framerate, whether that be PAL or NTSC. You don't even need to get NTSC games to play them at the original native framerate, there are loads of ways to hack PAL games into NTSC using gameshark codes, and as 90% of them had no effort put into converting them to PAL they will run at the correct speed and resolution indistinguishable from the NTSC release (you may need to adjust the picture position as many have the black border added on still).
Americans trying to talk about PAL consoles is deeply embarrassing as they have no fucking clue about any of it other than the same memes they keep copying from each other.
