Why is it that some of the best shmups never got the recognition they deserve. Varth is one such game. Sure its too long (is this a bad thing?) but the game is an amazing classic capcom shmup. Music and graphics are excellent and the gameplay is fun.

Games like R-Type 1 might be more challenging but to get to that challenge you have to wade through boring awkward bullshit. The first loop only starts getting interesting on stage 6 and by that point you only have a few minutes until you beat the game. The hitboxes are weird, the bosses either have easy safe spots/weaknesses or are very rng based and annoying, and the entire game feels like a slog. Leo is tighter and has god tier aesthetics.

Been trying to wrap my mind around Soukyugurentai. Am I basically correct in thinking that its about being able to identify situations where the lock-on isn't going to get you a favorable score multiplier to avoid the x.5 penalty as much as you can? And also not letting overcommitting to the lock on cause you to let too many enemies get away
