6099967 No.6099967 [Reply] [Original]

One of the worst levels ever designed in any game ever.
I always say that my half-life play-through is done once I enter Xen because it's just so tedious.
Thank fuck for Black Mesa: Xen.

>Thank fuck for Black Mesa: Xen.
I'm glad they turned a fairly short but kind of tedious section of the game into a protracted half-life 2 style puzzle quest where you pick up things and put them down, and plug in the same big plugs as in hl2. Xen really needed that kind of game play for the finale of half-life, boring and pathetic puzzles that basically solve themselves. Oh and lots more fauna.

Black Mesa is easily the worst way to play half-life and the only people who like it are graphics kiddies.

Xen is obnoxious but calling it the worst designed levels ever is a major over exaggeration. It's not good but it's certainly playable. But yeah I usually end when getting to xen too

Retard OP is only capable of flanderizing the problems with Xen because he can't do basic first person platforming. Black Mesa: Xen looks like typical fan mod dogshit anyways.

Congratulations?

Conversely, I remember that on my first playthrough, as a kid, I lost almost all my health and ammo over the course of the chapter and it took a bajillion tries to kill the sleeping houndeyes in the kennel room just before Questionable Ethics. The one moment of frustration in the game for me, really, so much so that it's one of the only things I remember from that playthrough.

I think it's also the visuals. I get they were trying to make it mundane, but they didn't have to make it dull. Duke 3D does the mundane, but it's a very fun interpretation of it.

This shit is broken on Xash3D. If I fuck up a jump on Xen and reload a save, it just gives me a black screen and I can't see anything. And if I manage to do clear the level without dying, it'll just give me the black screen when it loads Gonarch's Lair.

Half-Life has a requirement for spatial awareness that many other games abstract away. This is admittedly difficult to get a grasp of, but the jumping segments are over within a few minutes. I don't understand how they can give anyone PTSD.

He’s right though. HL2 was never a good game. It was a tech demo that was there to show off then-cutting edge facial animation and physics.

This. The focus of the game are the NPC and obkect interactions which is boring as fuck. When you get to actual singleplayer gameplay the game has little to offer in terms of challenge, the combine and antlions are a fucking joke.

>> No.6110882

I used to think Xen was fine since it was unique to the rest of the game with On A Rail and Residue Processing sticking out as the worst chapters. The platforming isn't really annoying except for the side chambers that the Nihilanth sends you to. Setting-wise though, it feels very barebones since I've played Black Mesa. The environment is empty and there aren't any cool scripted sequences. I know there are 20 years between the 2 games but the earth segments in HL had fleshed out environments and scripted sequences. I know they rushed Xen and it shows. Black Mesa had some cool ideas for Interloper like a Vortiguant village, scenes of Controllers and Grunts oppressing Vortiguants and an alien lab studying stuff taken from earth. It would've been cool to see things like this considering the aliens there are as intelligent as humans
