It's a fucking DOS game, I can understand people asking for opinions before buying a $60 game or downloading a 100GB pirate repack of some modern bloat game, but this was a game sold on floppies in the mid 90's, you can easily play it and make your own opinions.
It's currently like $5 on steam/gog, if you don't want to pay for it, then with minimal google skills you can easily find the full game and run it in DOSbox or a source port, if you have a problem with piracy, then the shareware version is still out there with a whole gameplay episode to play through (several hours!).
You really have no excuse to try a retro game and a thread full of random people saying "yes"/"no" to you wont actually let you know if you like it. Also please don't give me the "my time is really valuable!" excuse, you're on 4channel, you have plenty of free time.

Used to play this as a kid.

Overall, it's a fun game. The gibs are some of the best in video game history. The weapons are pretty decent, especially the multitude of rocket launcher variants. The music is one of the most underrated soundtracks in the genre. And the humor and general "wackiness" are products of a time when developers were more willing to put crazy shit in their games, and the game is better off for it.

The only thing wrong with the game is that the level design is hit or miss, and when it misses, it misses pretty hard. A few of the levels are outright BAD, but there's also plenty of decent to good levels.

If you don't mind the occasional crappy level, then it's definitely worth playing. Personally I would recommend DOSBox instead of a port.

Yes, I think it's very fun. It's essentially your typical side scrolling shoot em up coin-op arcade game, but played from a first person perspective, a mutant between the FPS and the Shmup. The ludicrous tone of the game feels a lot like Mortal Kombat. When Doom moved away from most arcade elements, Rise Of The Triad went the other way and just absolutely reveled in it, and just decided to be as ridiculous as fucking possible.

There's a few places where it drags a little, but I never felt like it was enough to make the game a dismal experience.

It really does push the Wolf3d engine to it's limits, the problem being it came out after Doom and Heretic, I don't know why Apogee didn't license the Doom engine but I guess it's good they didn't because they probably would have passed on the Build engine if they did.

>> No.6096526

>>6096491
Rise Of The Triad was basically being developed right at the same time as Doom was, it was the project Tom Hall undertook after he got booted from iD in the middle of Doom's development, and then went to work at Apogee (who was iD's publisher at the time).
It was even going to be Wolfenstein 3D : 2 at first, before iD changed their minds.
Tom would even recycle a lot of his unused conceptual ideas he wanted to do for Doom, like the multiple characters with different stats and so on. If you've ever read Tom Hall's "Doom Bible" (his design document), you'll see a bunch of names and ideas which ended up in Rise Of The Triad.

Rise Of The Triad did come after Doom, but not by a huge amount of time, the shareware came out just about a year after Doom, in late 1994, and the full game in very early 1995, Doom 2 coming in late 1995. They could have tried to license the engine for Doom, and they had considered using Ken Silverman's Build Engine, but they had already done so much development by the time they had those opportunities, and had already changed design directions before, that it would just delay the game further.

>> No.6096540

Pretty okay but can't hold a candle to any of the classics like Doom, Duke 3D, or even Shadow Warrior.
The music is great and the levels are alright but the game design (infinite ammo bullet weapons, only one explosive weapon slot, most enemies in first 2 episodes are very similar hitscanners) is just fundamentally flawed and overly repetitive.

IIRC, Bobby Prince didn't have the same contract for his work as Lee Jackson did, the agreement between him and 3DRealms was that they would use his music in Duke Nukem 3D, and they would negotiate a new contract if they wanted to use his compositions again, even for ports and rereleases, as I get.

With Gearbox owning Duke Nukem 3D, they made that 20th Anniversary Edition, and forgot or ignored negotiating with Bobby Prince, just using his music anyway. Bobby tried contacting Gearbox multiple times, even Randy Pitchford specifically, but they ignored him until he lost his patience with them and finally filed a suit against Pitchford.
