It's a cutie and not a bad console to get into if you like Japanese shit. You can pick a core system up cheap and grab some jap hucards to go along with it. There are a lot of shmups and "cuteformers" like Bonk as well as the best versions of Cadash and the Crash pinball games. Don't dump TOO much money into HUcards though, just the initial handful then if you're into it get the very good Super SD System 3 that will let you play the entire library including all the CD games with all the various arcade card requirements. One thing about PCE is that it had a VERY long life span all the way from the mid 80s to the mid 90s so you can get a taste of how a console successfully (in Japan) expanded its capabilities over a very evolutionary time in retro gaming.

Strangely enough I have a TG16 controller but no console. Found it at a thrift store. Pretty interesting considering how poorly it sold over here.

I have a Duo-R and a Briefcase unit with the white PC-Engine in it. And although I had to make my own power supply for the Briefcase; that has worked better for me than the Duo-R. The Duo-R won't read CD's. I bought a NOS HoP-M3 and it didn't change a thing. The only way I can make it read anything is to have it torn apart and have the laser pulled all the way to the edge of the disc so that by the time it gets to the center the CD is spinning fast enough that it trys to read it. I can get an audio CD to start but it sounded wobbly and skippy. Yea, real technical words but that's the best I can describe it. Might try another NOS laser but I'm skeptical.

If you want to play on an original PC Engine, buy the base unit and the ODE by Terraonion. They just put out new stock on black Friday. I don't recommend getting a CD add-on like me. Only the Super CD Rom units have the expanded RAM for the CD and Super CD games. You still need an Arcade Card if you want to play those games, of which there's only a handful. I had to switch out one of the drive gears and eventually I'll have to replace all the capacitors.

I'm having a ton of fun with the Ys series and Sapphire. Rondo of Blood is one of the best Castlevania games I've played. There's also a lot of eroge for all the coomers out there.

I think the SuperGrafx with Super CD-ROM^2 and Arcade card would give you best compatibility. It is like any other PC-Engine with the SD-System^3. Best looking I would say is the original white PC-Engine in the briefcase form.
