DK vs DK2?

I'm split as hell. DK2 really improved on the first in many, many areas but it has some crippling issues that makes it frustrating as sevel hells to play at times, such as the craptastic AI which can't find the lair, while in the lair, and eventually leaves the dungeon because he couldn't find a lair, through the portal, located in the middle of the lair. Combat was also a lot worse since any fights featuring more than ~10 units is just an endless loop of units getting stuck on eachother, switching targets before attacking and randomly leaving the battlefield while at full health. It's also a lot slower than DK (about twice as slow really), which I find to be a huge minus, but that's a matter of personal taste

On the other hand, it improves in nearly every single other area, from the unit training system to creature desires, digging, room balance, the workshop etc.

What do you think?

DK2 is buggy as all fuck. Even the GoG version lags and crashes constantly.

I'd give you a real comparison if I could get DK2 working.

Dungeon Keeper 2, but mostly because I never played the first Dungeon Keeper.

I still have DK2 in dem big old PC boxes

Odd.

I run the GoG version on W7, can't remember if I've ever crashed

I run the actual old CD version on Windows 8 and it works flawlessly.

>> No.605138

They're both of the same level for me. DK2 is obviously more polished and easier to look at, but DK1 has a certain charm to it, not sure what it is.
I guess a combination of less cartoony graphics, and slightly more intresting rooms and creatures. Haven't played DK1 in a long time so can't compare many things. The ability to recruit horny as a somewhat permanent creature is also a big plus, even if he's batshit crazy.

I fucking loved DK1 horny.

The way you had to either work your ass off keeping him happy, or just create a separate mini dungeon for him, quarantined far away from your heart, only ever releasing the beast when shit is about to really go down while praying that he doesn't decide that raping your own guys is more fun than the enemy

Shit was cool, he was a walking nuclear bomb that could blow up in your face if he felt like it

>> No.605242

I tend to prefer DK1.

DK2 is objectively better -- a lot more balanced and challenging. However it's -- as you said -- much slower. Another huge minus is the lack of some cool creatures that were replaced by some really generic crap. I mean, where are the bipedal librarian dragons? Where are the beetles, spiders? Tentacles? Instead -- what? A fucking dark elf and rogue? That's some severe bullshit. A lot of the appeal of DK is in raising these quirky, unusual things, nobody wants a fucking "rogue".

The atmosphere is great in both games, but DK2 is just a bit more generic and that steps on my particular toes.

>> No.606178

The torture chamber is amazingly overpowred and breaks both games. The more you are attacked, the stronger you get. It's silly.

I've had some problems with colors and crashing on win7, but nothing too serious.

>> No.607013

DK1 deeper dungeons doesn't work on Win7 for some reason. Shame, some of them were seriously sweet.

>> No.607016

I played DK so fucking much as a kid and was super psyched when I saw the promo art for DK 2 in a shop while on holiday in France. After I bought it and played the tutorial I was super bummed and disappointed. Casinos? Fucking goblins? A weird orange dungeon heart thing? Fuck off. Fuck right off. Go to hell DK2 you piece of fucking shit, I hope you scream in pain forever in a torture room while a mistress whips your balls with a rusty razor whip.

Your creatures need a bigger lair.

Try it in HD, DK 2 was by and far the uglier of two.

That said, I thought it lost a lot of charm in the second iteration.

Although this isn't retro: There's a spirtual successor with https://wftogame.com/ and http://www.maiagame.com/

>> No.607082

Did anyone else really enjoy My Pet Dungeon in DK2? I kind of wish it had more levels to play but it was still a cool sandbox mode.

>>605029
I can only get DK2 running stable if I turn off every feature in video settings and run at 640x480. This is with the GoG release as well.

Ha.

How's this for a spiritual successor?

DK2 was the very definition of fun.

I love it so much.

Yet I haven't been able to get it working on my PC for ages now and this thread made me sad again...

I liked it more than whatever the fuck DK 1's heart was meant to be.

At least he wasn't a ponderous moron like the one in DK2. But the DK1 one isn't exactly hard to keep happy: Stick him in the Temple or toss gold at him every so often, and don't slap him or hold him for too long.

This guy so hard.

The last one was my favourite. Cozy with lots of room, hidden creatures and boxes and heroes whenever you wanted them.

Recently discovered the map editor, made the map twice as big.

>> No.611306

My biggest problem with DK2 was the landing animations for creatures. No more quick drops, just watching Salamanders take 30 years to get up after being dropped.

Fuck it still pisses me off.

>> No.611403

>>607352

Yeah, I just skimmed through the post. I'd feel stupid now if I wasn't so arrogant. So instead, let's forget this ever happened.

>>611306

This. Dropping ten maxed out Bile Demons and just watching them let it rip in a narrow corridor. But really, everyone has to admit that DK2's approach was an improvement in terms of challenge. Now you have to rely on traps more and time your creature drops instead of just stomping everything to death until credits.

>> No.611478

>>611403
For competitive play I'm sure it was better but I had fun with the old ways.

Custom campaigns like the ones in the DKFX pack certainly allowed for a challenge, even if you spammed throwing and grabbing your creatures a lot.

>> No.612069

>>607082
I couldn't be arsed with the campaign and quite frankly the whole RTS element of DK2 was boring to me.

But making dungeons was incredibly fun.

I thought Dungeon Keeper 2 raped the series.

I really liked DK1.

>> No.615954

I liked when it was late at night and the game would yell at you and tell you to go to bed.

>> No.617000

>It is the witching hour, curses are half-price!

Also, wasn't it a nice touch when games did that?

I remember original Stronghold would tell you every 1 hour or so "Perhaps its time for a snack milord?", then something else in 2 and if you played 3-4 hours it'd tell you outright to get off the PC.

>> No.617056

the combat in dk2 is so slow and clunky you can single-handedly defeat entire armies by possessing your strongest minion

you just backpedal while hitting enemies and there's basically no chance of them catching up to you because their attack animations are like one hour long

>> No.617096

>>617056
I thought it was more that you can attack from (a LOT) further away than enemies will try to attack you. But also that if an enemy does wind up an attack you can't avoid it. I should dig this game out again it was neat.

Is the mouse control fixed in this? I tried a version a while ago and just couldn't get it to a playable standard because of the mouse.

i have replayed DK1 over 35 times but only DK2 a few times (mostly due to compatibility issues with newer versions of windows while dk1 still worked)

i favor dk1 mostly due to the visual appeal and the simple resource system even if you can royally screw yourself over with spell spamming.

Works fine for me.
