Bullshit. The cheapest table from Ikea (around 9$ where I live and its made of cardboard) can take around a ton of constant, vertical force. This one has wooden legs - it can probably take more than that and it will never collapse under a fucking tv. Damn, my poor friend kept his huge crt on a fucking chair for years and it did not break. Learn physics and how to apply force to break things (protip: for tables it is not directly from the top, it's rather the strongest place of a table).

It's just crowded. My goal is to fit in as much stuff as possible. Everything is carefully placed wherever it will snugly fit.
Everything is hooked up. The only thing that doesn't "live" there is the Dreamcast, which is usually plugged into a modern wall mounted TV in another room along with a PS2 and some black plastic.

I agree there is a symmetry problem (the stuff piled on the right is creeping too high), and a structural problem with the sagging improvised "shelf" in the middle, but it would be prohibitively annoying to change now. It used to make me a little anxious too, but it has proven stable over a long time.
I use the table as a workbench too, so both corners are usually covered with some mess of a "project." The Saturn is there now because I'm currently tuning it. I just set the top case back on for the picture. All the controllers are usually stored in the drawers or bins.

I know how you feel man, I used to look at these threads back in 2013 and think "yeah, one day I'll have something like this" and here I am six years later in the same shitty situation I was before with the only consoles currently up are modern ones due to having no space for anything due a lot of space being taken up by things in the past six years.

All I do is emulate older games, with everything else in storage or tucked away. Don't even have a CRT anymore, but I wish I took a picture of my comfy little battlestation I did have back in 2014 that I thought was pretty shitty but looking back I miss it a lot. It was a crappy VHS combo TV that was on a futon that had a Dreamcast, Mega Drive and PS2 in front of it. Finished Skies of Arcadia on that thing so it had a lot of use.

I guess I sidetracked a bit, anyhow nice games man. MSR is really good.

Fat PS2s are constantly breaking and it good to have a backup. Out of shot is like 3 slims. Plus if you believe randos on the internet PS2 emulation of a ps1 is inaccurate as it copied the very early ps1s with 5 bit texture modulating instead of the later ones with the full 8 bit after they switched from vram to sgram. So supposedly the output from a later ps1 should be sharper.

I auditioned these against B&W Diamond 800s and Focal Sopra No 2 and the Golden Ear Tritons 1 (which is basically Deftech on steroids). All lack the magic of the electrostat. But admittedly, the placement is picky. .

Dynamic drivers are better; an estat can never, ever hope to recreate certain instrument sounds with convincing authority and impact such as percussion, in the same way a large woofer can. Ps. Modern Martin Logan estats have very very little to do with vintage stax. The closet thing are the Stax ESL speaker line from the 80s. Because of the curved baffle of the modern estat designs you have issues with directivity, beaming and getting a good sounding soundstage without having to sit completely still. Forget about a second person trying to enjoy music with you with modern Martin Logan designs. Even Quad uses the same curved estat panel now. No idea why. Must have something to do with cost/complexity.

Anywho this has nothing to do with retro so I’ll shut up now. Just kind of salty this nigga flexing his shitty Martin Logan’s and comparing them to Stax.

You seem into audio, so I think you should do reading on current Martin Logan designs. These speakers have dual 10" dynamic drivers each (probably crossed over to 200hz), so they won't, technically, lack any dynamics in the bass region. As far as soundstaging, they have built in Anthem room correction DSP.

>his shitty Martin Logans
Sounds like you think I'm "sunk costing." I own a variety of Stax. And I was dead set on the KEF Reference 3s, since I enjoyed their LS50s at the desktop. But I gave the MLs a listen and they wiped the floor with the Kefs and the B&Ws (most overrated speaker company of all time). Listening to them was like listening to Stax headphones but instead of all the sound in my head (all headphones image small relatively speaking, but Stax image really small compared to open backs), it filled the room with that airy and detailed electrostat sound.

Plus, playing an RPG late at night while nestled into a beanbag seems comfy as fuck. Unfortunately, beanbags seem stupidly expensive. The good ones, anyway. I could blow $50 and get a shitty department store one that goes flat after 2 months, but all the nice ones are like $300+, and I can't justify spending that kind of money on formless recycled foam in a giant sack.

It's kind of a shame that audio has become a meme now and we'll never be able to actually discuss it here. I've always been into good sound and was hoping it would be more of a topic in this thread, but audiocuck's shitposting has just spurned backlash from people who are mocking him by being hyperbolically obnoxious and elitist about it.

My argument has always been that good sound is cheap as fuck. The backlash is people falseflagging that you need multi-thousand dollar tube amps and shit to listen to your video games, but the only thing I ever solicited was that people should just look into a cheap receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers from goodwill. If all you've ever played on are built-in TV speakers, even that small of an investment would improve your soundstage, 100%.

With the right console revisions (sharper image by default) and with a lot of trial/error adjusting picture/brightness/sharpness/etc you'd be surprised at how good composite can be. This. I have a PVM and use RGB because I can and I'm a faggot for maximum video quality, but composite isn't bad at all. Hell, I played most of my games on RF when I was young because that's just how we hooked it up, but I fucking lost my shit when I found out my TV also had a composite input and decided to use that instead, it felt like such a huge upgrade.

People should play using whatever they want. It's when autists start screeching that one is objectively "the right way to play" that I start getting riled. The worst are the ones that claim s-video is "all you need" or "identical to RGB", because then you know they're just trying to cope because they couldn't get a hold of anything better.

You don't HAVE to, though. Just be mindful of weight limits and use your own judgement when looking at how the supports are positioned, since most stands can hold more than they're rated for. I've had this setup on this stand (bottom pic) for well over a year, and despite being slightly over the weight limit, there isn't any bowing at all, but I also added the riser for the monitor so the weight is positioned directly over the supports for the shelf below. I often play with my feet up on the stand as well, and it has held up admirably. It's not from Ikea, but it's the same kinda particle board deal. The drawer units to the left and right ARE Ikea, but they're only holding the speakers, so whatevs. And before this, my setup (minus the heavy amp, VCR, and equalizer) was on a legit $40 Ikea shelf that held it just fine, too. Yeah, so that lower row of yellow/red/white terminals marked "input 1" is for composite video. The screw-on connector to the right that says "cable/antenna" is RF. Composite is definitely better, because it splits the video signal from the audio signal, while RF has them all together in one cable. Very cool, never knew this TV had that, my younger self would have appreciated the knowledge.
>sound is excellent too
This I remember, and it's probably why my mom bought it. When she finally replaced it with a flatscreen in like 2008, I remember she was really disappointed with how tinny and shallow everything sounded by comparison.

5th and 6th gen, 3D stuff esp looks really good via component/rgb but then you have these games that benefit from a bigger canvas being played on tiny screens if youre memeing so idk

At the end of the day, if you were lucky enough to get a pvm, 20 inches or better in good shape for under 100 dollars, more power to you

But anyone paying upwards of 100 for any CRT is a fool, and paying 500+ for a speakerless 15khz screenlet (that's really sharp!) deserves to be mocked at every turn if they try to flex

Especially since, if you stop to think about it, it makes more sense for s-video to look passable for 3D, but be noticeably fuzzier for 2D, which has more static, high-contrast imagery. Seriously, most of the "facts" on this board are just bullshit that people made up to feel better about whatever CRT they happen to own. Just fucking play games and get on with your life.

Eh. I got my PVM for free, but after having it for 6 or 7 years and playing a ton of games on it, I'd say I gladly would have paid $100. Maybe even 200, but any more than that is a bit much, I'd probably just settle for s-video or component, now that people are finally making good RGB-to-component transcoders.

The culture of this board is to be a sarcastic asshole to one another and to insult other posters for trivial reasons.

My guess at why this occurs is because psychologically, a bunch of grown men collecting and playing retro video games is seen as a nerdy/lame hobby, and people feel insecure about it, so in order to prove they're not a loser they try to make OTHER people look like losers.

"I'm a cool guy who collects retro video games and says sarcastic comments on the Internet. *YOU'RE* the loser!"

My two cents.

Maybe. But your argument doesn't really account for the fact that this board was pretty cool for the first year or so. There was tons of genuine discussion from people who wanted to talk about old video games away from the cesspool of /v/. I'd say the anger is more because this board has turned to too much /v/-tier shitposting, so anons who might have been kind just don't give a fuck anymore and decide to vent by lashing out at people are who ask stupid questions either sincerely or as a form of baiting. Every fucking day if you check the catalogue, there's no shortage of shameless bait threads floating around, and any attempt at a good thread is almost immediately met with shitposting. I'm pretty angry over it, I know that. This place used to be cool.

Pretty much every board has gotten worse since 2016 and the influx of retarded phoneposters, though.

Do not get that “r amp”. Letter designators on these small amps are for the type of chip used. I’ve never heard of r amps, good chance it’s turrible. My recommendation is a T-Amp but make sure it uses a “TA2020” chip. Don’t fall for the knock offs such as TI2020. The TA2020 is a legendary audio chip originally made by Tripath. You can find similar cheap bare bones amps on eBay with a TA2020 that look similar to your pic.

FLASH CART IS NOT EMULATION

>> No.6079447

>>6079442
Am I missing something here but why is using a flash cart considered emulation? Is it referring to the fact the rom is downloaded and not the actual romchip soldered into a real cart? Because that seems more like a difference of opinion on philosophy on how to approach the most authentic experience, as opposed to actual hardware definitions of wether something is emulated or not.

there is nothing to "emulate" when it comes to 1's and 0's (or in this case hex). a number is a number is a number, no matter what reads it. it is what is done with that number that counts. acting like a fucking copy of a book is emulating the book, fuckin retard, it is the book
