Awesome music, interesting story, and good graphics(except for the screenwrapping glitchy stuff)
Terrible hit boxes and awkward jumping/wall jumping make it annoying as hell.

because the actual mana games were accidental greateness. A battle system that shouldn't be fun but somehow is. Crazy soundtracks that somehow are eclecitc AND fun.

Much like Lunar. A couple great games and then a bunch of shit games that make you question whether or not the devs are actually retarded.

Knuckles Chaotix - Beautiful game with nice ideas, but terrible execution.
Terranigma - Ambitious story, boring gameplay.
Shadow of the Beast - Awful game with great atmosphere and art style.

Its my favorite jrpg evr for the gameplay specifically ! You have 3 mode of combats, you discover or "create" your skills by yourself...and the music is just unique

Faxanadu for NES. Love the art style and the concept of it but the dungeon design was bad, there were a lot of unavoidable hits, control was stiff, and having to backtrack to buy keys was dumb.

Though I was one of very few who found the game remarkably boring, which is funny since it succeeds Illusion and Illusion is vastly more engaging and enthralling to me.
Terranigma is one of those games I admire but from a distance. Cool ideas, cool executions around those ideas, but the gameplay of 'you're Ark always and you JUST USE SPEARS' is fucking... c'mon.

Or maybe I didn't get far enough?

Have you actually played LOM? It's a beautiful game with great presentation but horribly flawed.

The only difficulty comes from confusion, getting though maps is piss easy but you spend a lot of time running in circles trying to figure out where to go and having to engage in so much tedious and repetitive combat it sucks all the fun out of it. Also weapon infusion is (and I say this with complete sincerity) the single most autistic mechanism ever included in any game, ever. It's like they were trying to win a contest to come up with the most unintuitive and opaque system possible.

Every so often I have to replay this game just to remind myself it's really not very good because the screenshots make it look epic.

In fact they don’t give a shit about that serie, they could have progressed really better but they consider those Mana games as secondary, so they are using that IP to make ton of shitty gameplay test to watch how players react.

Same things can be said for Valkyrie Profile, they have released shit episode on DS and now they are wasting it in mobile cash grab games with no soul.

The only thing that protected Chrono’s serie is probably because they are thinking people only liked CT because of Toriyama (Chrono Cross probably did less sales) and that guy probably doesn’t wanna create characters, or he does but he is asking too much money and why square-enix would do that when asking the same thing for Dragon Quest will generate really more profits?

I do think the same and also the idea to have different stories in one game isn’t a good idea in my opinion. I mean the player doesn’t feels concerned.
Also fight are blank as fuck, spamming your weapon doesn’t make fights interesting, also why do we have to chose a weapon at the beginning, why make the craft system so obscure? The same could be said about the magic system and the creature to raise. Why make the possibility to import another character in the party. Why the player is forced to do any fight and cannot change of screen if foes are still alive? That game was strange seriously.

Hi James

The game play is the least interesting thing about many point-and-click adventure games. It's all about story, character, art and music. Wouldn't be a bad concept to deconstruct actually.

An adventure game with horrible puzzles that have zero logic but the aesthetic and writing is incredible.

Opposite for me. Music is too estoric and the water colors are too mute with the story constantly getting in the way of playing the game.

Chrono Trigger combat is actually moderately fun (probably why normies keep saying it's the best jrpg), dramatically helped by combo moves and no random encounters.
I remember the first time I fought that bridge dragon tank boss when busting Crono out of jail, I was hyped out of my mind.

The puzzles tell the story in an interactive manner.

I don't give a fuck about being told "And then detective figured out where the killer was because he was really smart."

Instead, give me "okay so in this puzzle you are given all the letters from the serial killer, so you have to find which word is repeating in all of them. Then you have to look at the map and find that word as a name of an old building that happens to be right in the middle between all the crime scenes. But the creator won't just spoonfeed to you, you have to work for it. Want a detective story? Be a detective."

Played the The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes games? The have some good detective-work puzzles. They're still bad games though, because you inevitably end up trying tonally inconsistent stupid things because the game can't actually model reality. The only genre that adventure games are naturally suited to is slapstick comedy (and that's why Day of the Tentacle is the best adventure game).

>hey're still bad games though, because you inevitably end up trying tonally inconsistent stupid things because the game can't actually model reality.
It's been a long time since I played those, but I can't ever remember trying "tonally inconsistent things" because the game can't model reality. You look around, you make observations, and most of the solutions are pretty reasonable, once you've figured out what you need to do. I especially really liked how in the Rose Tattoo one, looking at and interacting with the same stuff as Watson yields different actions and observations than interacting with the same stuff as Holmes.
