Majoras Mask's mechanics are cumbersome, but the final product justifies those mechanics so it's still a good piece of art, if not a good "game".

I agree the clock shit was annoying. I don't know that I'd call the "overall narrative" of the game "perfect." I like the idea of having a weird Zelda game where everyone a couple days away from dying constantly and it's also an unreal nightmare world Link slips into after falling and either dying or just hitting his head badly. But the villain wasn't all that interesting and his agenda was just "I'm inexplicably angry so I'm going to kill everyone."
I was a lot more into the story with Ocarina of Time. Really high quality modern visuals weren't a thing at the time so you have to keep that in mind when I tell you how impressed I was with the whole cinematic experience after buying and playing that game when it came out. The Navi scene at the beginning was actually super-exciting even though now when a zoomer looks at it they probably think it's cheesy and lame. I was emotionally invested in Saria and the Great Deku Tree and all of it from the very beginning. And I really felt like I was in this fantasy forest world because it was more realistic and had more depth to it than any other game I had experienced before then.
Ganondorf and the three Goddesses / triforce lore and cut scenes were compelling to me too. I was always excited to see where things were going every step of the way and finally getting to confront him at the end in that cool gigantic malevolent as fuck castle where he's just playing a pipe organ and Zelda's trapped in that pink diamond looking thing was much more of a payoff than anything I got out of Majora's Mask. MM just seemed like a letdown to me after OoT.

Fair enough. I thought it was an annoyance. I like being able to just relax and explore in an adventure game.

Sidequests are great
Main temples are kinda meh
never had issues with the time limits or such, and his complains about the N64 graphics and controller are stupid.

His final sentiment is fair, and I think it aligns well with people's true perceptions of the game. I mean people really only talk about the ambiance, story, and characters when they sing its praises, right...? In terms of gameplay it really isn't that amazing, though I don't remember having quite as much trouble as he did.

The clock system is the entire crux of what makes the game interesting, though. The entire game world changes and progresses, with or without you, as the days pass. Every NPC has their own life they carry out. Side quests progress with the passing of time. Without the time loop, that wouldn't be possible, or, at least, you'd have to completely restart the game just to start a new cycle.

I agree and not. I think the game would be much more fun if the time limit wasn't so tight, without a walkthrough some parts of the game can become a game of trial-and-error and it also discourages exploration of the world since you're always on a somewhat tight time limit.

Granted that might be that I like to take my time when playing a game for the first time so the time-limit really rubbed me the wrong way.

I posted this in another thread earlier today on /v/ but it’s still relevant.

Majoras mask was extremely derisive upon release and has always had two camps of people, one who thinks it’s simply a quick rehash of the first game, and the latter camp who can appreciate the game for what it’s accomplishes. I played through Majoras Mask when I was 9 years old, pretty much the last year of my life where I had that sense of awe and wonder that seeing new sights and sounds could impress upon you before you started to wise up and grow up.

If you grew up outside of the console war areas, aka you were born past 1999, and/or you were already past the age of 10, it’s highly likely you disregard(ed) Majoras Mask.

As for WHY I love Majoras Mask so much, and why it’s my favourite game of all tine, well, having the rose tinted goggles on at all times and viewing the game at the last time of my life I was really happy certainly helps, but I think the way the story is told, the intimate conversations you can have with the townsfolk of their impending doom and the moody atmosphere just propels it to a game of significant importance for me. Muh atmosphere and muh storytelling yeah it’s the same old argument but if you don’t “get it” you probably never will.

I do respect anyone’s opinion that it’s not a good game. Over the years I’ve come to realize that no matter how well implemented and innovative the time travel/save system was done, it’s just hard to get used to and sticks out like a sore thumb in context of the rest of the Zelda series. It feels off. You can’t deny that it was really clever how they implemented and it’d a miracle that the game is as good as it is despite the rushed development period of it.

I play and beat this game every single year and I’m 29 now so I’ve probably played and beat Majoras Mask about 40 times now.

Also, I don’t need to watch the AVGN video to know he has nothing new or original to talk about the game. He should have taken a serious and genuine approach to the game as James Rolfe. It’s weird how he’s been doing videos on good games instead of bad ones. Also goes without saying all of his new videos are incredibly cringe and forced and have no natural flow to the script. I highly suspect the older episodes worked so well because Mike had a huge hand in the scripts.

I’m not even sure when the last time he did a genuine review or retrospective video, the ones I’m most familiar with are his turtle movie reviews and his horror movie reviews which are quite good and intelligent. You’d think with all the cinematic scenes and the (kind of?) a horror vibe from the game he’d have taken the game seriously instead of subjecting it to another really inane nerd video. I did skim through some of it and it was just as cringe at times as his last few videos. The man is completely used up and washed up and he’s not funny or amusing anymore.

I kind of get that, but it's also that kind of attitude that makes game series stagnate, because whenever they try to introduce something new or interesting gameplya-wise it gets shot down.

In Majora's Mask specifically the time system works. It's supposed to give you a feeling of steadily building dread. By adding something relatively simple as a 3-day limit, you feel more connected to the world and, more importantly, what threatens it. Most Zelda games don't really feel like there's a world-threatening problem that has to be solved, and Majora's Mask does.

It has its downsides, particularly late in the game when you're trying to do sidequests and have to get to specific parts of the timeline, and the time manipulation songs still make the process feel like a hassle, but all in all the final product is worth it, as it's one of few 3D Zelda games that's both good and doesn't feel like 'a previous game, but more of it', like eg Twilight Princess.
