What controller do you guys use for /vr/ gaming?

I made the terrible mistake of buying an 8bitdo SF30, and it makes me want to drive sticks into my eyes. It's *almost* a great controller, but I greatly underestimated how bad the d-pad diagonal issue was going to be--the fixes out there only marginally help.

I've heard good things about the Hori Pokken Tournament controller, but I'd like to hear some other recommendations.

I bought an 8bitdo and I like it. It's good for Platformers and basic sidescrollers RPG'S etc. It feels retro but I do agree the diagonals are not the best for other games.

best is to get an original controller and an adapter if you can. otherwise i find ps2 controllers to be pretty good, ps3 is still ok but i don't like the triggers as much. most reproduction controllers have issues and don't seem worth it.

I got the sn30pro and it works fine. Haven't had the diagonal issue, probably because I have the game boy one instead of the original, but I did wear the dpad down to complete shit after a year. Replaced the rubbers and put a couple donut stickers on for good measure and it's good for another couple years. Only truly bad thing for me is the thin shoulder buttons, they're not as unusable as they look and you won't even notice it most of the time. Problem is when you need to use all four shoulder buttons you notice it far too well.
Pokken controller has very good quality buttons but it's got a weird holding angle because of the handles going straight down and the shoulders are actually too big to be used well enough. They also have these big open gaps underneath that just lets dust, dirt, lint, and anything else seep into the internals. Funny enough, the dpad on it actually tends to have the same diagonal issues that 8bitdo controllers are known for having.

>> No.6065026

>>6064945
I do have a DS3 I'm thinking of using. The buttons all feel like cheap, mushy shit, but at least the d-pad inputs are dead-on. I've heard DS4s feel a lot better.

>>6064981
>Funny enough, the dpad on it actually tends to have the same diagonal issues that 8bitdo controllers are known for having.
For fuck's sake, why is it so hard to find a modern controller with a decent d-pad? Switch Pro controllers are also notorious for this shit.

I mean, I have heard here and there that the modern 8bitdos controllers have rectified the issue, but I'm still a little skeptical to go with them, especially since I let a lot of people convince me that the diagonal problem on the older models wasn't that bad in the first place. I did the paper donut fix on mine, but even with that, if you aren't really square on with your press, you're almost certainly going to register an up or down input. I'm guessing a lot of people just happen to play games where misfired diagonals aren't a problem. It's such a shame, because the controller feels great otherwise.

Anyway, thanks for the input on the Pokken controller.

I started using the Hori Pokken controller on the Switch for games where analog isn't required and, although I love the Switch Pro controller, the d-pad is awful. Just try playing Tetris or, hell, using the system's input test, and you'll see how many false and/or missed inputs with the Switch Pro. The Hori controller, on the other hand, registers every d-pad input perfectly every time and is comfy.

Started using it for emulating games and it's ideal. Highly highly recommended if you are attempting to play 2D/retro games and can use a USB input

>> No.6077783

>>6077694
>You're buying things you don't need.
And what if somebody doesn't need or want a controller with analog sticks?

I understand where you're coming from, but all I'm saying is that most people probably already own a controller with analog sticks, so it's not a huge stretch to buy a controller that lacks them for a certain subset of games. For instance, most people already own a 360 controller for general usage, but it has a really shitty d-pad, so they might be inclined to buy something specifically for games that make heavy use of the d-pad, just like fighting game enthusiasts might be inclined to purchase an arcade stick specifically for their niche use.

While yes, you -could- get a controller that has a good d-pad AND analog sticks, and all the other gubbins, if you already have a controller with analog sticks, what's the point? There are some minor reasons you might not want to, such as extra cost and/or clutter for a feature you don't need, limiting your overall selection of controllers, or desiring a form factor of controller where analog sticks just don't fit very well (for instance, if you want a SNES controller, 8bitdo has offerings with analog sticks, but some people complain they're uncomfortable to use without grips, but once you add grips, the controller ceases to have a true SNES form factor).

Of course, yes, if you're going to buy one general purpose controller for absolutely everything, it should absolutely have analog sticks. But I don't think anybody is really going to argue with you on that point.
