For all our new friends here: this is Shadow of the Beast on Amiga and IMO Ecco the Dolphin and Kolibri (on 32X) have a pretty similar aesthetic.

>> No.6059563

>>6059472

Yeah there we go, "utopianism". Shadow of the Beast is more dystopian. I mean it has a great style! It's just not at all a New Age style I think. It's not primarily about glorifying nature or about spiritual oneness; it's more about wistfully escaping into a world that is free of people and burstingly rich with possibilities for asocial exploration. The "stunning vistas" part certainly matches, but in this kind of setting, the appeal of those isn't that they represent natural harmony or whatever; it's that they might be full of awesome alien stuff. This is a socially awkward nerd's fantasy world, not a reiki healer's sales tool. We want kickass adventure, but without any scary strangers around.

Horrible monsters need to be there though, because they aren't scary; they're just cool and interesting. Cities are okay, but they need to be ancient and ruined. Civilized people are okay as long as they're very rare, very strange, and very mechanically simple to interact with. Suggestions of high-tech civilization are good but they need to be far-off, either in time or in space (such as relics from an ancient, pre-Collapse culture or a giant blimp in the clouds that you know you'll never get close to). All that crazy alien landscape to explore with nothing around that might make you uncomfortable - it's candy to an imaginative, awkward kid.

Oh well I was saying that "New Age" was some OTHER thing from what I was talking about there, meaning the feeling I get from the style of Shadow of the Beast is not New Age. I don't know what the proper name for the Shadow of the Beast style is though.

I don't know, there are lots of feelings and styles. I'm not a popular arts historian. But yeah that sky and mountain (in the Spyro shot) evoke some of that expansive, lonesome, alien feeling. It looks like stuff is far away, and pretty, and at least faintly unearthly. And like there's probably a lot of it.

I used to get that kind of feeling from the novel Ringworld too. Or potentially any story featuring settings in which there are numerous doors to other worlds... Special Deliverance by Clifford Simak, the Castle Perilous series by John DeChancie (though those were partly comedic), probably The High House by James Stoddard if it had existed then, potentially Planescape: Torment but not really because you hardly get to actually GO into any of the doors in that game... that kind of stuff is exploration porn to me.

>>6059675

Aw yeah that'll do it. Haha look how distinctive that style is, it's got to have a name.

I mean I have no idea whether OP actually meant to specify just this one specific style, or what. I'm not even gonna read all the thread at this point because it got bickery apparently. I just like babbling about my own tastes.

I think you will like Roger Dean's fantasy art. Many games published by Psygnosis (SotB, Ork, Agony, etc.) are inspired by his paintings of strange and lonely landscapes. He even used to do graphic design works for them.

I know this may be a stretch, but Extase feels New Age to me because it's about building and exploring a mysterious consciousness, and everything you do creates music that reacts to your actions and deepens the more the Al's consciousness grows.

I've always wanted to play it, but I haven't gotten around to setting up an Amiga emulator to try it.

Roger Dean was a huge inspiration for Shadow of the Beast. In fact, he designed a lot of covers for Psygnosis' games, and even their logo.

The game (like many from that era) was probably inspired too by 70s and 80s surreal and fantastic sci-art. Browse through this tumblr and you'll see plenty of examples:
