The game was originally made with one-hit kills just like every other Contra. Japan couldn't handle the game and added a life meter when their version came out a month after America's.

That's not saying much, which is why other Contra games had longer stages. HC's boss gameplay is just standing and shooting, dodging one attack, and then continuing to stand in place and shoot. Snoozefest.

There's no way you're serious. They're 10-30 second long (often literal) flat planes with 1 enemy type, worthless filler. Game's still got a long autoscroller in all the routes despite this to make it extra shitty!

No, good games had difficulty curves designed around their health mechanics. Contra functions like a Gradius game: with upgrades you get incredibly strong--so much so that you can quickly kill bosses, while most enemies die in one hit--and yet there's always great suspense because taking just one hit will end your streak. It's a great way to have overpowered characters without losing any suspense--the thing that made Gradius and Contra so empowering yet exhilarating to play.
