This game is now 25 years old, can we finally say how it was never good outside of it's pre-rendered graphics?

Even replayed it to double check and the variety of enemies, lackluster bosses, placement of collectables, and overall level design is shit.

i'll give you that, there were some really shitty levels, with ones taking multiple tries to beat. but even the best platformers have some bad moments. the bosses were fine, nothing too crazy, but they did they job. dkc2 has more interesting fights though. however, to say the game was never good, is false. the characters, the atmosphere, the controls help add to the world-building and really make this game what it is.

That's the detail.
Nobody from Rare ever hinted that Miyamoto ever said anything remotely close to that, and Miyamoto himself denied the rumor.
It was just a made up novelization thing, Kent probably heard that Yoshi's Island initially was planned to have prerendered graphics and then changed to standard 2D, and decided to write a small fiction blurb between Stamper and Miyamoto to add some spice to his book, but it never happened.

DKC has great gameplay/design and great graphics.
They look bad if you stretch the resolution, though. Must be played on an SD screen.
As for the gameplay, yeah. Rare managed to do one of the best, if not the best, western platfromers.
The controls are exceptionally smooth and responsive, and the level design is linear and tight, something unusual for western platformers that were mostly "where the fuck do I go" types.

Compare DKC to any of the earlier Mario games. DKC has a great flow to it, feels much faster and controls feel way better. Mario controls feel like you are always in some ice level and there is none of the flow. Plus, DKC music is great and among the best in SNES games.

>> No.6056875

As a 2D Mario fan for all my life, I can guarantee the DKC series took it's gameplay further. The sheer speed of the character goes perfectly with the awesome level design, you can slowly stroll through the stages finding things out or you can find shortcuts and ways to blast through series of enemies and obstacles to finish stages in a minute.
That with the awesome music and graphics makes it the real Mario successor. Git gud scrub.

It's not about DKC being "better" than Mario, that's highly debatable.
The success of DKC is that it's likely the best western-made platformer, ever.
Rare also did the best western fighting game, Killer Instinct. You may or may not like KI's aesthetics, or dial-a-combo mechanics, but you can't argue there's a better western fighting game, gameplay-wise.

And I dunno, RoS is pretty easy, and short. Both are very easy to me, but okay if thinking RoS is a bit harder makes you feel any better, be my guest. They're both good games regardless of that.

I don't have my death count for each game back when I was a kid and sucked at games, but I'm pretty sure I died more times on SMW. But fair, as I said, RoS is a much shorter game, so probably that's why.
SMW's easy for the most part, but the Special World stages are Lost Levels-tier, especially "Outrageous".
The only part in RoS that I think got me many death counts was the jump on the port level, but that's easily solved when you use the power to make long jumps.

Wrong again, but keep grasping, Mariotard. Not eveyone has to like your fat plumber's games that are clearly designed for little kids. If you still play them as an adult there's a high chance you're on disability welfare and still living with your parents.

Mario is a pretty fine series, at least the main games. I don't really think it's too kiddy, it's more universal type of cartoon, like Popeye.
Sonic is more kiddy (and I still like Sonic, at least the Genesis games).

dkc is a snappy feeling game with potential for fast movement that when you do achieve it, it feels nice. some of the gimmicks are poorly done, such as in snow barrel blast where the gimmick is it's hard to see where the barrel will shoot you out. the second game is also good, kind of more of the same of the first one but clearly a little better polished and less stupid shit like in dkc1. 3 isn't really worth playing.

The first two at least closely follow the typical rule of 3's design, nothing special there, most games did it, but it's interesting that nintendo didn't revisit it with mario 64. Mario 64 is clearly experimental in its design but they didn't figure out a way to apply a tried and true method of design, instead doing something more free form and "theme park" focused where you get a goal, have to travel to the area where you do it, and then platform or whatever to achieve it.

If anything, Crash Bandicoot applied the DKC style design to a 3D space better. Snappy momentum carrying movement, flowing levels with occasional secrets (DKC definitely had more but I think it's more a credit to being 2D than anything else), collecting shit along the ways - although the crate system is great. I wonder if Miyamoto would have rather made Crash when he saw how others were approaching 3D platforming.

1 not so much but 2 clearly embraced the kind of game it is. There are ways to gain speed in 1, and it's much like how you do it in DKC. Chaining bounce kills or box bounces.
