IDK, it would be nice to think of CRT's being made again but like, if it even were to happen in 10 years time, flat panel technology will have gotten even better by then. Even as things are today, I've read accounts of lots of people who ditched their CRT because with an OSSC and a higher end panel they were finally happy enough with the picture to move on. What will the demand be like when you can pick up an LG E9 or etc off craigslist for $100 and FPGA's come down in price to make a 4K-capable linedoubler affordable?

Now, what I can picture a lot easier is some kind of /vr/ oriented flat panel being made with built in OSSC like capabilities, maybe even shader capability, but even that's a stretch.

No, they all have this. It's because the glass is flat on the outside but not on the inside, so you have varying thickness of glass which creates a sort of lens effect. Even PC monitors have this to a degree but their deflection circuitry is a hell of a lot more advanced than a TV. I have an FV310 which people will tell you is "le best crt tv evar!!1" and it still has this issue. I mostly play 3D games on it though so it's never really noticeable.

If you want to get a curved CRT to avoid this then I would suggest looking for a JVC D-Series, Toshiba Cinema Series, a Toshiba with the model number A3X or A5X(X being a number denoting the year it was made, like 27A45 for 2005), or a 90s Trinitron with the barrel tube. All of those except the 90s Trinitrons have component, unless you find an XBR48 or XBR88 from Sony. Those aren't flat and do have component. It's also less noticeable on smaller sets like a 14AF4X or KV-13FS100.

I had a 20L5 for a while because I wanted it for playing 480p stuff, but in practice, it's a pretty inconvenient set to use if you're going to also be playing 240p stuff, since each resolution fucks up the geometry settings for the other one. And all those buttons on the sides of the screen work incredibly counterintuitive to how you think they would. It's best if you use it as a secondary monitor, only for 480p stuff, but then, at that point, you'd be better off hunting down a nice computer monitor.

I've got a weird problem. I have a PVM 1342Q, an older model without an OSD service menu. The display occasionally works as expected, but most of the time the picture is extremely dark, with only bright blue or red areas showing up clearly on the screen. Bright white, gray, and black all show up as black. Mixed colors like brown, purple, or yellow don't show up either. I connected it to a PC by s-video and adjusted the color saturation, brightness, and contrast sliders on the PC and found that adjusting saturation made the blue and red areas much brighter, but adjusting contrast and brightness made no visible change at all.

It's almost like it's only displaying a chroma signal and missing the luma part, except I get the exact same problem with a composite signal as well.
When it works, it's usually right after turning on, then after a few minutes the picture snaps back to this no-luma mode. I don't have any RGB tables to test those inputs, only composite and s-video.

I will post some (poor, sorry about that) images of the bizarre problem I'm having. This is what the SMPTE color bars from the 240p test suite look like. As you can see, anything with equal RGB values renders as black, and mixed colors become very dark the more similar their RGB values are.
It's almost as if the color being rendered is the difference between the intended color and the nearest shade of pure gray (i.e., subtract the whole luma part).

Now here's the color ramps from the 240p test suite. Shades of pure red, green, or blue seem to render just fine (though the greens are dim), but the grayscale ramp that is supposed to render below them doesn't show up at all. The yellow number line that is supposed to be printed across the top of the image is barely visible.

What could possible cause something like this? While I was doing these tests, the monitor flipped back to displaying colors properly for a few seconds. When it transitions from one to the other, I see horizontal bands of the image briefly flickering between the "dark" and "normal" modes. If I slap the side of the unit while this is happening I can briefly prolong the period of normal rendering. Sometimes mashing the input selection buttons in quick succession between live and dead inputs will also trigger it to switch.

It's looking.. not incredible, but not terrible. Has anyone had success using the service menu pincushion adjustments? Still don't have a remote, when I get one I think just dialling in vertical/horizontal size and doing whatever can be done to address the pincushioning/vertical bowing in the service menu should have me happy for good. Maybe get some convergence strips and see if the corners can get more locked in but I'm not seeing much reason to fuck around with the yoke, fortunately.

I honestly wonder if corner convergence is such a common issue on Wegas partially due to the tech, but also because they werent really totally concerned with how video games looked on it, particularly 2D ones where you're really gonna see these things. With proper aspect ratios for movies being a touted feature coming out of the VHS pan n scan era, who cares if the corners are a bit off so long as the center of the screen where people are actually looking is super sharp?

Also, it's really fun to watch old 4:3 TV dvds via component on this thing, and any NTSC 60i video. Underrated feature of having a decent crt

hey guys I could use a little help. I'm trying to determine the pinout of this zenith monitor's rgb port and I've found this 2A5/5A2 cable between the main module and the neckboard which shows it having the reg green blue signals, but my multimeter is only getting a reading from the leftmost pin, and it shows up on both pins 14 and 15 of the input.

My PVM 1342Q that was acting up yesterday seems to be working mostly fine now. I found that the surface it was on was slightly unlevel, and wedging something under one of the corners of the monitor seems to keep whatever the loose connection is a little tighter. Once the set has been on for several hours and is warm all over, the connection also seems more solid.

The geometry is noticeably distorted though. I learned how to calibrate the colors at least. A friend moved and gave this to me and I don't know very much about CRTs, as you can probably tell. Since this is an older model I understand I would probably have to crack it open and mess around with things attached to the picture tube to fix the distortion, which is probably beyond the realm of what I can realistically expect to do safely.

I took a DE-9 serial cable, cut off one end, and soldered it to the back of the EIAJ connector. My monitor is digital (RGBI) only, so I use it with my CGA PC. It could pretty easily be modified for analog RGB input as well if I wanted to, but I have other monitors for that.

So not directly /vr/ but crt related. What's the benefit of vcrs like pic related? They're pretty old so it looks like composite is the best they can do.

VHS tape bandwith is pretty low, which is why most don't even bother with s-video. Basically what this guy>>6055747 said. The difference you see on the screen is going to be more down to quality of the mastering of the tape and the quality of the equipment itself than the signal, and unless you're watching late '90s/early '00s tapes, typically the source is completely un-remastered from the original print, which once again, is going to completely negate any video quality boost you may have gotten from s-video. Later tapes, though, often got the same digital remastering as their DVD counterparts, so those can look pretty fantastic, even just through composite.

I picked up a Sony SLV-676UC about a year ago for 10 bucks. It's an editing VCR and has all kinds of fancy shuttle and audio controls, but I never really use them because I have no real reason. It's been one of the best VCRs I've ever owned, despite being almost 30 years old.

Laserdiscs have the same 'problem,' the signal encoded on the disc is composite and players only have s-video outputs if they have an advanced comb filter or something like that.

Flat CRT geometry issues typically are most visible on 2D horizontal scrolling games. Mine has a bit of a wave to it, but it's basically imperceptible when I'm playing most 3D stuff, so it depends what you're into

Sizing issues are totally fixable that way, I don't think unless you have a later HDCRT that there are any menu options for convergence, you'd have to get some magnetic strips and do your best. SD WEGAs often have an option that relates to pincushion distortion that may help

Well I'm not selling the JVC since it's way prettier, has more convenient s-video switching ports, and I'm pretty sure JVC is supposed to be the VHS brand since sony was wasting all their resources on betamax. Skies of Arcadia is kind of a bad example, though, because the textures in that game are gorgeous and the loss of clarity is quite noticeable for me. Besides, if you got your monitor for free like I did, then it isn't really that much effort to just use RGB when available.

If you want fidelity, use RGB. If you want nostalgia, use RF or composite. If you wish you could have RGB but you're too poor for an RGB monitor and too stupid to mod a consumer TV, cope with S-Video.

I use RGB for everything 16 bit and up, but I find NES and Master System games just look more appealing thought composite or even RF. Theres just a noticable increase in 'texture' from RF that works well with the limited sprite and pallete functionality of 8-bit games.

You can get one of the early PSXs with RCA jacks on the back and use composite video for sync. One thing is that the PSX doesn't have the capacitors on the RGB lines so you'd be DC-coupling your console and your monitor. I'd just use component on a PS2 to play PSx games.

IIRC the PS2 uses sync-on-green when outputting 480p and higher except when playing DVDs which always use YPbPr.

Thought this might be the place to ask. I have a 28" Zenith TV from 1998 that had been powered on and off nearly every day since then, up till a few months ago when it eventually ceased powering on. Prior to its failure, the picture on the TV would seem to flow upwards and then fill the screen whenever it was powered on, kind of like one of those old Powerpoint slide transitions. It'd also do that whenever any image with a bright, solid color would come on screen.
Any thoughts on what the failure could be? It had excellent picture and sound right up until it died. The nearest shop that does CRT repairs is over two hours away.

I picked this Hitachi up today I think it's 35" he gave me a degaussing coil too that I know very little about. I overheard him talking to his neighbor about the heavy TV he had that he was trying to get rid of. Very good timing

I discovered I have another PS2 multi-cable that has both composite and component outputs. I have verified that I get good composite video out from a Playstation through it. Obviously I can't test the RGB connections without a scope (don't have) or a sync solution so that something shows up on my PVM.

Plugging the composite video output from the PSX straight into the RGB sync input on the PVM didn't work. Now what, I guess I need to make a little filter with a capacitor or something? I might be able to pull that off...

Picked up a 20" JVC for free from a skinny melee player (you can tell by the smell). TV looks clean and works, so I take it home set it up in my bedroom. Play for 2 hours then go to sleep.

Next morning there are 8 bite marks under my ribs. I freak out thinking about a possible bed bug infestation. Look closely at my bed sheets and I find a tiny black dot moving. I grab it and it jumps out. I'm a bit relieve that it was a flea and not bed bugs. I gave the tv to best buy, so they can dump it in Africa, and I used two foggers to kill the fleas.

Moral of the story: melee players are disgusting.

Just about any shelf stereo out there will have at least one aux input and at least 2-way speakers and should be all you need for pretty much anything /vr/ related. I've seen some weird shit like shelf stereos with actual 5.1 analog input/output. If you want to get fancy (and already have good speakers) there's no end of old receivers out there, and most thrift stores will sell them for 20-30 bucks.

I finally got into the service mode of my Wega in the last couple days, and

Geometry can be made /better/ and sizing can be totally fixed via the menu

Anyone curious about service menu adjustments here are some Q's I answered for myself and observations:

- The flat CRT waviness is not something you can get rid of via the menu. Period

- Don't use the grid as an end all be all, play some actual games and use those to calibrate too. The overscan area on the grid, if totally visible, will result in games underscanning which is even more annoying imo

- If you've been playing for a while with wrong something or other, dont be surprised if stuff looking more correct initially takes getting used to

- Convergence is not something you can fix without opening up the TV on an SD set

Just put some kind of low-wattage light source above and behind your TV/monitor. I have a sconce on the wall above mine with one of those novelty, 40-watt "Edison" style bulbs you see in hipster restaurants all the time. It creates a low, warm ambient light that's enough to let you see, but not enough to make any glare or reflections on the screen. It's pretty comfy.
