Out of Doom2's, I'd say Chasm is the most special, its own thing, kinda map. I know Monster Condo was based on a nightmare as well, and it could well be the most polished of Petersen's Doom2's maps, but it's just not as striking in both looks and pistolstart gameplay. In other words, Chasm is more like Chasm, while Monster Condo is more like surprisingly good Petersen's map.

I would probably place Spirit World a bit below Monster Condo.

Chasm doesn't feel gamey to me, my point is. It's the ONLY Doom2's map of his that doesn't feel gamey to me.

Quake's counterpart would probably be Nameless City.

As for Doom1, I'll admit, for some god knows what reason, E3M2 has always stuck out for me. Don't have a damnedest idea, why, I don't even like it that much, and I know it's more or less universally despised.

Regardless. You know, come to think of it, could it be, that all three games more or less intentionally had That One Weird Level, fleshed out heads and shoulders above the rest, working on some kinda moon logic, which had fuck even knows what to do with more common more explicitly and conventionally gamey levels by the same mapper, and sort of stuck like sore thumb?

I want to hear what you guys think about it.

I finished it a few days ago and I really liked it. Good difficulty, good map design, nice textures and music.
The art of the textures was damn sweet. Often I would end up looking at them and appreciating the map's aesthetics after I killed all the monsters. Those heaven and tech base levels were damn nice. I even liked MAP19: Dehydration, which takes more than an hour to complete the first time.
I particularly didn't like the hell maps because the atmosphere was too dense, and the colors had a lot of contrast so I kinda rushed through them.

And the new enemies, I liked them. The Astral Cacodemon is an asshole though, I don't think it's speed was well balanced.

I haven't finished it, but I'm hating the last episode. I can't understand how they made those maps, but they run pretty slow. Framerate issues. I mean, it's a doom mod. Do I really need a beefy pc to run a fucking megawad? Anyway. That's my only issue. Cool visuals. The levels are good. Gameplay wise i don't feel that they do anything particularly special. But it has a lot of immersive moments. It has some sort of cinematic feel into it that's pretty cool. The new enemies are OK. The cyborgbaron is actually a cool concept. As for the Grey cacodemon. Intrinsic bottlenecks in ports like GzDoom, not a lot you can do without redoing lots of shit from the ground up.

It'll probably run much better in a Boom based port, they tend to handle highly detailed level geometry better.

It's worth trying toggling the Vulkan renderer on in GZDoom instead of the GL one. If your video card is old, LZDoom might work better - it's a fork of GZDoom with the older renderer, which might be better for older cards.

I feel conflicted. The visuals are of course excellent, and theres a lot of good gameplay / level design, but most of the later levels just feel like a grind due to the constant hordes and lock-in arenas. And besides the plasma soldier, the custom enemies are all just annoying unbalanced fucks.

I mean like simplifying some geometry, maybe convert some detail into composite textures and what not, and outright make some sacrifices if necessary.

It's very clearly built to be an extravagant to look at Boom mapset, GzDoom functionalities were very obviously an afterthought. Either they should have resigned that the map won't run well in anything but a Boom port (which is fine), and not have bothered with simply adding some Decorate eye candy, which at best makes things worse for the ports that support it.

I don't know why, but I all of the sudden started loving Tricks and Traps this year. I love it pistol start, I love it played after the previous maps. I don't get it. I used to just skip most of it by grabbing the two keys and high tailing it out of there, but now I like killing everything.

Decided to use linetracer projectiles instead of normal hitscans for the MG. Getting the trails to connect to the gun barrel when the player is moving took a lot of effort. Tried and failed doing that many times before but finally got it working

People were experimenting with VR back then too. Back when Wolfenstein 3D was new, someone put up a VR rig for it at a state fair and charged people to play it.
I've also heard of similar home made setups to play Rise Of The Triad as well. Results were so-so, but it was done.

The interface is made to the lowest dimensions it can run in, which is 320x200 (just as well as Doom's)
The difference between the two is that in Doom originally asset's size in the world is directly conected to its pixelcount, and no way to resize/stretch it aside from resizing the graphic itself via external means.

Yeah, you can toggle the smartgun feature. Each weapon has a minimum of one gimmick/setting. When it's on, there are squares drawn over monsters you aim at and if you hold LMB (RMB is the normal firing button) it'll lock the cursor to them.

And yes, a grappling hook like that would absolutely work. You wouldn't get all that much momentum with standard movement physics since that would dependent on air control, which is very low by default. Basically, all that's needed to reel in or out is to adjust the value that represents the length of the spring.

It's hideous to look at, and when you record the animated texture to video or on a stream, the encoding will for some reason shit its pants so on the final video/audience end it will look like a smudgy low def soup until the view shifts away from the texture.

Getting better at Doom wads is like eating spicier and spicier peppers. Plutonia is like eating a jalapeno. Hellbound, Back to Saturn X, the Scythe wads, and Alien Vendetta are like the black peppers you get in kung pao chicken. Sunlust and slaughterwads are like habeneros or carolina reapers.

It kinda sucks at first to lose a lot, but the better you get the more acclimated you become, and when you go back to less spicy wads all you get is the flavor and none of the burn.

The hottest ones always suck ass though.

GZDoom is in serious need of cleaning up its lighting modes. Theres too many of them, most of which look terrible, and only makes things confusing for people who don't know any better. Software lighting is the only one that actually looks close enough to how the lighting looks in software rendering. Doom, Dark and even Vanilla makes dark rooms way darker than they are supposed to be, and were often the cuplrit settings among those complaining about Sigil being too dark, for example. Standard, Bright, and Legacy all look too bright and flat, and pretty much suck out the life of the game.

If you want something extra, set post processing options to this. Skip bloom if you don't like it, but ambient occlusion is great even at low resolutions. It adds soft shadows in corners where two surfaces meet, which gives everything more depth.

Ambient Occlusion quality tanks FPS somewhat hard for me without all that much difference between low and high, atleast in GZD implementation, so I almost always set it to low.

Also Multisampling GZD uses is MSAA so turning it up to x4 or x8 will not tank FPS all that much, but will reduce jagginess on the sector edges without blurring anything else.

Also never use tonemap in WADs with non-default palettes. It's the color map that extends the blues and browns in rekkr, the palette has the same number, but with altered hues and brightnesses.
It actually has a few browns that are nearly redundant. I should've planned better really, but I was just fucking around originally and once I made enough art I was locked in. Coulda used the extra browns to get some more purples, which would've been cool. Or a better spectrum for a sunset sky texture. Which also would've made fun color gradiating textures and flats if you used them with a glowing light sector.

You know I could probably still do that pretty easily, and only lose one noticable shade of brown... Hmmmmmmm.

I had a similar one in which i was dreaming of playing a duke nukem 3d mod, called "Do you want to be President?" it begun with a unique intro showing many reasons many people would be president and there was a skip button on the bottom, that if you decided to hover to it there would be a transparent background with the word "Money" would appear, i skipped the cutscene and got prompted to menu to which i went to a new game:
The level was in some sort stage zone and duke spawned on the viewer seat with a shotgun but not the normal one, an alien looking one, anyway i decided to go to the stage untill a fucking chaingun version of the Cycloid emperor with miniguns for hands (and a face of a battlelord) appeared and blocked the way, so i instinctevely shoot him, only to see the ludicrous power of the alien shotgun( which was essentially the ssg level of pellets*10 and ordered as a square, and takes 1 shell to reload) i 2 shotted the battlelord emperor and then i've seen another alien, this time it was one of those small red things from half life with no legs but big as a battle lord, i decided to kill it and it took around 5 or 6 shots then i entered the behind the scenes

The thing that GZDoom really chokes on is massive monster counts. It's CPU-bottlenecked. It also doesn't do massively complex sector geometry that well BUT - that isn't a renderer issue per se. It can do a shit ton of high poly 3D models and not give a damn. The issue is how since sectors are all dynamic in height from the scripting side, it has to traverse the currently non-single-sided blocked sectors and send them to the GPU ever single frame, and it also has to do a ton of blockmap traversal for actor physics (actor physics which are more expensive because it has to do so many checks to support the scripting system).

The correct way to make a map that's gzdoom-friendly but more detailed than what other ports can manage is to use 3D models for complex geometry outside the play area (wall recesses blocked by impassible linedefs, stuff on the ceiling etc) and to use texture work and materials to your advantage. Scripted spawning or activation of actors is also not a bad idea.

This dream stuff just makes me wanna make a game where most levels are inspired by dreams i've had because i still remember a lot of them.
Sometimes some that are forgotten just come back and my method of remembering them has been finding what some have in common and build links between them.
Some were Doom related and felt like fake WADs that weren't made yet.

You know, I have a hot take to disclose. Moreover, it is probably one of the best-kept secrets in the history of gamedesign.

Fortress of Dr. Radiaki is actually a decent, playable, moreover, likely highly influential game. Made on an absolute dogshit, moreover, with a "Whatsa shooter, never played shooter before, wait holdon holdon, just bear with me I am sorta starting to figure this out". In other words, levels don't get more challenging, they get actually visibly better as you progress. You start to get better handle at what the fuck the author (Harvester's writer/director) was trying to do AS said author slowly but surely figures out what the the fuck he was trying to do. The main lure is that the author was quite quick on the uptake so him being like "Oh, so this goes here" is entertaining to watch - and to keep in pace to.

To reiterate, first, the game has absolute dogshit first level of the "random shit slapped together" kind, it gets better from there on, but it sure does serve as a filter. Second, the engine isn't just dogshit, you have to learn its every quirk as you go since the campaign - which, in contrast with engine is interesting - is explicitly built FULLY AROUND that dogshit engine. In other words, the game does NOT try to clone Wolf3D's setups AND solutions, it is built with full awareness of what a piece of dung the tech is and trying, to the best of one's capabilities to eventually concoct something interesting OF it. And it requires you to ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE of that engine as well.

The first step to make this game playable is to realize that Radiaki is NOT EVEN AN FPS. You use weapons for attack in very specific situations, typically after reload, and their primary function is instead luring the enemies towards you with sounds or lucky shots. Other than that

I beat the level and I went back to hunt for missed secrets. I found myself in the Sanctum Tower (near the end). I rotated the orrery and got this message:

Some Doom 2016 inspired mods seem to turn the Hell razer in some sort of fast firing plasma enemy and i thought of a probably shitty solution on how he could mechanically function like his 2016 source while having some visual feedback that isn't some drawn straight line that fucks up performance.

I just thought if the Cybermanc could try to copy the trick that molotov guy in Batman Doom pulled off in the Mac version, where he summons fire projectles except make it slimeballs and make them last a bit more or even use a green cloud sprite.
