There are many games that never made their way outside japan (or their respective country) officially, even when they were very good.

This thread is to post those hidden gems and some obscure and bizarre games.

Let's start with one that maybe many of you played at least once, but officially the SNES version never was released in Europe or U.S.

wai wai world 2 for the famicom

that's brilliant, it's like parodius, it saritizes konamis franchises, but it goes from plataformer to pop'n twinbee to others games

MAH NIGGA! I also recommend Front Mission 2 and 3 if you like FM1.

My personal favorite games that no one seems to have played are the Image Fight games, made by Irem, who also did the infamous R-Type games. The only game that made it over here was NES version of Image Fight 1, which also has an Arcade and PC Engine version over in Japan. The sequel, Image Fight 2: Operation Deepstriker was PC Engine CD.

>Millennia: Altered Destinies is a PC game created by Take 2 Interactive in 1995. It casts the player as a human freighter captain who finds himself transported to an alien ship. There, an alien calling himself a Hood gives the player a mission to save the Echelon galaxy which is about to be taken over by a malevolent race called the Microids. Apparently, the Milky Way is next should the player fail.

The only way to stop the Microids is to travel back 10,000 years in a specially-designed ship called XTM. It is equipped with everything the player will need to complete the mission. The player must then populate the Echelon galaxy with four indigenous races and ensure their development into powerful spacefaring civilizations.

The Hoods also state that this is not the first time they have tried to interfere with the timeline. To succeed, the player will have to fight off the previous attempts by the Hoods to alter the course of history.
I'm actually liking the concept.

The Tokimemo Drama Series is another interesting take on Tokimemo. This games are more story focused rather than simulation, still they have some minigames that have influence on the story. There are three games for the first Tokimemo and three more for the second game, the first three games are a lot better and had Kojima himself involved in the production. There are some Kojima easter eggs, in the first game when you go to the movies with Saki you go to watch Policenauts the movie in the latter games it becomes Metal Gear Solid IIRC.

Oh yeah SNES for sure. But most of the SNES games are already translated, at least the important ones, aeon genesis is doing a good job on that behalf. The biggest problem is the more unknown ones, like the PC98 era games, which were basically all Japanese, and all heavy on the text side. For some reason the 32 bit era games also are mostly untranslated, I guess that's where things started becoming more complicated to do romhacks. The Policenauts guys spent years on the translation for the PSX version, and they already had the script fully translated very soon in the project, the bigger problem was implementing it into the game.

Gussun Oyoyo has to qualify. It's the Japanese version of Lemmings, albeit more zany and crazy and shit. Here's a clip from a Saturn version of it:

This is another game that most people dont know is translated. Pia Carrot he Youkoso for the PC-FX, one of the few games on the system that is translated. Several sequels, actually. It's up to 4 at this point, I guess it sells.

Ray Barnholt of SCROLL did a Kickstarter recently for an issue solely dedicated to the games (they're his favorite); you can find a translated LP of the third game below.

Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan.

This is a massive detective adventure, I mean the whole game is 8 CD's (it was released as first part and second part). It can be considered as a proto Gyakuten Saiban since it uses a similar system but it also has some QTE anime scenes that add some climax to the adventure.

Gunparade March.

This is an SRPG mixed with some simulation mechanics that could be compared with Persona 3. Tengai Makyou series is not that obscure, but this spin off is quite funny (Tengai Makyou the fourth Apocalypse). It's the only game based outside of Zipang. The battle system might seem a bit outdated for 1998 but the best part of the game are the gags and the dialogue.

it's not that easy. It literally takes a couple of hours every day, consistently, for two years to get to a basic level that is not enough to even begin to actually live in Japan or play a video game. You need to fully immerse yourself as well. Unless you have the time and self control to commit to it as a full time job, you will not manage. Look at failure rates for JLPT, less than 50% of people pass generally.
