I've been a Nintendo guy for nearly my entire life, but the Dreamcast always struck me as a really fascinating and unique console. I've never seen one in real life but its just looks like such a fascinating library with unique features. You could even say dreamlike.

Dreamcast anons, is it worth trying to get into the dreamcast? What are some of your thoughts and experiences with the console?

I'm like this but with the Saturn instead. Something about these systems, maybe their imperfections or quirkiness that make them unique.

The Dreamcast was the first Sega console I owned, mostly because it had a near-Christmas release prior to the other companies releasing their next gen offerings. If the Gamecube of the PS2 had come out around that time, I'd surely have asked for either of those consoles instead of a Dreamcast. I'd guess this was a not too uncommon situation.

It's a fun machine with some unique games - but you could apply that statement to nearly every console on the planet. I got a dreamcast for my 11th birthday, and it's still one of my favourite systems.
Crazy Taxi is a great time-based driving experience.
Shenmue is a wonderful experience, but hasn't aged gracefully, it does take some commitment.
Powerstone 2 is a must play, just because it's so silly.
Rayman 2, although not an exclusive, is best played on this system.

Give it a go if it looks interesting. It's all emulated very well under redream if that's your preference.

Is it a programming or hardware fault with the Dreamcast that it so poorly handles read errors, or is it a flaw with GD-ROM technology itself? It seems like most consoles will just keep chugging and chugging until they eventually get a good read out of a dirty or scratched disc, but the Dreamcast seems to have a very high chance of just freezing entirely upon encountering a read error, even on a disc which while used isn't too badly beat up (and in places where it sometimes does indeed get a good read, so not talking about disc rot or a flaked off data layer).

Dreamcast ticks a lot of boxes. It's 480p compatible, it has online support and it's consolized arcade hardware so the Sega arcade titles on it run perfectly. A lot of people will play the "everything good has been ported" but you can feel the native flavor on DC versions. Its loud and needs a ton of mods to really be usable. If you can't at least get GDEMU and a fan replacement, then its going to suck badly. I can't even use a GDEMU since my dreamcast has a VA0 motherboard so im stuck with the GD-ROM noises. The fan is also extremely loud, I can only bare it for a few minutes until I have to turn it off and put it away. Most of the games for dreamcast though have upgraded ports on other systems, you don't really need one unless you are a collector.

I just do that in the shitter. Or in my truck, although the light is much better in the can. I'll tell you one surprisingly effective experience I had not that many years ago - I was waiting in my truck for this girl to sneak out and I was playing Hellnight on my PSP so I thought "why not plug it into the stereo since I have this patch cable right here". I never did and still don't especially like those relentless pursuit kinds of horror games but I had only recently discovered that game at that point and was giving it a try. Sitting there in the silence and the dark with the sound effects surrounding me like that, when she finally opened up the door I about pissed myself.

Do you also have a delayed response to your sperg reaction to sound? When I was in grade school there was this downie who was overly sensitive to noise like you are. But it took him at about half a second to react. People would come up behind him and clap their hands. He'd just sit there for a bit and then violently sperg out. He'd jump up, wave his arms around ans sequel like a pig. Do you ever do that?

A lot of varied games in all kinds of genres with at that time new unique takes/spin on gameplay presented with some of the best technological visuals of the day. Rhythm games, fighting games, puzzle games, light gun games, there was a lot to have fun with. Great times with friends in 4-player games, fierce competition is some great fighting games, showing off the best in VGA, meeting and communicating to new friends online in PSO, and a great flow of quality games month to month. Despite being quite fast with controller typing with the OSD, my friends all chipped in to getting me a keyboard for PSO, which woks great in Typing of the Dead and FPS games with the mouse. The system does have an abundance of arcade games, which may not suit the taste of meny on this board, but I am very happy to have had the experience with the Dreamcast in its day.

The system emulates well, and a lot of its games are fun and worth playing in my opinion, contrary to what most on /vr/ thinks.

Sega was in very bad shape financially, and Isao gave his life's fortune to keep Sega afloat. Sega used that money on two big gambles: Sakura Taisen 3 and Shenmue. The Love Hina games are VNs with a randomizer wheel Sega did on the side due to their earlier sucessful gamble with Evangleion helping them market the Saturn so well. VNs are cheaper to make than their high profile projects, and may catch a bit of sales. Isao died broke. Sakura Taisen and Shenmue are gaming and financial dead ends.

Imagine a parent giving all their wealth to a child, who in turn uses almost all of it on the Powerball and Mega Millions lottery. Spending the remainder for food for the remaining week and a gun. The lotteries did not hit, and the child watched their parent die from complications due to homelessness. All that is left is for the kid to put the gun to their mouth, that is Love Hina for the Dreamcast. Fortunately Sega was too dumb to buy ammo.

Sakura Taisen 1+2 did very well in Japan on the Saturn. Sega ported the PC versions of 1+2 to the Dreamcast to bide time for their huge investment into 3's development. I remember so many articleson the intensive development of 3, as it was intended to be a Dreamcast killer app. They redesigned the tactical combat away from pre-rendered sprites to polygons, they were one of the firsts to do away with the grid based system to a combo based spherical ranged movement/attack system, featuring all new character portraits and voice talent. Sakura Taisen 3 was a huge undertaking costing Sega so much that it was a shame it was a failure. The game was so bad, they had to rush out 4 onto the Dreamcast, down to just 3 chapters from the usual 10-12 chapters, into a visual novel for all the characters to say farewell, just to recoop some of the development costs. It was a monumentous failure by Sega. Sure it seemed like a decent gamble to try to innovate on what seemed to be a success, but making bad games caught up to Sega.
