I think the armor itself looks cool and would work for a different protag. However, one of the things that was great about the original Doomguy was how he was just this normal marine that was just so damn good he almost singlehandedly fought off the forces of hell. He didn't need special armor or super powers, just anger and a love of big guns. Whereas in most video games, the protagonist has some kind of unique attribute, ability, or item that gives them the capability to win against the primary antagonistic force, Doomguy was just a guy. Hell, he was the guy the rest of the soldiers left behind to guard the perimeter while they tried to handle things. That's what makes Doomguy special. That's what makes him cool. Giving him super special snowflake armor and explicitly superhuman physiology just subtracts from what made him great in the first place.

I mean, I think Sigil is very unfairly criticized. It's important to remember that the fact that there are no new textures, no limit-removing features, and not even a Super Shotgun or Doom 2 enemies come from the very premise of the project. I'm sure that if Romero had free reign to do anything he wanted, he could've created something amazing, but entire point of Sigil was to create something that could've reasonably have been a real expansion to Doom in the 1990s.

The thing is, modern Doom community very much focuses on putting large quantities of Doom 2 monsters in super-large limit-removing spaces with shiny new textures, so of course Sigil wasn't necessarily to everyone's tastes.

Doesn't mean it was BAD for what it was.

I have. Not a whole lot to it: you have to get a certain amount of kills before the time limit is reached to advance to next stage. The amount of kills needed goes up every stage. You'll be fighting Zombiemen, Sergeants, and Imps, whose movement and AI has been revamped to make them seem like players. In addition, JPFGuy, Chubbs, the Blood Cultist, and the Ranger make an appearance as well.

It's pretty fun, though very skinny on content atm, so it's little more than a novelty. Looking forward to seeing how Kinsie expands on it.

Initial release was 7/10 for me, but I'd say the updated versions bumped it to an 8/10, for improving the balance. These changes to the weapons make it so that you don't have to switch weapons to fire the same ammo type in a different way, you would just right click. In the case of bullet ammo, you only have one fire mode, and the chaingun replacement just makes the rifle fire faster. I would use the same model that Burl Tumd and Doom Alpha do for the rifle, because that thing is so fucking badass to me.

Regardless of all that, there are some other changes I would like to make to certain areas of the gameplay. I would make it so that all strafe running is just SR50 speed. No more button combos for a faster strafe run, you just always strafe run faster. I would make the rifle always shoot exactly on the crosshair, so that you don't have to manually click once at a time to snipe. I would also increase the carrying capacity for bullets by 100. You don't have to pick up a backpack to be able to carry the maximum amount of ammo, the backpack just gives you more ammo. The shotgun and it's fire mode would have one fixed spread pattern.

I want to trim the fat off of my favorite game and make the little "improvements" I've always wished for. Maybe that would be interesting for some of you to play.

The thing is trimming too much fat makes the game -too- simplistic, predictable, and boring. Swapping weapons and such forces small choices upon the player and those add up. Plus what do you do if the player picks up a BFG before a plasma gun? Will they only have the BFG altfire and no plasma gun primary? You're not the first to think of an idea like this, I had considered it a few years back during downtime of my main projects and I ultimately decided against it as fucks too much with what makes Doom great.

Also making it so you always run at SR50 speed means there's no effort involved at running max speed, so that takes away some of the satisfaction of learning that technique and putting it to use.

I notice it a lot when going from Doom 2016, Blood, or Quake back to Doom 1/2. It's a pain to cycle through a weapon you didnt want to equip, in order to get to the one you want.

I hated revenants until I played Quake and saw what Vore projectiles are like. Revenants are lenient and could be much, MUCH worse. Revenant projectiles are easy to guide into walls. So I just read Masters of Doom and it more or less changed my perception of id. The only member of the team I can appreciate is pic related edgelord. When I only knew about the anecdotes and the Keen shooting I thought he was just another trenchcoat asshole, but given his own traumatic life experience, the fact he seemed to be the only real family man (and son) and the arbitrator in id, I feel like he's someone I'd like to work with. He was just annoyed at Tom "BEEP BEEP" Hall and that's natural. And I love the whole Doom aesthetic.
Tom Hall is useless. Tom and iD grew apart with the development of Doom, but that doesn't mean he didn't do important stuff when he was there. He also did Rise Of The Triad, which is like Wolfenstein 3D but a hundred times more fun.

Doom and Quake don't just run and perform much better, they're much better games thanks to the team of designers who used his engine.

Use normal shotgun for picking off weaker enemies at long range, use double barrel for crushing knights and other weak enemies at close range.
Nailgun is good for ending wizards, super nailgun is good for damn near anything, especially if you're quadded out.

Quake doesn't give you the generosity that Doom has where excess pellets keep going if less than all of them were needed to kill a monster, with that in mind, the regular Shotgun is also not your shotgun tier weapon, so to say.
The Shotgun is your pistol tier weapon, and it actually has a lot going for it in that regard, it fires fast, it has a spread, but a tight one, so it's actually rather decent at medium to long ranges, you can find yourself outranging a monster and you can just plink away at him with your Shotgun, and works faster on him than you'd think, given the tight spread. Ammo is also plentiful, too.
The Super Shotgun has the really wide spread that Doom accustoms you to, which has its uses, for one it can be used to fight two enemies who are side by side, it can be used for more easily fighting the leaping Fiend demons up close, and it can actually be used to fight Shamblers with some ease, if you have a good corner/pillar and know how to bait his melee strikes, it doesn't have quite the same power as in Doom, with the lack of overpenetration, but it does still pack a punch at close ranges, and is pretty fast.

The base Nailgun isn't a lot to cheer about, but it's something, the Super Nailgun does double damage and sounds like thunder, this is one of the best weapons for fighting Shamblers with, particularly with Quad Damage, high DPS and no resistance.

The Grenade Launcher is pretty pitiful given it's impotent range, but it's more just a tool for you to dispatch of zombies with. You get the Rocket Launcher later, which is basically like Doom's, range, high rate of fire, and power, except you can rocket jump and aim freely.
Mind Shamblers take half damage from explosives, so save this ammo for other beasts.

Also make sure to exploit any Quad Damage as much as you can, if you run out of enemies, hurry to find more so you can kill them before the powerup runs out

Some megawads do a decent job of keeping at least HMP somewhat balanced, even if they balanced UV first. And Ribbiks actually balances his maps on HMP first, and then adds to UV afterwards.

The point you seem to be missing is that Doom isn't hard sci-fi. It's not trying to replicate reality. Going "oh, this is what future equipment would really look like" isn't really a valid criticism in this context, because that's not what Doom is about. I think the suit's primary problem is just too many ridges, bumps, and vents all over the place. Like why do the shins have those layered ridges down their entire surface when shins don't bend? It needs larger, unbroken surfaces and probably more contrast between its different hues. What I think Doom is lacking in Nu doom and now Eternal is the promise of something really simple, like what the classic doom logo seems to hold and lets you mind wander.

That weird dark cyber style, with foreboding shading and future megastructures blending with hellish nightmares.

The best artists of 80s and 90s knew how to do it, and we still have some who do know it but overall game development is full of really lame artists and it was never exactly easy to perfectly emulate a style when the engine you are working has restrictions or just its own nature.

So question, what the fuck happened to FreeDoom? Before it looked and played like this abandoned, cancelled doom clone which I thought gave it a fuckton of soul (pardon the buzzword but I have no other idea how to describe it) and identity and then the new updates with RayMooHawk's redesigns (which are great artistically, don't get me wrong!) come along, and suddenly the entire game just looks like every other generic FLOSS game.

To be fair, Plutonia is a genuinely difficult WAD to beat without savescumming on UV difficulty and so is Sigil. Most people aren't skilled enough to make beating these WADs trivial on the second hardest skill setting in Doom and I find it very peculiar that /vr/ thinks this is some big flaw.

I think that's completely flawed reasoning, UV is the hardest setting intended in most cases, so the author is open to make it as hard as they see fit. That was the point with Plutonia, to be more challenging for people who thought Doom 2 was too easy, and it did that perfectly.

Should every SMW romhack have the same general difficulty level as SMW? I don't fully see why people don't like the concept of the Praetor Suit. It seems like a natural evolution. It's not about all having the same difficulty curve though, Plutonia for example isn't just somewhat harder then the original two Doom games on UV, it is incredibly harder and was made so as a deliberate design decision by the WAD authors themselves. The enemy armor system is cool as fuck. You can outright destroy it with enough gunfire (though the enemy will almost always die first if they're wearing green), and the condition you find it in when you kick it off is exactly how much they had left when they were still alive and wearing it. If you get an enemy incapacitated, you can stand on top of them while they're downed to bypass their armor with any weapon. Chaingunners are susceptible to headshots because they're not wearing helmets. Helmeted marines are more vulnerable if you shoot at their legs. It all feels really good and natural, a complete turnaround from when the system was first implemented.

Shot gets completely stopped even by green armor, you have to go for weak points or the incap bypass to get anywhere with it against armored enemies. 9mm can penetrate green, but it loses most of its raw damage in the process. .355 will get through green decently, but the revolver is a joke weapon. 4.26 rips through green like paper, but stops flat against blue. 7.76 is the god round and won't stop for any armor. There's no way to tell which kind of armor an enemy has before you shoot them, but it's only a 12% chance of being blue, and only the marines and chaingunners have it at all. (Nazis too, but they're a rare sight, and they always have green without exception.)

The same round hierarchy mostly applies to the shield system used by higher-tier demons, as well. 9mm and .355 perform a bit better shot-for-shot than 4.26 in this field, but 4.26 compensates with higher capacity and 2100 RPM firemodes. 7.76 massively outperforms all other small arms, by a greater margin than with armor. Once a shield is broken, it takes some time to recharge and the demon is vulnerable, so you have a window where you can use 9mm or shells effectively. It ties in nicely with the wounding system, which slows the movement and aggressiveness of hurt enemies, giving you the time you need to switch weapons once the shield is down.

I've been powering through a lot of these old school shooters lately and am really enjoying them but the old build games are giving me problems where having vsync makes the game feel very, very sluggish compared to having vsync off, but vsync off causes screen tearing even with the frame rate limited to 60 in the menu, also frame times bounce between 15 and 19 for seemingly no reason

I have an i5-9600k and a 1060 6gb, its not like there's a hardware bottleneck or anything

I think the game is still great. Regardless.

The speed and lethality of the aliens made your own character speed irrelevant, you even had to calculate explosions so you dont die from the acid. Also with the rare but one shot facehugger it created a very tense experience even with you armed to the teeth.

I hope Alien eradication creates the same feel.

A rocket does 1d8*20 damage. With the 128 damage from being right next to the splash effect, that's 148-288 damage per rocket an average of 228 damage.
