It was one of the best Doom clones around its time and it's pretty good on its own too. My only gripe with it is its huge sewer level but that's far from being a bad point towards the game, it's just my personal hate towards sewer levels.

I had the demo for this game, it was pretty fun. I thought DF 2 was much better, even though I generally liked sprite based fps games better, the level design was better. Still a great game, especially if you played it when it was released, rather than after the sequel was already out.

Bizarrely, the Mac port is the very best version of this game. Or at least, it was the very best commercial release.

I remember there being a number of ground and sea vehicles you have to use, so if you don’t enjoy the surface missions it might not be for you. I think it was mostly the same team as Rogue Squadron 1, so you ought to give it a shake.

A mod for Jedi Academy, it's a remake of the first six levels of Dark Forces (up to the detention center). Definitely worth checking it out.

Unfortunately, one of the main devs apparently died of a heart attack, so it's unlikely it's ever going to be finished.

Rebel assault games were rail shooters, sure, but they had the most authentic starwars visuals and music of their era.

https://youtu.be/H7_6FWMFgiI

They had a mix of space combat and "shooting waves of storm troopers" gameplay. The late 90s arcade game was like a more polished version of them.

>> No.6033036

Precisely. It's pretty much a good-looking (for its time) interactive movie in the form of an on-rails shooter. It's a fun romp to play through once, but has practically zero replayability.

>> No.6033083

>>6033036
The rebel assault games were important at the time because they used real lucasfilm props and film effects for their FMV scenes. Real storm trooper armor and ship models. It was the first real star wars footage people had seen in a decade. These games came out before the 1997 special edition rerelease and fans were starved for original starwars content. The last "new" star wars they had seen was the 80s ewok tv special.

The live action cut scenes in DF2 were equally well received. This game had the first live action lighsaber footage made by ILM since 1983. In the disney era this means nothing but alt the time this was a huge deal.

Dark Forces is from the era when games did unnecessary things simply because it made sense. Now everything is carefully considered so that only what the largest demographic wants will even consider to be implemented. Like, why is the AI's ability to see Kyle dependent on how dark it is around him? It's not a stealth game, it's a shooter, you're supposed to mow down all your opposition. Why would you program a shooter game AI to take darkness into account? The answer is because it makes sense.

It's amazing how original content Star Wars games made before the prequels managed to capture the feel of the OT yet still expand the universe in an interesting way. Dark Forces made the Jedi and Sith feel exotic and mysterious while nailing the OT aesthetics, SotE was a fantastic bridge - even Rogue Squadron, though technically released in the prequel era, was conceived and based off the OT feel.

Amazing how mid tier video game companies with writers and designers barely making minimum wage were able to create better stories and aesthetics than millionaire writers and directors and designers. The mid 1990s really was the absolute peak of Star Wars.

I cannot get into Jedi Outcast. something about the level design is too hap-hazard or something.

Which is weird because Dark Forces II isn't much different in that regard but the levels seem to make more sense.
Like there's a reason you need to run over here to turn on the conveyor and run back to where you were to ride a shipping crate carried by that same conveyor.

But in Jedi Knight 2 it just seems like a switch does a thing on the other side of the huge-ass map for no reason.
