Best (modern) controllers for emulation?

I use a wired XB360 controller

I don't feel I need anything else and every modern purpose-built 'retro controller' I've seen looks like cheap crap

Dualshock 4 is solid (usable D-Pad and buttons for retro titles, as well as analog for PS1/N64, and dare I say the sixth gen). I hear the Xbone's D-Pad is improved compared to the X360's travesty but I don't know. I guess that leaves the Switch pro controller which I seems to use and Xbox-like design with a decent D-pad. Not really much to discuss tb́h (regarding last-gen controllers, new stock pretty much disappears so I wouldn't bother).

Say maybe this is a good thread for this: anyone got a recommendation for Famicom controllers that are good for diagonals?
I only have one game that needs quick, precise diagonal movement (Jackal), but this built-in Famicom pad is giving me trouble with them.
A NES controller through a NES-to-Faimcom adapter cable could be OK too.

it's borderline unusable for platformers.
not only is it in an uncomfortable location, it's a very clicky style of dpad that was obviously instended for menus and quick-select slots in modern games.

Despite being in a cross shape is feels little better than the 360 dpad, only use it if you absolutely have to, even using the analog stick mapped to the dpad might be a better option.

Nah, I have an OLED TV with variable refresh and low latency. You couldn't give me enough money to use a literally reeing old CRT, make a fire hazard from all the old systems I'd want to use, and trip over a bunch of controller cords instead over this TV, a singular Wii U Pro controller, and Retroarch the way I have it set up.

Downgrade from U Pro across the board. Worse (but not unusable) d-pad, no remaining battery indication on the controller itself (can only be seen on an actual Switch console), and the battery sucks on top of that. If we exclude any new controllers that try to ape or directly rip off the retro controllers I'm gonna go with switch pro. Immensely comfortable for long hour sessions and face buttons are very good, large surfaces that don't poke your thumb with each press and require little exertion without being mushy. Speaking of the d-pad doesn't actually have any real problems to it, turns out all the talks about it being mushy or innacurate inputs was for the 8bitdo switch controllers.

Naw, I should mess around with it more, but the TV is best at 1440p in general because HDMI 2.1 is a complete non-starter and you can't have 120hz 4K til Jewvidia and AYYMD make a card that adopts this now 2 year old standard. 60hz limit means no variable refresh on the systems and arcade games that go above it a bit, but not the worst to just vsync those I guess.

An actual SNES controller with a Mayflash adapter, or a DS4 (with DS4Windows if you want to use bluetooth). The D-pad on my best SNES controller is better than the DS4 since the DS4 will interpret a hard press on the left or right D-pad buttons as diagonal downwards if I'm not careful, but the DS4 has much better click to the buttons. Might by some new rubber membranes for my SNES controllers from NESrepairsshop.com, but I'm not sure where my nintendo bits are. >The shoulder buttons feel hard to reach for me. Its like I'm having to stretch my fingers up to them
It's designed with that stupid hinge because it wants you to loop your index finger over the button while you actuate the triggers. To hit the shoulder buttons, you sort of roll your fingers inward.

Like everything else with that shit controller, it's not comfy.

I use DS3 and it has been my go-to controller for at least 7 years.

thought about getting a DS4 until I saw that fucking (((""""""share""""""))) button. so not anymore.

prompted to try out an XBone controller though. they seem decent.

tbf you can get an $80-$100 7/xp notebook that'll run everything up to PS2 without trouble and keep your win10 cancer for the modern games that require you download planned obsolecence cancer on your computer.

Works on my machine with win10. Maybe there's something wrong with your setup.

Why do you guys hate the 360 pad so much? It's the only one I can do 720s with and the only thing that sometimes bothers me about it is that it's slippery after a couple tense games.

bros, I need a second opinion because of the Wii U Pro controller. On amazon they got a 3rd party alternative of that one by CooleedTEK that looks exactly the same and it's like 30 bucks only. It's an amazon's choice product and people say it's great. But I obviously trust /vr/'s judgment more than normie consumers. So should I risk it or buy a used original Wii U Pro?

This. Works perfect for all the best games and genres. If its too "awkward" for your favorite games, then I'm afraid you just don't have good taste.

Just because it looks the same doesn't mean any of the moving parts are going to feel or behave remotely similar. Just assume it's completely different unless you get feedback from someone here who has one.

Maybe I'm weird but I just use arcade stick and buttons for everything, even home consoles. Its just way more comfortable to me, and its easy to reach all the buttons without contorting your fingers to hit shoulder buttons or blistering your thumbs on a pad.

I dont play dual analog games so thats no problem. Hint: most PSX games dont require dual analog because they work with the original psx controller which only had a dpad, so with an arcade stick youre set for all retro consoles except n64, which lets face it n64 games dont work on any generic gamepads very well, so youd need to get a special n64 pad anyways.

No this is a meme. I tried this controller, and wanted to like it but the plastic is really hard and makes my thumbs hurt really bad after a couple hours. Also something is fucked with the handle width, because it really makes that tendon in between my thumb and forefinger start hurting too.

I use a ps2 one with an usb cable (or the PS2 straight for emulating GB, NES and MD)

Works great so far
