For me its go to be Gradius II / IV and Salamander 2. The music is phenomenal, best i ever hear in a shmup, the pacing feels right, the graphics are good, the upgrade system in Gradius is a nice touch. You die because you suck and it doesn't feel like a game that tries to steal your shekels. The second loop in Salamander 2 is great with new music and max 3 lives difficulty. Insert coin doesn't work second loop nice ;)

I agree, maybe replace Gradius II (still great) with Gaiden. I have probably beat Salamander 2 over 200 times. Have a great weekend anon.

Get ready for a thread where people compete to see who can claim the slowest, most antiquated, preferably hori game as their favorite, OP is off to a good start.

Raiden II is a favorite of mine. There is something just really perfect about it even if the purple laser is overpowered and it's fairly primitive overall. The music has this melancholy to it that I really enjoy and it just seems like in a lot of ways it really laid the foundation of future vertical shooters. I can always come back to it even after playing more modern stuff and it still bangs.

Ketsui is probably the most into a shooter I ever got though, the scoring system is a great example of day to learn, years to master, leaves lots of possibilities to do it different ways and try different things, music bangs, etcetc

I actually find the purple laser in Raiden II to be pretty weak, especially against bosses. I usually go with the default spread gun with regular missiles for max damage.
