Not the falling-block kind, the kind where your dude moves around on a grid and pushes blocks and collects things or whatever, like Sokoban and Chip's Challenge and such. I've been playing Old Tower and Ao lately. What is the ultimate evolution of this art form?

the first game is easy enough to be beatable even if you're not an expert at these types of games. really the perfect difficulty level.

Lolo 2 has a noticeable difficulty increase, with more stages that require quick reflexes over puzzle solving

and Lolo 3 increases the difficulty once again, to beat this one requires complete mastery of every mechanic in the series,, and some of the reflex based stages demand near perfect execution

I need help guys, I beat Lolo 1 but gave up on Lolo 2 when I got stuck here. Worse part is that it isn't due to the level being complex, but simply because one heart it's seemingly impossible

I simply can't figure how to get the heart at the center-top without dying, you are forced to go over the medusa and you can't really get a block there to cover you.

Is there any mechanic that I'm missing that might help me? I would appreciate if you don't give me the answer and just a clue to get that damn heart

A Friday the 13th puzzle game came out about a year ago on Steam. It has microtransactions, loot crates, cut scenes, QTEs, gender neutral characters, experience points, and it's simpler/easier than games made for 7 year olds in the 1980s. Probably the definitive modern take.

While the NES version still haunts me to this day, I have tried the arcade version recently. It is all wrong, it's all fucked. Ogres in nes version die when they fall. Not in the arcade, at least not if they fall just ine square. Enemies spawned from the infinite generators linger a lot longer too, and some of the timing is off.

I've brought up Lufia 2 in a bunch of different /vr/ and /v/ threads in the past.

Because I hate every aspect about that awful game. The Puzzles are poorly thought out, the writing is downright insulting, the scenarios are full of ridiculous inconsistencies, and the RPG mechanics for the battles are so cluttered you get hit with an encyclopedia page every time someone levels up.

The only saving grace is the Wild Arms series seems to take direct inspiration from it, probably because the devs of those games had such an awful experience playing this game that they dedicated their careers to making an working version of it.

Solomon's Key 1 is shit.

I meant to reply here after looking up Adventure of Lolo but forgot.

There's zero advantage to replaying the US NES games.
Replay the series in Japanese instead from the very beginnings on MSX (or even better, FDS) because the 3 american NES games are all compilations of the first tutorial levels from each JP-only game but spread around and enough to fill an entire game.
Zero exclusive content, except one that had 6 new levels.
There are "japanese versions" of Lolo 2 and Lolo 3, but they only share the engine and graphical assets. The levels are all new.
In all honesty, those versions are insulting.

US Game Boy version is still superior (tripled the number of levels) but idk if that's just HAL US catching up on levels they skipped.
Windows 95 game is awesome too.

You definitively should, as well as the FDS game (a refined remake of the very first game before the series experimented with dungeons and druaga-like puzzles, before the US even got any of the games).

There's (>>6023729) Puzzle Boy from Atlus, which inspired an entirely new game with monster collection elements (Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Puzzle de Call! for the GBA) then a minigame in SMT3, "SMT: Nocturne Block Puzzle". Making a puzzle more meaningful in the game's story has less to do with making it realistic, and more to do with what you want the player to be thinking as they solve it.

Ico for example uses it's puzzles to build the relationship with Yorda, and making you naturally feel anxious whenever you have to seperate from her. In the Witch's house, all the solutions involve doing cruel things to helpless creatures that trust you, and then avoiding their revenge.

In that regard, if a player doesn't notice a puzzle mechanic because it was blending in too well with the scenery, that will be more likely to break the immersion. This happens a lot with sandbox games where the player inevitably ends up ignoring the entire game screen and focusing on the minimap with all it's Quest markers.

>> No.6049720

>>6028403
Once you get to the harder stages you basically have to do a bunch of trial and error runs because you have to figure out which hearts give shots and you have to see if enemies respawn if there's a block / enemy on top of them. In Lolo 3 I remember you also have to experiment with water currents. It's kind of annoying because the devs could have used visual indicators to show all of this.
