Get used to controls, memorize levels, learn where the hidden chests are, look up item spawn order so you can recover armors if you get hit, be prepared for things to not go as planned because it's a very random game, use charged attacks a lot once you're fully upgraded. I'd recommend playing Ghouls N Ghosts instead though desu, it doesn't have nearly as much fat when it comes to items and chests and is a better paced game.

I remember buying this on a whim because I found it for £20 and never actually thinking I'd play it since I thought it was going to be terrible and difficult like AVGN said it was (didn't know the NES port was basically a shitty port), but after giving it a try it was really fucking good.

Played and finished it in front of a room of about ten people since it was the final week for uni before the Christmas break and we had nothing better to do. I knew I'd have to go through the game twice so I was prepared, but thank fuck the game lets you retry the final stage if you forget the weapon to beat the final boss with instead of playing the whole game again, had to look that up sadly but it was still good.

Scythe and lance have the easiest attack spells to aim. Scythe's especially is apocalyptic. But when upgraded they are relatively clumsy as physical weapons.

Homing crossbow is fantastic in the autoscrolling water section; any kind of crossbow does well against red demons; scythe and lance have the easy offensive spells. But dagger is the only weapon that is great pretty much everywhere and in every way. It's overpowered and has no serious disadvantages (except from a game design perspective, because it's overpowered), and OP should probably lean on it and only it.

I beat it the other night for the first time. I don't really recommend it.
I also think the first stage is one of the hardest in the game. Getting past that second elevated section with the dog on top, just before the spitting bone pillars, requires at least 2 or 3 resets before I can make it through without taking a hit.
Stage 2 is pretty easy though. No real issues there.
Stage 3 can be difficult thanks to some really tight enemy timing stuff and some stupid jumps on small pillars.
I forget which stage number it is but the snow stage is my favorite in the game as it's one of the only stages I felt hit a really solid difficulty balance. Challenging but not too challenging.
The last two stages aren't bad at all once you know what you're doing and the final boss is a joke once you get the pattern down.
It's not a great game. It's got fun visuals and music, just great aesthetics, but the SNES slowdown is unbearable at times. I'm glad I beat it but I really didn't think it was that good and it's not one that's gonna have me coming back to it often. I'd sooner just play through any given classic Castlevania as I think by and large they're much more thoughtfully designed games.

>> No.6022983

>>6022970

Well with non-bow weapons you can always plan to fight arremers with your spell, which you will often have with daggers because the daggers let you kill things before they steal your gold armor. But yeah the bow is the only weapon that's kinda specialized for them without reliance on the spell.

AVGN did a lot of damage to the series' reputation, seems like most of the time GnG fans have to dispel bullshit that comes directly from those videos (or misinterpretation of those videos) before others will even touch what's a great bunch of games. All the games restarted you near the end if you forgot the necessary weapon, it's just that the first game started you on level 5 instead of the final one, which is a bit annoying but the levels are really short anyway.

second. stick with the dagger. its the best weapon by far. when you get the gold armor you get good magic with it that can waste bosses quickly

stick with the crossbow combined with the gold armor and use the magic spell often on your first run. crossbow magic will reveal any treasure chests on the screen. remembering these locations will help you in the future.

platforming is harder than shooting/avoiding enemies in this game. find a safe location where you can practice getting comfortable making weird double jumps everywhere.

>don't listen to the fags that say this game is bad. its pretty damn good
It didn't strike me as good enough to want to play through more than once, but not nearly bad enough to say it's actually bad. There's just a few stupid things about it, like the ultra stiff jumping mechanics, the horrendous slowdown, and some pretty shitty enemy RNG elements in a few places.
Otherwise it's a great looking, great sounding game from its era that offers a hell of a challenge for anyone looking for it. If that's what you want from it, it delivers. It's earned its difficult reputation but I don't think it's well designed enough to be remembered for much more than that. Point is I could see both sides of the argument.

I guess I've just grown impatient, because I just find it so long and boring.

>> No.6025089

>>6024881

The jumping is fun. That's just part of the game.

To me the stupidest thing about this game is that they didn't correct the obvious, severe imbalance among the weapons, and among the weapon levels even for a single weapon. Arthur's very limited ability to dodge and his ability to kill most enemies in one or two quick shots (even with the weakest weapons) imply that clumsy yet heavy weapons are going to be far less effective than fast weapons that are easy to hit enemies with. Yet the developers chose to "reward" you for finding better armor by giving you a clumsier and heavier lance, scythe, or axe. And when you switch from say dagger to axe, they pay you back for your loss of firing rate and projectile speed by increasing your range and power, even though the dagger already has that much range and power as long as you just, like, throw two daggers whenever one wouldn't be enough.

And also the upgraded axe is useless near a solid ceiling, and the homing crossbow bolts need a better target-seeking system, or an earlier timeout, or some other small tweak to prevent you from ever being unable to fire when you need to defend yourself.

It's a shame. The weapon system could be a lot of fun to explore, but only parts of it are.

I basically like the game a lot though. But yeah it could use another round or two of polish. I'd like to see a romhack rebalance the weapons AND fix the slowdown. Maybe the two issues are even connected; it seems like the developers may have made the weapons extra clumsy, in some cases, because they were constantly terrified of having too many projectiles on the screen for the hardware to handle. With the scythe especially, it's embarrassing how the slashy-slashy hit animation they stuck in for that weapon (which is cool) actually (if I remember correctly) stops you from throwing your next scythe until it finishes playing. But who knows, maybe that had nothing to do with hardware limitation.
