It was painful to watch back then, and it's painful to watch now. Everything looks bad, nothing makes sense, the plot is poorly paced for what little plot exists, and the almost textbook sequel hook ending is the bloody diarrhea smear on top of the pile of shit that is the SMB movie. It was so bad the two main actors were three sheets to the wind for the majority of it, and you can tell by looking at their eyes during the movie.

I liked it as a kid, and I love it as an adult.
Dennis Hopper as King Koopa is one of the best gifts hollywood ever did to us.

Could work if done right. It ironically couldn't be a 2D sidescrolling platformer, though. It would have resemble like... Jak & Daxter.

It really didn't have much to do with the games at all. They borrowed some character names and threw in some dinosaurs.

>> No.6016425

It was pretty shit. They removed the series from the lighthearted 8 and 16 bit platforming game and tried to tie it into a dark "kewl" urban setting. This gave it neither the appeal of the video game, nor the appeal of being its own thing.

I had the Luigi figure when I was a kid. Fucking dropped it in some freshly poured asphalt and cried like the 4 year old bitch I was. Funny how my 3 year old has no such attachment to any of her toys.

I enjoyed it as a kid, it had a more edgy take on the Mario universe, some of the references are very obscure or subtle I didn't even get as a kid though.
Also, it was dino-themed so that was an extra if you were a kid in the early 90s.
My only real disappointment with the movie is that actual dino-form King Koopa appeared on screen for like a second. But now as an adult I know that would have resulted in bad early CGI display instead of awesomeness, I'd rather have more Dennis Hopper on screen, but back then I didn't know who he was, and I wanted dinosaur Koopa.

I saw this as a kid at the theater opening weekend in 1993 and I was so confused. Like realizing about halfway through that Dennis Hopper was Bowser and wondering when Mario and Luigi were ever going to wear their red and green overalls and why Luigi is clearly not Mario's biological brother and 20 years younger than him.

>> No.6020683

No. It's underrated though. It's kinda dumb and it doesn't do a great job of selling confused kids on the idea of reimagining everything. But it's also fun and inventive and sometimes intriguing. At least some of the people who worked on it clearly cared about it and tried hard, and the cast is pretty strong. It's successful in some ways and a failure in others. It's not great, but it's not just forgettable trash either.

I don't really like the grimy, depressing style they gave to the dino-people setting. It's not just incompatible with the bright, cartoon style of Mario - it's also ugly in its own right. But I think the imagination they put into it deserves some respect. The movie has spirit, and it works as a curiosity if nothing else. It could have been a lot worse. I don't think it should have been made to begin with, but it's good that they at least did something weird and surprising.

I always enjoyed the gritty look of the alternate dimension. Whoever thought that Mario's movie should have a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting was very based. Perhaps not sane, but very based.
