Why didn’t Sega ever do a Ristar sequel? I think it’s a great game that could’ve had even better sequels. Did it not sell well enough?

>Why didn’t Sega ever do a (fill in blank) sequel?
This a question we all ask at one point or another and no one has a good answer for.

>> No.6017096

It's a trade-off, we wouldn't have gotten so many awful unnecessary Sonic sequels if they'd made more good games. The grass is always greener, you know.

Wasn't Ristar released very late on genesis life cycle?
A sequel would have been 3d so I'm glad it didn't happened

The Ristar sequel could've been 2.5D like NiGHTS or Klonoa. Or 2D like Clockwork Knight or Astal.

cause sega was the type of company that made more new ips than sequels

because Sega was in full "just fuck my shit up"-mode in 1995 and they needed something that could bring them into the next generation full force, and that game was Yuji Nakas Nights into Dreams

Same with Capcom.

I completely forgot about both Clockwork and Astal. Is Saturn emulation solid yet?

I love Ristar but I'm fine with no sequel. Some things are better off left alone.

They could have made Ristar a character in sonic but no instead we got Big the Cat.

Ristar was SEGA's failed attempt to replace Sonic by reviving the original concept of grabbing and throwing objects. Imagine if it was Ristar who got all the shit sequels and spin-offs and not Sonic.

I'm convinced to this day that Sonic Unleashed was originally going to be a Ristar game. The Werehog's gameplay involves stretchy arms to grab enemies and swing/sling/climb poles/ladders/etc. Chip is Sonic's friend who is the cute little anthropomorphization of a celestial object.

Knowing Sega, is it really that hard to believe that someone wanted to make a Ristar revival, but Sega didn't think it would sell, so they had to pair him with Sonic? Then it is so hard to believe that, in their infinite marketing wisdom, they said to get rid of the obscure but fan-favorite character and replace him with more Sonic? This was at a time when everyone was complaining about "Sonic's friends" being playable, so we were only allowed to have Sonic playable for the next ten years. Technically the Werehog is Sonic, and Ristar isn't.

Marketing team was right in that nobody gives a shit about ristar.

Except The Werehog made the people they were trying to please so mad that they disregarded the whole game. Wouldn't have happened with Ristar.

the werehog's stretchy arms were just a lazy way to ripoff the length and speed of kratos' whips. that entire werehog gameplay aspect is a blaring god of war ripoff

I'm sure that didn't hurt getting development of the game made. "Hey look! It's like this other popular game!" The platforming in the Werehog stages also has parts I'd say feel like they could have been intended to be a 3D Ristar.

i mean ristar in general was based off prototype sonic gameplay where he was a bunny that'd throw shit around with his ears. so sonic adopting that somehow is probably more natural and not ristar-related than you'd think
