you think ID or whatever should officially license Arcane Dimensions? Maybe for the 25th anniversary?

Cus every fan pack, community speed map, seasonal level pack is using it as a base now. So its basically unofficially the new base anyway.

Why yes, AD is an amazing tool to factor out trendwhores out of the picture. Like, if you have even one AD map, you can go to hell for all I care, no exceptions. This - and speedmaps, except I could maybe be okay with a person having made like maybe 2 speedmaps before realizing "Dude, the fuck am I doing?" AD? No, anyone who ever mapped for AD simply deserves big fat ZERO benefit of my doubt.

My hot take is that sock's Quake and AD maps treat Quake tropes in a way similar to how Exile treated Riven's tropes - similar looking setups, radically different resolutions - except Exile invented its resolutions, while sock's maps blatantly copy-paste entry-level modern mainstream tropes. And my point is, if I wanted to play, say, Bioshock - why would I ever want to play Bioshock - I would've played Bioshock, not its low-poly demake in Quake engine. And if I wanted to replay aforementioned Myst 3: Exile, I would've done just that, enjoying radically more smart setups than anything anywhere in AD, SimonOC's or not, as well as incomparably more memorable and evocative visual designs to boot.

Because there is a word for what AD, in what it differs from Quake, does, and this word is "profanation". AD boasts nostalghia, and is packed with Quake references - until you realize ALL those references, at least, until SimonOC's maps are concerned, consistently omit crucial gameplay-related nuances of the original setups (thus systematically misrepresenting them), making up for what's missing with superficial visual clutter without any rhyme or reason at worst, Exile-derivative at best, and shit copypasted from modern games (again, in simplified form).

In other words, my take is that everything Quake-related the main author of AD does, systematically and deliberately misrepresents Quake as being significantly dumber and more simplistic than it actually was, and posing it as if it is you who had nostalghia googles all along. The worst thing is, it seems to be working, aforementioned "supplanting as a default mod base", even if severely exaggerrated, being point in case.

Okay, let's talk weapons. In old Quake you had to use either explosives or Quad to gib zombies, AD gives you triple-barrel and enhanced axe, taking away that bit of resource management.

In Quake you could snipe moving targets using shotgun, due to it being hitscan, the downside being it having a spread. AD makes both shotguns projectile-based by default, eliminating any point of using shotgun over nailgun at a distance.
AD introduces, what? plasma rifle or something? which supplants lightning gun the moment you find it, without, IIRC, even an option to switch back to it - and spew-pews - surprise - projectiles as well. How would I ever exist without it.

>> No.6011157

>>6011147
If you are sock, then no, leeching off Exile does not make you any special, it is one of the most widely cited modern games ever, thanks not in the least to its amazing "organic" design - and, by the way, it's a horrible choice for a game to be demade in Quake anyway, if only because Quake can't into smooth curves and surfaces. And, last, but the most important part: your "'innovations"' suck. fucking ass.

And, man, I mean, even original Seulcher had a more monocled source of inspiration (Azrael's Tear).

You guys ever watch people play user maps? I'm amazed how little they look around and observe the mappers efforts.

I played the Halloween and Christmas's packs for Quake recently and then went and watched some people on YouTube play and people just zoom zoom through the maps.

I can just imagine the mapper watching back to see the feedback or if the person liked the map he took a month to make. "Oh here's that huge sprawling room that took me ages he's coming up to it now" and the dudes are just HUH HUH HUH through the place.

I always take a nice long look at all the maps and take it all in. I appreciate the work these dudes are putting into 20 year old games.

It drives me nuts to see someone playing a map I'm familiar with, walk past the doorway they need 30 times because they're rushing through, or miss a switch, or a hint... etc... Or like you said, just plain ignore the mapping effort.

The objectively correct way to play it is either with Overthinked Doom 3 if you wanted a horror experience, or with Perfected Doom 3 if you wanted a Doom-like.

I didn't really understand or like the new guy that much when I first jumped into it, but after 3 consecutive ironman runs of stock Doom 2, I believe I'm starting to like him and figure out how he plays. He's more methodical I think. His gun has a slow reload time but it's very powerful, which encourages keeping your distance, and his staff is a good backup for oneshotting weaker enemies and deflecting projectiles while a slow door or elevator moves. His medkit provides self-sustainability, and I really enjoy that the OP potions have quirks that encourage different playstyles.

When did companies stop releasing source code to their games roughly? The 00's.

That's why these games have had the longevity they've had. Because fans can keep them fresh. Such a shame that these corporations would rather lock down the IP than give to the fans

>> No.6015097

>>6015075
I dont think they can really do that anymore, due to extensive outsourcing of code, and a lot of code being hereditary, and there's dozens of libraries involved, and the engine may be re-used in a later game (or even just its bits and pieces) and so on - this creates a massive tangle of coyright where it's unclear who owns what exactly, so its easier to just not deal with it.

Besides AAA corporations these days never do anything that isnt directly beneficial to them,and source code release is not.
The "fan-support" is a mythical concept to them that never enters the picture and they never cared about longevity of the game as a piece of art, because no matter what they claim, the game is not art to them. It's a product that looses its value as soon as the generated revenue drops below a certain point.

Or, you know, people have other things in life than playing video games. It's not very fun if you're forced to lose all your progress because other responsibilities kept you from finishing the entire map in one go. Typical zoomer argument. No, dear zoom zoom, if your schedule is really that busy, then you shouldn't be playing video games in the first place. Otherwise, you can play when you DON'T have anything else important to do. It's not like the levels are several hours long anyway, and if you do have to turn off and end up losing your progress, than boo hoo, you'll lose at very most half an hour. Is that really that much of a deal?

>It's not very fun if you're forced to lose all your progress because other responsibilities kept you from finishing the entire map in one go.
I wonder what these "responsibilities" are 99% of the time. Shitposting on social media? Watching your favorite Fortnite streamer? Masturbating to your gay furry brony porn?

Your short attention span prevent you from playing a single level from start to finish in one go, huh?

Beat Doom 1, now I'm onto Doom 2.

Dead Simple gave me a ton of trouble. Probably the first level I had to stop and think to myself exactly why I was dying, and how I could fix it. That's one thing I really enjoy about this game. When I fuck up and die, it really does feel like I'm the one who fucked up. Even in the run where I beat it, I still fucked up with the end part of it with shitty dodging and flubbed weapon switching.

Learn to circle strafe efficiently, and fight around corners a lot.

Learn which enemies have a low pain tolerance, and can be pain-locked with chainsaw. Pinkies and cacodemons are like this. You can kill them with no risk of a damage and at no ammo consumption, and they also provide cover as you're sawing them.

Also learn target priority: Hitscanners, Pain elementals and Archviles are some that you'll want to kill ASAP.

why do you try so hard to pretend you don't care

>> No.6017289 [DELETED]

The whole game feels like "piecemeal situations: the game". The monsters don't compliment each other, so you end up with 'the marine part' or 'the alien grunt part' or shallow scripted events like 'avoid this electrified floor while a bunch of headcrabs jump at you', instead of situations where you fight mixed groups of enemies that support each other and present interesting tactical challenges.

Level design is a massive downgrade from the FPS released before it. It takes place in Black Mesa, this massive facility, but since it's completely linear, it doesn't take any advantage of that like Hexen, Strife and System Shock did with their non-linear hub worlds. At the same time, Half-Life also lacks the variety FPS like Duke Nukem 3D and Blood had with their self-contained levels that are all unique and varied, nor does it have something like Unreal's epic journey across an alien planet. It's the worst of both worlds. 95% of Half-Life is spent in generic industrial corridors.

The whole 'immersive storytelling' thing was already done by shooters that came out before Half-Life, such as Unreal and System Shock. And those games did it way better. For example, Unreal handles storytelling much better than Half-Life since you're on alien planet and don't speak the language of the inhabitants, this justifies the silent protagonist conceit. Half-Life has no such excuse, and any time NPCs talk to you completely breaks any immersion

I believe you can revert all of those using the compatibility options. They do. Chasm: The Rift, Quake, and Quake 2 mods all look fine.

The reason 'vanilla' doom model replacements always look like ass is because the models are made by amateurs, textured by amateurs, animated by amateurs, and most crucially of all, they, they never bother to alter the monster scripts to add more frames to their walk cycles and the like.

Same with cacos and pain elementals. In Vanilla, you cannot pass underneath a floating monster no matter how high off the ground it is, meaning this room full of cacos is actually dangerous instead of you being able to casually walk back out without a care in the world.

Crispy Doom's honestly the best for me. Best costumization options, best optimization (prboom+ runs worse than a huge GZDoom map on my PC for some reason), and the comfiest, high resolution crispness.
One faggot says that "banilla = prboom+ and if you say otherwise you're boomer" but, truly, there's no actual issue in using any sourceport you like.
Crispy/Chocolate Doom just have that comfy vanilla feel, if it's what you're looking for.

1. memory. You can only store so many sprites, and a good death animation is a lot of sprites - often more sprites than the walk cycle. It wasn't remotely worth the resources.
2.production time. Redrawing every frame from multiple directions is really time consuming, and time is money.
3.A dead enemy just isn't important anymore. The player no longer needs to know which direction the enemy was facing when it died.

System Shock originally had 8 direction rotation for corpses, but the devs took it out when they realized that when you walk past a dead body and it suddenly "moves" (snaps to another rotation) it triggers a weird "wait, what just happened over there" reflex in your brain that yanks you out of immersion harder than if the corpse just looks the same from any angle. Also the problem was compounded in SS by the fact that you could look straight down at corpses in that engine, and if you do that while spinning it makes the corpse spin in completely the wrong axis and it looks like complete horseshit.

I just realised quake source ports have interpolated animations on by default. Turned if off.

I didn't know vanilla quake looked like that. It's horrid. How can you play with that janky shit? Did people hate it back in the day or what?

Coming off of Doom, I don't think people seeing each individual frame with no in-betweens would have bothered them too much at the time, since they'd be used to it.

With sprites, your brain actually kinda just glosses over it. It feels a bit different with models because they're truly three dimensional.

it might have been necessary to further reduce CPU load on weaker systems in software mode
vQuake and GLQuake came out pretty much immediately after, offloaded the rendering onto a dedicated GPU and you could interpolate all you want

Because it was the first fast, fully 3D action game. It was the best around.
Doom had its limitations/quirks as well, being the first fast 2.5D action game. I would consider infinitely-tall enemies much more annoying than low-FPS animations.

Holy cow, lads, the SLADE map editor is great. It's almost as easy to use as GZDB. Finally found something that works well on Linux. Eureka is good, but it feels very clunky, and the software rendering for the 3D view has limitations. Who else here /SLADE mapper/?

ZScript folks, what am I doing wrong? Here's a simple code running from EventHandler's WorldLoaded:

int lump = -1;
while (-1 != (lump = Wads.FindLump('NUKAGE3', lump + 1)))
Console.Printf("%d\n", lump);

It should print some number at least once, since it's a flat from Doom 2 IWAD, but it doesn't. Works for other lump names I tried though, like 'DEHACKED' or 'zscript'.

Working example, since I don't know if the suggestion I thought of would have worked:

int LumpNum = -1;
while ((LumpNum = Wads.FindLump ("UGBLKLST", LumpNum + 1, Wads.GlobalNamespace)) >= 0)

That's for CheckNumForName from what I see.
https://github.com/coelckers/gzdoom/blob/master/wadsrc/static/zscript/base.zs#L872

It likely works because NS_FLATS != 0. Using Wads.AnyNamespace would also work in your case. That's the right one to use.
