6017453 No.6017453 [Reply] [Original]

This game is gonna have its 20th anniversary soon (22 Nov 1999) so I wanna make an appreciation thread to one of my fav games ever.
While I know that this game has a lot of haters and I acknowledge the issues the game has, I still find myself enjoying this game from start to finish, collecting the large amount items while exploring the worlds is fun, there's some fun challenges for the Golden Bananas, the music is pretty nice (while it sounds like Banjo i think it has a more of an "atmospheric" tone, like Crystal Caves or Gloomy Galleon) and the graphics are great with some cool lighting effects.
Wouldn't call it as good as Banjo-Kazooie, but still definitely a great game if you like the genre.

Good taste. I rented it back when it first came out and had fun with it despite also 100%ing Banjo Kazooie prior. It's where I learned of the existence of the original Donkey Kong for arcade, too, which was a very awesome easter egg.

>> No.6017489

I've spouted a lot of hate about DK64 and will probably continue to do so, but with that said it's still like, OK. I've played worse platformers. The main reason I have such a problem with it is only because I expected better from Rare/Nintendo, not because it's bad compared to other 3rd-party platformers.

Man, I got a lot of great memories from that game. My cousin got it for Christmas ‘99 and we spent over a year 100%+ it (because we lived in different cities and I only saw him like once a month).

Creative bosses, nice music, fun minigames, and it was HUGE.

>> No.6017532

The gameplay, style, music, levels, bosses, challenges etc. None of it is bad, they're all quite fun. All of the elements of a good game are there

And this is an appreciation thread so I'll leave this there.

Agree but I think it improves on BK in nearly every aspect apart from slightly dragging at times. The atmosphere in some levels is incredible and there are many fun ideas. I wish they made more games like this.

I've always respected DK64 - I think its bad reputation is kind of skewed by the fact that the DKC series is so good. I don't play N64 games, but from what I recall, DK64 was one of the better games on that console, and one of the best N64 platformers.

BJK is a vastly different game imo, only BJT and DK64 are similar to one another, placing heavy empahsis on returning to previous levels with new and upgraded abilities. It's much more arcadey or old school in the way it feels, allowing you to play the entirety of a level in one go if you're good enough to pull it off.

My onion is that it's a bad game because of the "complete every level 5 times" thing - but Creepy Castle was the best level. Had interesting progression each way through, every time over the 5. If every level was like Castle in regards to its design being good, would have been an 11/10 game. Instead it's like...6/10 maybe.

They may as well have never played the game/watched the movie or whatever. Their talking points are 1:1 nothing but the "consensus", they never have an original thought, you'll never get one of them saying they really love it.
